I've only gone through the first couple of them, but having the music to play as an example of how it should sound, and then also just a piano track to play with is a huge help. I am very happy with these so far.

I started taking violin lessons as an adult in July 2010, and I am almost through the ABC series of 5 books. I am currently in this last book, and will probably finish it by June. I used to have a goal to get through the series within a year but by the time I started this last book, it no longer seemed important to get through it by a certain time. The pieces have become harder in this book (lots of position changes throughout) and I want to make them as good as I can, not just good enough so I can go on to the next lesson. Sometimes I revisit pieces from the earlier ABC books.Besides the ABC books, I also work in other books (usually alternating days), such as fiddling books, Wohlfahrt, Trott's Melodious Double Stops, Suzuki book 4, scale books, and any pop music that I want to play. I've also been playing in a community orchestra, and that helped me get better pretty fast. Mixing it up like that has helped keep me motivated, along with finding someone to play with. As I come up on one year of violin lessons and the end of the ABC books, I can highly recommend the ABC books to get one started on a lifetime of playing.

If Your looking for a book to teach someone to play this is it we used this item to teach our Grandson and Grand daughter.

This 5th book ends the series on a high note, playing violin classics and introducing necessary technique for the advanced player. Learning how to master these arpeggios, scales, and beautiful works will put you on the right track to becoming a great fiddler!

Not my first choice, but ok.

I love it.

If you enjoy reading the experiences of those that have traveled the South Pacific, this one is great! Mr. Vila gives a great account of his time spent in and around Micronesia. In my opinion, he did everything right. He was respectful and empathic towards the people and their customs. He didn't have any derogative remarks about the indigenous people and went out of his way to learn and accept their languages and cultures. Mr. Vila's book is right up there with one of my favorite authors, J. Maarten Troost. The only negative is that he only wrote one book on this subject! Time for another trip, Mr. Vila! I want to hear more from you, please!

Other than being able to point to it on a map, I knew almost nothing about Micronesia when I started this book, and I enjoyed learning about the culture there, as well as the specific challenges that came with doing police work in a foreign country. The police work added an additional interesting aspect that you don’t find in most travelogues. Some of Bryan’s stories are hilarious, some are suspenseful, and some are touching. I had a hard time putting this book down!Bryan has a great attitude and the conversational style of this book was a delight to read. It is also worth mentioning that Bryan is nothing but respectful for the local cultures he worked with. Everyone traveling, living, and working in foreign countries should aspire to “build bridges that go both ways”.I really hope that there might be another volume of stories someday...

I read this book when I was visiting Chuuk and Pohnpei and found it to be a perfect compliment to my visit. I was even able to meet one the book's characters Bill (and his family) when we stayed at the Truk Stop in Chuuk. My only critique of the book is that it might have been good to use pseudonyms for the characters because they are real people and you wouldn't want any harm to ever come to them.

As a former resident of Micronesia, I found Bryan's work a very accurate and entertaining chronicle of his experiences there. For me, it was like a trip back in time, renewing my own memories of those beautiful islands and the wonderful people that live there. I recommend Micronesian Blues to any reader that appreciates adventure mixed with humor in an exotic environment. Very, very good read.

Some 30 plus years later many of the characters are still around in Pohnpei. It was also interesting to read the perspective of someone so involved in early law enforcement, knowing what issues persist in the different states and countries. It was an easy enjoyable read, but might not be so interesting if you haven't spent time here.

What a well written book. You see the hardship these islanders but up with. The book makes you laugh and cry. Bryan hit so many points of the real problems of dealing with such multi cultural islands. Well done and very good reading for all. Been there saw it! Shame on the world for what has been done to the islands.

I read this book for a "post-conflict" college course and I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed reading it. It was a very easy and smooth read that kept me interested in the Bryan's learned lessons about developing a diverse country's police force. Even beyond the educational aspect of the book, I would suggest this book to anyone interested in an adventure book.

I enjoyed this book for its simple stories and well written narrative. Not a book that you can't put down but one full of great mini stories that are east to read. I loved hearing about the various culture shocks of working abroad.

Chapter 1What Is a Drug Mugger? And Why Should You Care?As a licensed pharmacist for 22 years, I have a confession to make: Some medications scare me! Don't get me wrong. As someone who has been dispensing prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) drugs for many years, I have a deep respect for what they can do. Pharmaceuticals can ease your pain, help you breathe better, keep you from having a seizure, and alleviate allergy symptoms that make your life miserable. The list of life- enhancing benefits goes on and on and on.But--and, oh boy, is this a big but--while fixing the one problem that you take the pharmaceutical to fix, that drug is likely robbing you of life- sustaining nutrients in the process. Many, in fact most, of the medicines you're taking have the potential to steal the life out of you slowly. How does that grab you? The ultimate effects of this nutrient depletion explain everything from nagging aches to life-threatening diseases.Millions of people are slipping through these drug-caused nutrient deficiency cracks as they get sicker and sicker each year. The system is so out of whack that people think it's normal to see eight or nine different physicians for an ailment that eludes diagnosis. And there's a good chance that the ailment can be traced back to a single nutritional deficiency! While drugs often do provide blessed symptom relief, in most cases they don't actually cure the disease. By virtue of the fact that they steal nutrients from your system or prevent their absorption, they could even be causing more diseases. As you will soon see, if you run low on even one vital nutrient, you can experience a veritable cascade of uncomfortable side effects. Then these will likely be diagnosed as a new disease, for which you will be handed yet another pricey prescription.Sad to say, you'll get on a medication merry-go-round, and it's a hard ride to get off of. That's why I wrote this book. I want to empower you to learn what is causing your problems and to help you feel better. Also, knowing what nutrients to replenish will help you to stay compliant with your medications, and this will please your physician, too.Let's talk about nutrients and their dosages, because you will soon find out while supplement shopping that dosages vary widely from brand to brand. You may be afraid to take more than the US Recommended Daily Allowance, which I sometimes suggest you do, so allow me to give you a primer on the RDA and dosages in general. The RDI Is Not the Be-All and End-AllIn my professional opinion, the reference daily intake (RDI) is just a starting place. It's not the be-all and end-all of good nutrition. The suggested amounts for each nutrient are definitely not enough to provide optimal health or offset the drug mugging effects of your medicines and lifestyle. To tell you the truth, I don't pay much attention to the RDIs on labels because I don't eat a lot of foods that come with labels. That's because I lean toward vegetarianism. (If you do, too, then please eat intelligently, because many vegetarians do not know how to eat properly. They quickly run out of important vitamins, amino acids, and minerals, among them vitamin B12, L-carnitine, and iron.)Fruits and veggies don't come with a food label stating the RDI. I assure you that these foods are highly nutritious even if they don't have a label to prove it. Not only are plant foods good for you, but they also do away with the compulsive need to read the RDI and make sure you're getting it.I am bent on keeping a nutritious kitchen, so you won't find many canned foods in my pantry. I keep a can of ravioli for my dad because he loves it and has stayed alive for 80-something years despite eating it. It would take you an hour to find this can. I realize that I'll be in serious trouble if another hurricane barrels through Florida, where I live, but canned, boxed, or highly processed foods are simply not part of my family's diet. This does not mean that you won't find chocolate-covered macadamias if you search hard enough. Okay, fine, there are some in the top drawer of my desk in case of an unlikely emergency, like if my computer freezes or umm, I umm . . . develop writer's block . . . or misspell a werd :-).I do not normally buy, eat, or store foods that have lengthy nutrition labels on them. We as humans are at the top of the food chain, so we have the most highly developed brains and impressive cognitive function. This enables us to make a choice to eat consciously, or not. If we all ate organic fruits and vegetables, we could get by with fewer drugs. There would be no stress about whether or not we met the RDI for a nutrient. We would be getting enough of each nutrient naturally. This whole rant isn't to nag you. I do it because I care. I've read thousands of readers' e-mails and letters over the years. I know that many people are concerned about improving their diets, losing weight, and avoiding a heart attack or diabetes. Many of my readers must take medications that are drug muggers, sometimes multiple drug muggers. Perhaps you are among this number. I can imagine how you feel, taking so much medicine and feeling worse and not knowing what else to do or who else to ask. This is like being stuck in the middle of a giant whirlpool and not being able to get out. As a pharmacist, I want to get as many people as possible on the right track of taking fewer prescribed drugs. My point is that if you're eating really well--and I know you can--then it won't matter much what the fine print on your food labels says. The same goes with your vitamin or dietary supplement. It may have the RDI listed on it, but if you are being mugged by a drug, you are going to need much more than the RDI suggests. Let me tell you a good story.A woman came to the pharmacy 1 month after I had suggested that she take additional vitamin B6 to help her with her carpal tunnel syndrome. She had been taking birth control pills, which I knew to be a drug mugger of vitamin B6. She told me she wasn't doing any better on the B6 she had picked up and showed me the bottle. It was a popular multivitamin that contained 2 mg of B6. I told her it was abysmally low for her needs, but she insisted that it met 100 percent of the DV and pointed out the ingredient label to prove it. We went round and round for a few minutes until I walked her over to the vitamin aisle and showed her a bottle of B6 that contained 50 milligrams and suggested she try that for another month. She happily returned a month later to tell me she was totally relieved of her pain.I'm one of the health-care professionals who happens to think that the RDI is just a minimum requirement that should keep you from developing a deficiency of a nutrient and perhaps dying of that deficiency. For example, the RDI for vitamin C will keep you from developing and dying of scurvy. The recommended amount of vitamin B1 will prevent you from dying of beriberi. The suggested amount of vitamin D will keep you from developing rickets, and the list goes on. This leaves me deflated and thinking, "That's it?" I'm meeting 100 percent of the DV and all this means is that I won't die from a deficiency? Sheesh! There is a huge gap between suffering from a deficiency and being healthy, isn't there? I choose health. That's why I want more than what the DV recommends. For more on Daily Values, see Chapter 26.Science Looks at PharmaceuticalsThe idea of helping people replenish lost nutrients didn't just suddenly dawn on me; Drug Muggers was years in the making. Many other scientists studied this topic before I did. As a pharmacist, I have made it my business to pay attention to every medication on the market and all the interactions that may occur with them. I also watch for news about medications and food or herb interactions. Because I specialize in medication and herbal interactions, I keep files on certain drugs and on all those black box warnings that the FDA comes out with every now and then. A black box warning is basically a warning to physicians stating the possibility of a particularly dangerous side effect. Keeping files and computer documents about such things is part of my professional life. I haven't included every single clinical research study or trial in this book because it would make it very long indeed. When it is most interesting, however, I have included certain citations in each chapter, but most of my references are in the back of this book so you can see them for yourself at your leisure. The fact is that drugs cause side effects, and many do so by stealing vital nutrients from our bodies. I'm proud to share all this information with you in the coming pages. My information doesn't come only from studies, however. It also comes from my heart. I want you to know that I used to work in nursing homes, where I saw firsthand the horror of living under the shadow of disease and the negative side effects of multiple medications. I so wanted to have a positive impact on people's lives, and I was saddened that many of the medications that came from my pharmacy did more harm than good. Before I teach you how to restore balance to your own life, I need you to master the basic definition of a drug mugger.Drug mugger: noun An over-the-counter or prescribed medication, food, herb, medical condition, or lifestyle choice that is capable of robbing your body's natural stores of an important vitamin, mineral, or hormone.Usage: Acid blockers are drug muggers of zinc. Smoking is a drug mugger of vitamin C.Drug mugging: adjective Of or relating to a drug mugger.Usage: My legs are cramping; I could be suffering from the drug mugging effects of my cholesterol medication. The Nutrient Depletion Effect of Drugs Is Well KnownThe drug mugging effect is real. It's not debatable or something that scientists are still trying to figure out. Even though there are hundreds of published articles and studies regarding nutrient depletion by drugs, millions of people continue to suffer. This is because the information has not been widely disseminated. Most physicians have not studied it, and many of them do not even know that depletion occurs. All those drug commercials on TV bother me. They paint miraculous pictures of medicine, but if you don't let yourself get distracted by the playful images, you might hear the litany of side effects of each new drug. The term side effect sounds like it's incidental to the main, desired effect. But I think a side effect, especially if it's a really serious one, is really another main effect that happens to be uncomfortable. Every drug has them. It's important to compare the risks to the benefits before beginning drug therapy or any treatment plan, for that matter.Drugs are advertised to fix one problem, but in reality (as opposed to what's on TV) they often manage to disrupt other aspects of cellular function. That's common knowledge in my circle of health-care practitioners. Unfortunately, it's not common knowledge to most people. So I need you to fully understand that the information in this book will help to reduce your risk of developing uncomfortable side effects from the medication you take.Side effects (drug mugging symptoms) may not show up right away. Some can occur months to years after taking a drug. For example, you can take a particular medicine for years and then suddenly have a heart attack. Was your heart diseased to begin with? Maybe. But it's also possible that it was weakened by a nutritional deficiency that went overlooked for too long, a nutrient deficiency caused by a drug you were taking to protect your heart. (I'm referring here to drugs that deplete your body of coenzyme Q10 [CoQ10], a nutrient that helps your heart do its job. You'll learn about this in detail further along in this chapter and in Chapter 8.) This kind of tragedy is completely avoidable as far as I'm concerned. All you have to do is take CoQ10 if you take a drug listed in that chapter. As you turn the pages, I'd love for you to say, "Aha! I just figured out why I feel so bad. Now I know exactly what to take to feel better!" For pennies a day, you can get your life back! As you read this book, you'll be able to recognize whether you are deficient in a particular nutrient; you can then start to put the right foods on your plate or take absurdly inexpensive vitamins to feel better. Okay, some of the supplements I recommend may cost a little more than you're used to paying for vitamins. But if you compare their cost to the bills for medical care that you won't have to pay down the line, they are, indeed, absurdly inexpensive. Let's take a brief look at some so-called diseases that may be related to the drug mugging effect.Depression, osteoporosis, and irregular heartbeat: These can all be caused by a deficiency of the mineral magnesium. Common drug muggers of magnesium include female hormones, diuretics, raloxifene (Evista), anti- inflammatories, and aspirin.Bald patches, loss of taste or smell, erectile dysfunction, and chronic diarrhea: All these conditions may result from zinc deficiency. Common drug muggers for zinc include anti-inflammatories, antibiotics, antacids, ulcer and heartburn medications, diuretics, and estrogen drugs used for birth control and menopause.Leg cramps, muscle spasms, memory loss, and fatigue: Any of these conditions may develop from a deficiency of CoQ10 (ubiquinone). This life- sustaining antioxidant gets demolished by hundreds of medications, including statin cholesterol drugs, metformin, antidepressants, beta- blockers, and diuretics.Cataracts, macular degeneration, liver problems, and high levels of the heart-attack-promoting substance homocysteine: Any of these conditions could be tied to low glutathione, a powerful antioxidant needed to get rid of poisons in your body. Acetaminophen is a possible drug mugger of glutathione. (Did you know that taking acetaminophen every day could contribute to vision loss later in life?)Weight gain, depression, fatigue, anemia, nerve pain, and a sensation of pins and needles: Any of these could be related to a deficiency of one or more B vitamins. Your stash gets depleted by female hormones (used for birth control and to relieve the symptoms of menopause), alcohol, antacids, ulcer medications, diuretics, raloxifene (Evista), cholestyramine, and diabetes drugs.

Let's face it, most doctors hand us prescriptions and send us on our way. They seem to be too busy to discuss the ramifications of taking the medication they are giving us. A simple hand out talking about side effects, food interactions, and which extra vitamins to take would be nice, but I've never received one, have you? (Suggesting probiotics when taking antibiotics would seem to be a good start!) Most people (?) are aware that statins deplete co-enzyme Q10 but are they aware that acid blockers deplete B12 and other B vitamins? (anyone tired?). This book goes into detail about all the nutrients, minerals, and vitamins that are depleted when taking prescription drugs. You will learn how to replace them, especially with foods. You will learn how to counteract side effects, again with natural methods and foods. You will learn how to increase your energy, have better digestion, and most important, in my opinion, you will learn which foods and drinks to avoid with which medications. After reading this very valuable book, get Jonny Bowden's book The Most Effective Natural Cures. The Most Effective Natural Cures on Earth You may be able to start with some of those instead of resorting to prescription drugs. Keep this reference book handy, so you can refer to it any time you get a prescription!

Life changing book for me! I first saw the name Suzy Cohen while I was waiting in line at Whole Foods and there was a magazine that she was featured in on Thyroid health. I purchased that magazine and couldn't put it down, I later purchased her book "Drug Muggers" and it truly has changed my life. I had a full Hysterectomy 3 years ago and my doctor at the time put me on huge amounts of Estrogen and along with Progesterone and Testosterone to balance my hormones and then after the shock of my body going through everything, my cortisol was high and my thyroid was sick. I gained 10lbs. overnight and was bloated and miserable, I was tired all the time, depressed and had no energy to do my morning runs. I hated the way I looked, I gained most of my weight in my thighs, butt and stomach. I complained to my doctor that I felt the Estrogen was to high because the only time I felt a little bit better and less bloated was the 2 weeks I was using my Progesterone that counter balanced the high Estrogen. I did my blood work again and it showed my Estrogen was low and my doctor said that my body was "craving Estrogen"! I continued listening to her and continued to be depressed and never felt right and I assumed this is what happens when you go into early Menopause and your fat and depressed so just get over it! I decided to go to someone else and they put me on a Estrogen patch that was 1/2 the potency of the Bio-Identical cream I was on and literally overnight I wasn't as bloated and I started to feel a little bit better, well at least my inner thighs weren't rubbing up against each other when I ran. I still wasn't quite right, not the way I use to be and I noticed if I ate broccoli at night I would wake up to be less bloated the next day. I didn't put all of it together until I read Suzy's magazine and book. I have always taken supplements but not the ones my body was being depleted from the HRT. I started taking individual B vitamins along with a B-complex and my mood lifted dramatically and I had energy again that I haven't felt in over 3 years, I also started taking Calcium D-Glucarate to flush out the excess Estrogen I am back to my original weight. I can't thank you enough Suzy for writing this book and opening my eyes, I truly am thankful!

I am so grateful to have this book. It has helpful information as to what nutrients may need supplementation when we take certain drugs. Natural ways to restore what is missing are also mentioned. I especially appreciate the information as to what forms of a vitamin or mineral are most easily assimilated, as well as what not-so-useful forms are being used by some makers because they are cheaper. There is a very helpful list of Resources, Great supplements: Companies that put their best foot forward" on p. 327 of the paperback version (the one I bought); also a chapter on daily values, with explanations of some abbreviations and "Are megadoses the answer?" (No.) and "Why I pay no attention to the numbers."People anxious to avoid unnecessary or harmful added ingredients will be happy to read, toward the end of the book, about "flavoring, binders, humectants, lubricants, disintegrators, and preservatives." And did you know this? (p. 313 of paperback): "Supplement makers...often list an ingredient even if it appears in a negligible amount or if it's extracted from the wrong portion of a plant. For example, unworthy supplements may state 'gingko extract,' whereas a high-quality supplement is proud to disclose the dosage as '40 mg gingko extract (leaf) standardized to 24 percent heterosides." (OK, I admit that I don't know anything about heterosides, but you get the idea.)Here are just a few of the many, many things I didn't know until I read this book:(1) If you are supplementing zinc and copper, neurotransmitters in the brain that affect mood, they need to be taken in the proper ratio. "The ratio of copper to zinc is far more clinically valuable than the concentration of either one." Too much of one, and you end up with a relative deficiency of the other. Sometimes a deficiency of zinc arises due to the use of birth control pills that cause excessive copper, and then the resulting mood changes (for the worse) may end up being treated with psychoactive drugs, whereas the problem is actually being caused by an imbalance.(2) Re vitamin E: the lab-created form, dl-alphatocopherol, is cheaper to produce, but d- (not dl-) alphatocopherol is more biologically active. I had already read that somewhere else, but not this: Vitamin E is the name for a family of 8 molecules, so "the very best brands have all eight in their formulas." The author remarks that vitamins coming in the wrong form are a deal-breaker for her, and would be for me, too. And now, thanks to this book, I know which ones ARE deal-breakers.(3) CoQ10 suspended in rice bran oil or olive oil, rather than a dry powder in a capsule gets into the body's cells more easily and may be more bio-available. The better absorbed form of CoQ10 (i.e., ubiquinol) is sold under the brand name Kaneka QH.(4) The author considers it better to take beta-carotene vitamin A, unless otherwise prescribed by your doctor. Buy natural forms because synthetic ones do not offer antioxidant protection, and the author and some other experts actually consider synthetic versions of beta-carotene to be "downright dangerous."The list of things this book has taught me goes on and on. But speaking of lists, here are the titles of a few lists and charts in the book:"Grapefruit interaction chart""Common drug muggers" (This chart is great, with headings such as "Types" (of drugs) / "Common Drugs" / "Install your security system" [what to take to counteract the depletion of nutrients in each case], and "...or these complications may result.")"Supplements to battle the drug muggers" (what supplement has what important nutrients, and what "drug muggers" it will fight)"Drug muggers of biotin (Vitamin B7)""Drug muggers of calcium""Drug muggers of CoQ10""Drug muggers of glutathione" ("The liver uses glutathione to metabolize all the medications you take and remove them from the body once their purpose has been served." Without it, your couldn't clear drugs and toxins from your blood.)"Drug muggers of magnesium"And many more...I should let it be known here that I have no connection with the author or publisher of this book or any other reason to praise it, other than the fact that I have found it so impressive and useful.

This is the book I wish I'd had when I started feeding my son solids! I was curious about baby-led weaning, but still also wanted to feed him purees (especially at daycare). This book offers a nice, flexible approach that let's you do both--and tells you the best way to make finger foods safe for Baby. The recipes are healthy, easy-to-prepare and my son has liked the ones I have made so far. I'd recommend buying this and the author's other baby food book, if you want a really comprehensive recipe repertoire.

It's an ok book. Not too clear of size of foods and when appropriate to feed. Not enough pictures if it's supposed to be more of a cookbook. The recipes look great but they don't address food allergies which are very common in babies being exposed to foods for the first time. Doesn't provide ideas on substitutions for many allergens.

This is a fantastic book! I was always timid about what foods to start and when. This book gives just enough background behind why so that I feel informed and gives delicious options for what to feed them. I started with made-up purees with my first, now I have options that will help the next one to become a more healthful, adventurous eater. I like how it transitions through to family food that everyone can enjoy! Soon we will all be eating together.

The guidance and recipes in this book are awesome. It doesn't waste time telling you the same thing over and over. They offer a slightly more laid back version of BLW, great for first time mom's who are navigating first foods for the first time, but don't want to stress about the strictness that a lot of BLW books and groups stick to. It explains how to safely cook foods for your little one, and gives you creative yet simple ideas to try. I highly recommend!

I ordered a couple different books on baby led weaning and by far Baby-Led Feeding: A Natural Way to Raise Happy, Independent Eaters is the best one of the lot. Its beautiful photos, easy to follow recipes and age-appropriate meal guidance have made baby-led feeding a joyful experience in our house. At 10-months-old my daughter loves fruits and vegetables and is becoming very proficient in feeding herself. Her favorite meal is shredded chicken breast with fresh cubed tomatoes, but she also loves leafy green puree cut with a little bit of applesauce. And the family meal planning section helps my husband and I eat food that we really enjoy with our daughter. We especially like the one pan gnocchi with mushrooms. Do delicious! It makes me really happy to see my daughter develop a wide palette for healthy food.

This is a fun read and very informative, especially for first-time parents who are wondering "can baby eat this?" The first half of the book talks about what and when to feed baby, and the last half is a collection of easy recipes (breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks!) that the entire family will enjoy. It's exactly the reference I was looking for, and hopefully will help us avoid making separate meals for baby in the future!

We had been struggling to get our son (8 mos) interested in puree of any sort since he hit 6 mos, though he showed interest in our dinner plates! I was worried about how to introduce "real" food and the risk of choking etc. The careful instructions / descriptions of what to expect made a huge difference in making me feel safe and confident in giving our son "real" food. As soon as we put the roasted zucchini on his high chair tray he grabbed it and started munching away! The recipes are simple but had suggestions that I wouldn't have thought of (like how to make an avocado more "grip-able" for little hands).

I was feeling overwhelmed to start my 6 month old on solids and curious about baby led feeding/weaning. Because our baby is at daycare I knew he would likely need a mix of purees and solids and this book does a great job helping you get started no matter how you want to feed your baby without making it seem like you're doing anything wrong. She breaks down the science, provides delicious recipes, offers great tips and gives you a handy feeding chart/schedule. Definitely worth the money and I can't wait to dive into the recipes with baby!

Uplift - A Pilot's Journey

About the Author

Grant Corriveau has been an aviator, one way and another, for a long time. As a kid he built plastic aircraft models and by the power of imagination soared into the skies. Later in life he learned to fly real rag-wing Fleet Canucks, then moved on step-by-step towards ever larger and faster aircraft. Along the way, as a flight instructor, he helped uplift others to see for themselves the joys and challenges of flying. For a summer, he seeded thunderstorms along the foothills of Alberta. Then, he became an airline pilot and spent the next thirty years transporting people across North America and the Caribbean. Just before retiring, he built and flew his own kit airplane and was thrilled how, during the first test flight, the wings stayed on. Over the years, he has learned to be thankful for the many people who helped him -- uplifted him -- along the way; family, friends, colleagues and strangers. He currently lives on Vancouver Island with his wife and greatest friend, France. He recently obtained his glider pilot license and enjoys sharing his stories through his writing.

Growing up around an Air Force base (my father was a civilian employee) airplanes were part of my life from the very beginning. I am still an airplane fan to this day and am always willing to spend time at any active airport which has a viewing area. I am also a flight simmer (Microsoft FSX) and have been for nearly two decades. (I am also writing this review as I listen via an aviation website to HF Oceanic traffic!)So when I saw Grant Corriveau's book of his experiences as an airline pilot in Canada on NetGalley, I requested a copy to read and was graciously granted that request by the publisher, CWR Press. Thank you CWR Press!Uplift: A Pilot's Journey is a wonderful memoir about one man's love of aviation and his career as a pilot in now legendary aircraft which I had the privilege of flying when they were in active service - the DC-9 and the Boeing 727 (which was the first passenger jet I first flew in over 40 years ago)Uplift is a simple but wonderful telling of the personalities and planes of one pilot's career. It is not melodramatic narrative but it does include some stressful moments when the control of an aircraft requires a sixth sense, based on experience and an intuitive feel, is needed. It is not a 'kiss and tell' book but it does include Corriveau's assessment of passengers and cockpit crew who challenged his sanity and patience at times. If you are looking for more drama in the skies, this is not the book for you. But if you, or someone you know, loves aviation, Uplift is a great book which gives a detailed but varied view of life in the cockpit of a commercial airline pilot, who loved his job.I really enjoyed this book as it was a simply wonderful book to read abut a pilot who enjoyed flying and yet looked beyond his job and gave thought to a view that life has a spiritual dimension that we need to consider.I gave this book a four-star review on Goodreads.Note: I received an electronic ARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for a review. I was not required to write a positive review.

In Uplift, Grant Corriveau describes his journey from his beginnings on smaller planes to ultimately achieving his goal in becoming a commercial airline captain. Though there isn’t the polish to this book as to memoirs taken on by bigger publishers, Corriveau has played to his writing strengths in making each chapter a snippet of either his experiences in the sky and, occasionally in life. Each chapter is short but enlightening with a glimpse into commercial aviation in its training or regulations, pilot experiences and all the in between. Throughout, Corriveau keeps an upbeat attitude and the effect is indeed “uplifting” in its approachable dialogue to the reader with small life lessons as well as entertaining stories like that of a captain Corriveau worked being mid air when he realized he had left his car parked at the drop off gate with the keys still in it. I also highly recommend the rules of flying at the end which had me laughing out loud as I read them. Each industry has its own jargon and culture and pilots have often been shrouded in a sort of mystery. Corriveau demystifies some of the job and the industry that goes with it while still inspiring a heavy respect for those who navigate our airways. An enjoyable light read.My thanks to the publisher, CWR Press for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I have a bit more than a passing interest in flight. I once considered getting a license, but never got around to it. Instead, I enjoy my app that tracks the planes I see coming and going from our local airport. When I fly, I sit in the window seat so I can watch the flaps and ailerons. I listen to the pilot channel when it's available. So when I picked up Grant Corriveau's book I was enthralled from the first page. A fascinating narrative of the adventures of a developing airline pilot -- easy reading with plenty of energy, humor and enough technical stuff to be exciting. Corriveau also sprinkles life lessons throughout -- so you feel uplifted without having been preached at.

A very fun, entertaining book about the life of an airline pilot. A GREAT summer read!!! Learning about what actually goes on the flight deck of an aircraft is both enlightening, humorous, and interesting. Each chapter is self contained, so it can be easily read in short snippets. A big plus if you are traveling or out and about this summer and want a book to read.

If you ever wondered about the aviation industry, if you yearn for the pre 9-11 days when passengers used to be able to visit the flight deck... if you want to be inspired and "uplifted" about the miracle of flight, this is a superb book... good for those summer days.... and good for reading while on a plane as well. Anything but dry -- warm, engaging and sometimes LOL funny. Highly recommend this book.

A most interesting read about what really goes on in the cockpit. The pressures of landing during intense weather is especially compelling. I sense that men will likely find this interesting, although the author speaks most favorably about the female pilots and first officers he flew with. A great summers read.

I loved Captain Grant's "breezy" writing style, filled with insider airline info and humorous stories about his "in-flight" experiences -- from flight training on up through the ranks to being a captain. "Uplift" is a fun read with a great message for all -- never give up on your dreams.

An inside look into a pilot's life.

Perhaps I went into this book with faulty expectations... I was expecting something that may delve deep into neurobiology and related phenomenon or something that would really illuminate a possible way to leverage the elusive flow state. However, most of the book was filled with banal exposition of the lives of action/adventure athletes. I found it a little interesting, but for the most part, I just couldn't find myself caring. One anecdote could have provided enough of a context to work with, but more than half of the book is filled with vapid tales that appear intended to motivate or some kind of tributary. The book seems filled with lots of talk of flow state with the very occasional timid suggestion of reproducing the state. Weak read.

This is NOT a book about the comic book hero. It’s a book about a mental state called “the flow” and how adventure and extreme athletes have used it to make tremendous strides in their sports. The characteristics of the flow include extreme focus, time dilation / time distortion, a vanishing sense of self, extremely high performance, fearlessness, and a falling away of everything non-essential to the task at hand.Kotler is by no means the first author to write about the flow. The term was inaugurated by a book entitled “Flow” first published in 1990 by a University of Chicago Psychology professor named Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. Csikszentmihalyi coined the term in the process of conducting a study on happiness. He found that happy people tended to engage in activities in which they could immerse themselves and find the zone. Contrary to the early part of Kotler’s book--in which it sounds like adventure athletes cornered the market on flow--Csikszentmihalyi says that said activity could be work or hobby and that the flow is to be found in poetry writing, yoga, martial arts, copy writing, or potentially any activity in which the skill level and challenge are both high.(To be fair, Kotler does get around to recognizing that extreme athletes neither invented nor exclusively exploit the flow. However, his—well-taken—point is that such athletes are unusually good a finding, and dropping deep into, the flow in part because risk-taking behavior is an important trigger. And for free climbers [rock climbers without ropes], mega-ramp skateboarders, and bodysuit skydivers sometimes there are only two possible states of existence—the flow and being scraped off a rock.) It should be noted that some of the elements of flow sound a lot like the states that have been described by various mystical religious traditions for centuries, e.g. the dissolution of a feeling of separation between self and the rest of the universe. Warning: religious readers may find it disconcerting to read that there are scientific explanations for states that were once attributed to communion with god or the like. While I’ve given Kotler’s book high rating, I haven’t yet given one reason to read it—and I do recommend people read it. First, while Csikszentmihalyi is the “father” of flow research, his methods were decidedly low tech--i.e. surveys and interviews—but Kotler reports on more recent studies involving neuroanatomy, neuroelectricity, and neurochemistry. Second, while Kotler delves into the science of the flow, he does so in a manner that is approachable to non-scientists. Finally, all of the narrative accounts of extreme athletes interspersed with the more technical commentary make for a very readable book, even if one is not particularly knowledgeable of—or interested in—such sports. I gave this book a high rating both for its food-for-thought value, and because of its high readability.I will admit that I was not so enamored of the book when I first began it, and other readers may find the same irritation. For one thing, Kotler’s adoration of extreme athletes comes off sounding like diminishment of mainstream athletes and others involved in “flowy” activities. A prime example of this is seen in Chapter 1. Kotler gives us an endearing description of how gymnast Kerri Strug won the gold in the 1996 Olympics by sticking a landing on a shattered ankle. However, he then comes off a bit douchey when he suggests that Strug’s achievement pales in comparison to Danny Way’s skateboard jumps at the Great Wall of China. For another thing, in his zealousness to prove that extreme sports practitioners are full-awesome while mainstream athletes are “meh,” Kotler makes some comparisons that seem apples and oranges to a neophyte such as me. If they are fair comparisons, he certainly doesn’t explain why they should be considered so. The best example of this is when he states that Olympic divers took decades to achieve increases in rotation that extreme skiers and skateboarders surpassed in much less time. This seems unreasonable for two reasons. First, divers have a very standard distance in which to achieve their acrobatics. In other words, they don’t get to build a “mega-platform” that’s 50% taller like Danny Way creates “mega-ramps” that were bigger than ever before. Of course, if you can increase the distance between yourself and the ground you can increase your spins, rotations, or whatever much more quickly (yes, your danger goes up vastly, I’m not diminishing that.) Second, the divers gained zero advantage from technological improvements, but the same cannot be said for skiers and skateboarders. In other words, if you go from skis made of oak to ones made of carbon nanotubes (that are 50 times stronger and 1/100th of the weight) of course you’re going to make gains faster.Perhaps, I’m overstating Kotler’s disdain for mainstream athletics, but that’s what happens when one uses a national hero as a set up to show how much more awesome a relatively unknown skateboarder is (among skateboarders Way is extremely well-known but he’s not a household name as the Olympian was--at least for a short time in the late 90’s.) I suspect that Kotler was just trying to convince a general audience that the athletes he’s speaking about aren’t pot-smoking knuckleheads who are as likely to be seen on America’s Funniest Home Videos crushing their nads on a handrail as setting a new world record. These men and women are serious people engaged in serious activities, and they give it their all. They do deserve more respect for that than they are probably given by broad sectors of the populace. Perhaps, the importance of what these folks are achieving does need to be conveyed because the demographic that reads books and the one that follows extreme sports probably has wide wings of non-overlapping area. (I’m not saying skateboarders are illiterate or bookworms don’t skate--just that the Venn diagram has substantial areas of mutual exclusivity.)As I indicated above, in each chapter we get both some insight into the nature of the flow and its triggers and stories of adventure / extreme athletes that serve as examples of what’s being discussed. In chapter 2 we learn what the flow looks like in terms of brain waves (i.e. high theta/low alpha, or between meditation and a relaxed / resting state of wakefulness.) In chapter 3, we learn about the neuroanatomy of the flow in terms of what areas of the brain it lights up, and that it’s at least as important what areas shut down. In chapter 4, we learn about the neurochemistry of the flow and that a cocktail of dopamine, norepinephrine, endorphins, anandamide, and serotonin makes up the chemistry of flow, but, critically, not so much with the adrenaline. The subsequent chapters deal with triggers of the flow, and what conditions best set up achievement of this state of mind.Chapter 9 stands out as an important, but quite different, portion of the book. It deals with the downside (or dark side) of the flow. This has a lot to do with the fact that the aforementioned internal substances (and the flow state in general) are quite addictive. While it’s unfair to say, and unlikely, that the extreme athletes Kotler writes about (i.e. the ones at the top of their games) are drug addicts as some might assume of skate boarders, snow boarders, and the like, it may not be unreasonable to say that they have a kind of monkey on their backs—albeit a perfectly legal one.As I’ve said, I recommend this book for anyone who is interested in this state of mind. One needn’t be interested in extreme sports to get a lot out of the book.

This book is crammed end to end with people jumping off buildings, skiing down cliffs, skateboarding, skydiving, surfing giant waves, etc. The core message is powerful but gets drowned in the author's over-the-top sports examples slathered far too liberally. It's almost like he doesn't have enough to say so he has to couch it in endless sports drama. It gets tiresome. So I'm going to do the same in this review. While repeating over and over how tedious his sports analogies are, I have to say that if you are patient, there are some real gems in this book worth picking up, and my recent meditations, study, sports and other activities have strongly benefitted from the reading. I'm not sure this will be the case for most, but it is a useful book if you are curious about how to engender flow in your life and you understand that flow happens in other places than just sports. The author does not do much to help you understand that. Just trust me on it.

Basically the book is a series of stories about extreme sport athletes with little to offer in the way of relating any practical application outside of dopamine fueled athletics. I was waiting until the final page for some kind of tie-in with the world outside of extreme sports and some practical training steps in the personal or corporate world, but these are never explored in any concrete way by the author. He just keeps boomeranging from one X Games feat to another, finally ending with a 800 mph skydive from outer space. Flow is an interesting state that all of us have experienced at one time or another. It is too bad that the author does little to explore the real world applications and steps the non-X Gamer can apply in real life.

No practical recommendations in this book other than Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's decades-old description of precursors or sidelines to the flow state.Somehow the Shaolin monks are never mentioned. A non-extreme-sport lifestyle dedicated to surpassing "normal" and engendering on-demand flow capability. The book did not transport me into a flow state.

I took the GRE twice. The first time I only used the "Cracking the GRE" companion book. The second time I took it I spent a few hours per week in the month leading up to the test reviewing with this book (1,007 GRE Practice Questions) and the "Cracking the GRE" book. I felt much more confident going in the second time (both because of my practice and taking it twice helps with the nerves). If you put the time into your studying and study for GOOD habits (as opposed to mindlessly answering questions), this book seems to be a good guide. My scores did go up quite a bit the second time, making making this book and taking the test very much worth the investment. My only complaint-- they need to include more tips for the "hidden plug in" section, but this was only one small part of the entire, very large, book.

As advertised, there are a lot of questions in this book. The sheer quantity is the best quality by far. You will honestly have a hard time finding explanations that are less clear than they are in this book; diagrams are almost never included in the explanations for geometry questions, and it is not uncommon for explanations for complex problems to be only a sentence or two long.

It does have a lot of practice question. But the answer key is not so clear, for both of the math and verbal section. The math key sometimes has error.

Good study guide

The item was exactly what I wanted. I would order from this seller again.

A lot of content; the correct answer is explained (although in some cases the correct answer may not make full sense).

I have been using it with my students. Good selection of exercises, overall a good book.

I like it but you have to practice it rigorously
