The book takes on the important task of informing the reader of the most likely origin of humankind, and tells the history of the African continent in the last 10,000 years or so. It dispels many Eurocentric misconceptions and untruths. It is high time the truth comes out and the European colonizers' version is proven so tainted that it is simply untrue. I give highest rating for this reason and encourage anyone who would like to know the truth about the last 10,000 years of history to read this book. My only criticism would be that although the book does mention African matriarchy and gender equality, it mostly lists the many males in the history. But perhaps it is because the book doesn't go even further back. For history earlier than 10,000 years, I recommend Riane Eisler's The Chalice and The Blade.

I consider “introduction to African Civilizations”, one of the best books ever written. Considering the book was first published in 1937 there are, obviously, some things that may have changed but overall if is a five plus. There should be a copy of this book in every African/ African American home and any other’s who wish to be enlightened.

Someone edited out the part about ancient Zimbabwe from the original. That told of their iron and gold mine used by the ancient Ethiopians and other very early civilizations. The rest of the book is excellent.

Great for History Discussion Groups. Should be in all School Libraries, especiall in all Southern States in this countryPerhaps African Americans would begin to reject the notion that the Black Race is inferior and a minority race.Their is so much scientific and scholarly proof that Africans are the worlds first people. This book also dispels the myth that European, Greek History is correct. African History is not Revisionist History, rather European History is Revionist History.

Must read for the children!

Interesting history to learn about

I was looking for a book that would peice together the different aspects of Afrikan history that I had gathered in my research. This book did the job. With referals to other texts and a great general view of Afrikan history, this book was the one I needed.I jumped into African history by reading everything I could. I wish I would have read this as my first book.... hence the name Introduction.A must read for anyone who is looking into Afrikan history, especially an Afrikan.

This book is a Bible of black history. It contains the truth about the origin of civilization in Afrika, as it has been told through the years, in recorded history, from various historians. I literally use it on a weekly, if not daily basis, to combat ignorance about the Afrikan/Khemi origins of everything, including various nations around the world. It, also, talks about how Afrikan people discovered America and how Afrikan people "civilized" Europe. It's simply a must have book!!!!!!!! I love it.

This book is nothing short of excellent. It is in the top three of my favorite little treasures that I have ever gotten my hands on. Page by page, positive affirmations are composed that manifest healing, health, prosperity, happiness, positivity and so forth. Every single time I open this book when I need a little inspiration, I always feel happy and full of light. This book was made to be so warm, and you can feel the love poured into this book. It’s small enough to take along with you throughout your travels, and makes one feel hopeful and joyful in times of despair. It is definitely worth purchasing and I appreciate it so much. I’m currently teaching the “healing” page to a child with autism, we are learning about the concepts presented within the book together, and SHE appreciates this book as well. Allowing these affirmations to just wash over you and bring you to a positive thinking process thats aligned with your true spirit is how I make the most out of my new found treasure.

She has been around forever and I discovered her five years ago after I had cancer. A therapist recommended I get some of her books and cds to help me through everything. They are a breath of fresh air. The way she puts things really helps you deal with things and see them from a much more positive viewpoint. I currently have about four of her books and 4 cds in my car. I have also given it out as gifts to friends getting divorced or going through a rough time in life. She will change your life and speak to your soul.

I very much enjoyed this book. I liked the format of the book. Ms Hay provides a one sentence meditation on a page, with a one or two paragraph explanation or instruction on the next page. Her spiritual viewpoint, that has no religious bias, is all-inclusive, refreshing, inspiring and insightful.Although there were a few meditations that I did not agree with, overall I received much benefit from these thoughts and positive perspectives. Everyone would benefit from this book whether or not their life needs healing.

We know the power of our thoughts. We gratefully know that our power is great in the Universe's Design. All we need to do is to FOCUS in Meditation...And these familiar beliefs, reaffirmed, provide thewords for concentration on that understanding. After all these years, thank you again, Louise Hay.Be well. In Love Always Shellie in Sunrise

This book contains short affirmations and may disappoint someone who was expecting more in the way of content. However, if you are looking for quick affirmations and don't have the time or desire for more extensive reading, then the book should be satisfying to you.

I thought this book would actually contain some guided meditations to help heal your life. What you get is daily affirmations written from the perspective of the author.I will use it for positive affirmations for my yoga classes, as they are easily relatable and have a good message. But as far as personal use- I’ve found a couple pages that I’ll use to engage people on Social Media (hence 3 stars instead of 2)Not what I expected. But I’ll make the most out of it.

Louise Hay is committed to helping humanity reach their dreams of good health, good financial backing, and all the other good in life that we can think of. She found that positive affirmations changed the brain and it's pathways which in turn, changed our lives for the better. I heartily recommend her "Meditations To Heal Your Life"!

I have a small used copy off Amazon and I love the teachings of this book. My day doesn't feel jumpstarted until I've read the day's affirmations and have taken a few minutes to soak it in. I'll randomly flip to a page and it's exactly what I needed to hear for that day. I highly recommend this book if you love Louise Hay's books!

City of the Beasts, by Isabel Allende

From Publishers Weekly

Adventure seekers will find plenty of thrills in Allende's first novel for young readers. When 15-year-old Alexander Cold is sent to stay with his eccentric, gruff grandmother, Kate, while his mother is being treated for cancer, he is more than a little reluctant to accompany Kate on a writing assignment in South America to search for a legendary nine-foot-tall "Beast." However, once the expedition down the Amazon begins, Alexander's doubts are pushed out of his mind by more immediate concerns, such as keeping an eye on two suspicious members of the party: a native named Karakawe and Mauro Cari as, a wealthy entrepreneur. After Alexander's mysterious encounter with a caged jaguar, another teen, Nadia, explains its importance to him, and begins calling Alexander "Jaguar." This marks the beginning of their somewhat surreal journey: the two teens are kidnapped by the "People of the Mist," a tribe possessing the power of turning invisible, and enter a mountain to discover the mythical city of El Dorado and the enigmatic "Beasts." Reluctant readers may be intimidated by the thickness of this volume, but the plot moves at a rapid pace, laced with surprises and ironic twists. The action and outcome seem preordained, cleverly crafted to deliver the moral, but many readers will find the author's formula successful with its environmentalist theme, a pinch of the grotesque and a larger dose of magic. Grade 6-10-Combine a magical world, mystical shamanic adventure, and feisty and eccentric characters with a fast-paced eco-thriller and you have Allende's first book for young adults. Set in the lush and treacherous Amazonian rain forest, this is the story of 15-year-old Alexander Cold and 12-year-old Nadia Santos. While his mother is in Texas for chemotherapy treatment, Alex is spending the summer with his emotionally distant grandmother, who has been hired to find and write an article on the "Beast" that has been terrorizing the jungle. Partially funded by a suspicious businessman, the party includes a self-centered professor, several photographers, a government doctor and soldiers, a few native Indians, and a guide, C‚sar Santos, who brings along his daughter. Alex and Nadia become good friends, and together discover their own inner strengths through visions and shamanic journeys with the local tribe. The plot is as thick as its jungle setting. There are dangers such as the terrifying humanoid Beast that kills with huge claws, anacondas, natives with poison dart arrows, and an untrustworthy member of the expedition. The story is a struggle between good and evil, filled with surprises and adventure. Put this title on your "If You Liked Harry Potter" lists, and Allende may just find new fans. Though this is a rather hefty book, it is a real page-turner with hope for more, as Allende leaves readers with, "Until we meet again-."-Angela J. Allende is definitely my favorite author. I actually purchased "City of Beasts" by accident. While browsing through the Amazon Kindle book store on my android I saw "City of Beasts" and accidently hit the "buy" tab. I figured that if I accidently purchased an Allende book, it couldn't be a bad thing. I decided to begin reading the book and found that I could not put it down. This is usually the case with the Allende books I read. Her story and descriptions of the Amazon jungle and the people on the journey to this jungle were captivating. I don't want to give much away, but her story is beautifully written with meaningful purpose, a potent story line, and colorful characters.

Captivating read which is educational for its investigation into indigenouslifestyles as compared to the 'modern' societies which support avarice anddestruction of forests and rivers. The focus on developing spiritual strengthsis admirable in a world where such is often denied.

This is the first of Isabel Allende's trilogy... for young people and adults. written in her great literary style it is full of vivid images, great travel information, and delightful characters ranging from an elderly anthropologist to her young teen grandson and young female from the Amazon.I suppose somewhere in here might be the heavy religious tones of Narnia or Philip Pullman (if so I missed them). Beasts and its sequels are simply delightful imaginative tales... a bit like Hudson's,Green Mansions, seldom read today. this is nature fantasy, not technology stuff. This would be a good family read choice: suitable for good readers of about a 6th grade reading level or a good parent read aloud book for poorer readers or a "you read a chapter, I read a chapter" bed time reading. It is a great introduction to a good writer with outstanding adults books. Once I read one I needed all three and bought all three for adults sons for Christmas. Great price at amazon buying all three together in paperback.

Allende never disappoints in transporting the reader into the worlds she creates. At each turn of the page, I was with Kate, Nadia, and Alexander. I could smell the beast and see the every step of their journey; I watched the People of the Mist fade away!

I love this author and this work is special since it is the first of a trilogy for young readers. Two young people find themselves captives of an indigenous tribe near the Amazon River, and become the tribe's bridge to dealing with encroaching business concerns. Their presence in the area is with an expedition seeking a creature similar to the yeti.

Hard to believe this was my first Allende book. I can see what all the hype is about. Her prose style is enchanting, just like the tales she spun in this Fantasy thriller

Honestly, I don't know where I was when this trilogy was published! It's one of the best books I've read! I couldn't put it down. I read it as soon as I woke up & when I went to sleep. Isabelle Allende is a really good author. I look forward to reading the rest of her books. 💙💙💙

this is one of the best books ive read and had the pleasure of sharing with my 10 yr old daughter, she loves how the book makes her imagine what the author is narrating

From the Inside Flap

“An engaging travel adventure that blends art, science, and natural history. A Sea of Glass documents Drew Harvell’s quest to document the conservation status of some of the ocean’s most charismatic marine invertebrates, from sea slugs to octopuses. Inspired by her discovery of a lost collection of handblown glass animals, Harvell dives the world’s oceans to determine how their living counterparts are faring in today’s beleaguered marine ecosystems. Beautifully illustrated, A Sea of Glass is both a call to action and a loving ode to our oceans.”—Ted Danson, actor, activist, and founding member of Oceana   "This book is significant not just for its scholarship on a fragile ecosystem but also for its celebration of the symbiotic relationship between art and science.”—Dale Chihuly, American glass sculptor and founder of the Pilchuck Glass School   “A Sea of Glass weaves two amazing substances, water and glass, into a living tapestry of history, with mesmerizing stories that combine science, art, and the lives of people who, like the author, were fascinated with the menagerie of small, rarely seen sea creatures that shape the nature of the ocean and, therefore, of life on Earth. Many of these animals have sharply declined in recent decades, but knowing of their existence may inspire caring and protection for them and the living sea they—and we—need to survive.”—Sylvia Earle, National Geographic Society Explorer-in-Residence, former chief scientist for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and founder of Mission Blue   “Drew Harvell’s new book spans the fertile yet rarely visited boundary between science and art. Part history, part exploration, and part cautionary tale, A Sea of Glass transforms the fascinating story of the Blaschkas’ glass sea creatures into an elegant metaphor for the fate of our oceans. The result is a visual feast and a splendid read.”—Thor Hanson, author of Feathers and The Triumph of Seeds  “A Sea of Glass is a superb story inspired by the unparalleled artistic creations of two talented Bohemian glassmakers who provided a time capsule of marine life 150 years ago that now serves as a baseline for the author, a marine biologist, to reflect on the fragility and resiliency of life in the ocean. A delightful merger of art, science, and travel adventure that entertains, enlightens, and inspires.” —Jane Lubchenco, U.S. Science Envoy for the Ocean and first woman to be appointed administrator for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

I love this book, which is both informative and fun to read.

Revelation!

Drew Harvell’s A Sea of Glass: Searching for the Blaschka’s Fragile Legacy in an Ocean at Risk is a braided work of non-fiction whose three strands focus on the creation of a 19th Century collection of exquisitely crafted glass replicas of marine invertebrates, the biology of the creatures themselves, and Harvell’s attempt through a series of dives to learn how these creatures, so plentiful at the time of their reproduction in glass, are doing in a world grown mostly more inimical to their existence thanks to overfishing, pollution, and most especially global warming. The Blashchkas, a father and son glassmaking team, ended up creating almost 800 of the finely detailed replicas as teaching tools for universities (they were actually more famous for their glass flowers, many of which were displayed in royal gardens). Their dedication and artistic ability can be traced through their letters and journals, through the painstaking notes they took, through the watercolors they created before attempting the same creature in glass, and through the incredible detail of the sculptures, of which experts at the Corning Museum of Glass declared that they could think of no peers, living or dead, who could have achieved the same fine work.Harvell is an excellent guide to the naturalist account of how these creatures live—what they eat and how, how they reproduce, their place in the environmental food web, etc. All of it, explained in precise, clear language is utterly fascinating, even when she describes what she acknowledges are often thought of as the more “dull” creatures, the worms.Meanwhile, her attempt to evaluate these creatures’ vitality in their current existence is highly personal and emotional. Sometimes that emotion is fear or suspense, as she places herself in shark-ridden waters, does a risky night dive, or drops into ocean currents strong enough to rip divers away from their companions and their boats. Often the emotion shared is joyful exuberance as she shares with us her marveling at the gorgeous colors or the ingenuous aspects of a creature’s biology. But too often the primary emotion is despair, as time and again she relates how marine animals are faltering in today’s environments, driven to the edge (or over the edge) of extinction thanks to changing climate or to an overly zealous fishing industry that doesn’t so much overfish these creatures themselves but disrupts their food web so much that the creatures cannot adapt fast enough. A more personal despair arises as well when, in her quest to find a particular type of octopus, she sees several killed for her by a well-meaning but not-fully-understanding local. We mourn with her the creatures’ deaths and her part in it.My only complaint about the book is that Harvell’s prose doesn’t quite rise to the level of her passion or to the visual richness of the creatures or the glass sculptures. As noted above, she’s always lucid when discussing the science, and she conveys the emotional aspects just as clearly as the technical ones. But I found myself wishing at times for a richness or vibrancy of language and lyricism one finds in some well-known naturalist writers such as Diane Ackerman, Wendell Berry, or Scott Russell Sanders. Finally, one cannot leave off discussing Harvell’s book without making note of the many lavish, gorgeous photographs and reprints of the Blashchkas’ sculptures and watercolors, as well as of the living creatures, captured in their underwater environment by her partner David Brown (the two collaborated as well on a short documentary film on this same topic). For those wishing to go beyond the photographs, the sculptures themselves can be seen at the Corning Glass Museum, Cornell, and Harvard, and in addition to its regular holdings, the Glass Museum has a larger temporary exhibit of them until January 2017.Both the sculptures and this book are highly recommended.

To say that biologists can learn about modern sea life from glass models made 140 years ago is to credit both worlds: the close observations of the contemporary scientist and the extraordinary skill of the late nineteenth century Dresden glassmakers Leopold and Rudolf Blaschka. In her book, A Sea of Glass; Searching for the Blaschkas’ Fragile Legacy in an Ocean at Risk, Drew Harvell, Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Cornell University, has succeeded in bringing their glass models to life, searching to find their living counterparts. Each is a metaphor for the other. She sees the glass models as time capsules. Her favorite, the glass model of the common octopus, was carefully restored recently from many small pieces while its living counterpart also lives tenuously today, in its natural habitat. Thus this beautifully written, absorbing, purposeful and eye-opening book presents a time warp: late 19th century glass models and contemporary real specimens, studied on dives by the author in Indonesia, Italy, Hawaii, and the San Juan Islands, Washington State, as well as the low tide flats of Creek Farm, near Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The author begins with a history of these Czech glassblowers, telling how Leopold’s 1853 sea voyage and his observations of jellyfish in the Atlantic, including the Portuguese Man of War, led to a fascination with invertebrate sea animals. This book restores to public view the importance of these invertebrate models which until now have been less well known than the Blaschkas’ glass flowers, notably those in the collection at Harvard University. With this book, the invertebrate sea creatures retake center stage, both for their art and for their contributions to the study of nature or, as the author puts it, the tree of life. The Blaschkas at first made their models from illustrations in books written by mid-century naturalists, but soon turned to making watercolors from living examples that had been shipped from sea stations across Europe to their Dresden studio, where they were kept alive in seawater tanks. Dr. Harvell points out the impossibility of working from deceased invertebrates because, once these boneless creatures die, their bodies almost disappear. Each chapter focuses on one group of invertebrates: anemones and corals, jellyfish, worms, sea slugs, octopus and squid, and sea stars. The book features color plates comparing the glass models with photos of the living invertebrates, many of them taken by the author. The images allow the reader to appreciate both life and glass, neither of which we can easily see first-hand. The book reflects Dr. Harvell’s experiences and observations in her career as a marine biologist on the faculty of Cornell University, whose president in 1885 had acquired the collection of 569 glass models for undergraduates to study. The models were moved later to storage when students were able to study living models. But the glass examples are so accurate that they do have a scientific use today: Dr. Harvell has been able to study and learn about characteristics of the living animals from the glass models. And her enthusiasms on discovering matches for the glass models comes through in her descriptions; she delights the reader with phrases like her comment that the Blaschka tubeworm models deserve “the prize for transforming the normal into the extraordinary.”Dr. Harvell writes about more than the glass models. She is interested in the survival and distribution of the invertebrates that the Blaschkas made drawings and models of, and their survival when faced with overfishing, ocean warming, and ocean acidification. Her dramatic descriptions of her own dives are beautifully written as she located the modern matches for the Blaschkas’ models. At the same time, by focusing on different categories of the invertebrates, she can make observations about their survival or their loss, notably in the case of coral reefs and sea stars. She concludes that “we still have within our reach the fragile legacy of the Blaschkas.”This beautifully written and illustrated book combines history, art, and the scientific, and belongs in school and university libraries, as well as public libraries and those of aquariums and other collections that focus on life in the sea and its fragile legacy. Some of the glass models, with the original watercolors by the Blaschkas, can be seen at the Corning Museum of Glass until January 8, 2017, where they are on exhibition accompanied by videos made by David Brown during dives to search for the living creatures. The exhibition is exquisitely installed and deserves to be seen at other museums.

The books I read usually fall into one of two categories: first, non-fiction that introduces me to new ideas and challenges me to think critically about the world; or second, fiction that sweeps me away from the world of the ordinary to that of the extraordinary. I've found few books that inhabit both categories-- that expose the extraordinary nature of our own world. A Sea of Glass does this elegantly and compellingly, bridging art, science, adventure, and history for a riveting tale of the biome we know least about: the ocean. Harvell's book brims with her unique insights on ocean life and how it is changing, offering hope in a discipline that can often lack it. I eagerly share this book with my friends and family because of how deeply touching it is, and how important a read it is as we strive toward environmental solutions.

If you're not yet an ocean enthusiast, you will be after reading "A Sea of Glass." Dr. Harvell shares her passion and her knowledge of marine invertebrate form and function in a way that speaks to an exceptionally broad-reaching audience. You finish the book with a sense of the diversity of creatures in our oceans, both cryptic (like sea slugs and worms) and iconic (like sea stars, corals, and octopuses), conveyed through Harvell's experiences as field biologist and professor. "A Sea of Glass" breaches the boundaries of science and art, including beautiful photography of the Blaschka glass pieces and watercolors as well as the living representatives of these invertebrates that we can find in the ocean. Awesome read.
