I read a few of the reviews presented here and some are long and involved filled with personal opinions of Holly versus their own lives and I think most people at this point are just wanting to hear if the book is worth putting out the ten bucks for. I am also one of those people who enjoyed the movie and I already knew the story was not going to be the same so I was keying on the writing. The writing is beautiful. They are all short stories, quickly read and enjoyable. The images within the meticulous writing are worthy of a first class writer. The money is well spent for someone who enjoys good writing. The stories are just what they are - stories.

I decided to read Breakfast at Tiffany’s because of the iconic movie in which Audrey Hepburn plays the eccentric 19-year-old Holly Golightly. I was drawn into the complexity of her character and her somewhat posh lifestyle. Truman Capote’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s holds a mysterious aspect to its characters, which compelled me to read more. The fact that I didn’t know too much about the narrator allowed me to experience Holly Golightly under more detail. What made the story so unique was the narration technique Capote used. By making the narrator exist as an extension of Holly, readers could experience his infatuation for her.What really made this book stand out was Capote’s sensitivity and attention to details. Holly’s New York is quite visceral and it’s almost as though I could experience the high end, New York lifestyle in real life. Holly appears an illusion and twists into any shape the people in her life expect her to be. Holly is a walking contradiction, and her mystery only increases with the numbers on the pages. She seems to know nothing about the world, yet she always seems to be one step ahead, knowing just what to say and how to act. Capote writes Holly as a person who listens only to her heart, breaks the rules and doesn't really care about the future. She is the kind of woman that can’t be tamed and who is in a continual search for the place, which she calls "home". I wished Capote had evolved Holly Golightly more as a character. When she runs away to Buenos Aires, the narrator and myself were left with many questions. Has she forgotten about her friend and that's the reason why she never writes to him? Where did her affairs bring her? Did she find that perfect place where she felt like at Tiffany's? Overall, I was pleased with the book and its wholly captivating flight into fancy composed of comedy, romance, poignancy, and Manhattan's East Side areas captured in the loveliest of colors.Michelle T.

Truman Capote was a genius. There isn't much more to say than that. The novella "Breakfast At Tiffany's" and the three short stories in this collection are a brilliant and compelling picture of human nature. Capote strikes the notes between quirky, uncommon people and their actions and simple touching stories. His characters aren't quite lovable (not people you would want to invite over to dinner with the folks) but they are nevertheless very human and often touching, not off-putting. Breakfast At Tiffany's is much grittier than the rather sanitized Audrey Hepburn-George Peppard film version. The final story in the collection, "A Christmas Memory" is potent without being sappy. Capote's style is readable yet poetic and there are times when his turn of phrase is spot on. I was also surprised that the humor in the stories have a very light touch, unlike the more notorious brutal humor of his real-life persona. This book was one of the few that I've fully enjoyed recently.

It had been a while since I last read this, and so I've grown accustomed to saying that I adore Truman Capote with the exception of "Breakfast at Tiffany's". Well, color me wrong, I adore the entirety of Truman Capote, because as much as the stupid, superficial, sterilized film has worked to dim the memory, the novella itself is a triumph. It's transgressive, radical, funny, poignant, and so well written. It's also very meta: Holly asks the narrator (very similar to Capote himself) if he thinks the people will like him writing about "negroes and old maids", whether anyone is really interested in the marginalized. This is, essentially, why he writes about Holly, who is an epitome of marginalization, but also the exact thing that got redacted in the normalization and de-queering of the novella during the movie adaptation. Ha. Well. My edition also had the three short stories: “House of Flowers” of which I'd forgotten, and enjoyed immensely and anew, “A Diamond Guitar” charged with the homoeroticism akin to that of early Kenneth Anger (was he prophecising his infatuation with Perry Smith?), and “A Christmas Memory” which I have always adored. I think the collection of the three—a story about black sex workers in Haiti, a story about prisoners, and a story about an old maidm—are the perfect counterpoint to Holly Golightly's literary criticism. Besides, they're a great sampling of Capote's range.

I bought this book as a gift for my husband along with some gardening tools. He LOVES this book! We have lots of deer on our property who even eat plants and shrubs that are supposedly deer resistant, so there is no way that we want to plant those that are deer candy! At any rate, not only does this book have excellent information about the plants that deer don't eat, but it also gives you ideas about the plants similar to the one you are researching that go well with it. It makes it very easy to plan a garden with this book, even for the beginning gardener. That being said, it is great for advanced gardeners as well. My husband is pretty particular when it comes to books, and has many other gardening books, but this has become his favorite. He is very impressed with how thorough and well organized the book is. Highly recommend!.

I purchased this book as a gift for my brother who loves gardening on his acreage in the Hill Country. However, he struggles with the deer who roam through his property eating much of what he grows unless it is fenced. He likes the book'scategories, like ferns & bulbs, & wants to use the book to select better seeds for his wildflower border on the road to his property. He was most impressed with the categorization up to 10 of how deer resistant a plant was.

I have a lot of deer that roam through my back yard so wanted to learn what I could plant that would be deer resistant. This book gave me some valuable insight in what to plant. I realize it's no guarantee that the deer won't eat something, but I'm hopeful the ideas in the books work. I backed up these suggestions with buying a deer repellent spray. So crossing my fingers that all of my plants/flowers will survive this year.

It has been a very useful guide when I am advising my gardening clients. I also like that it suggests good plant combination in different settings and lights.

I bought this book after checking it out from the library and wanted my own copy. I wish it would have strictly focused on perrenials instead of splitting it up with annuals included. I'm not as concerned with inexpensive annuals but it's a minor complaint. Overall a good reference if you live in deer country like I do.

Good read. Worth the time/money spent. Definitely some plants I will try from this book, though I'm not really a fan of any of the shrubs listed.

There is value to be found in this book. A lot of good information and valuable stories that have proven to be beneficial to officers all across the nation, and I'm sure that many more will continue to learn from this book on into the future. I like to take every chance I can get to learn from a veteran LEO, and appreciate the experience they have.However, this is not "the way of the warrior" or "the philosophy of law enforcement." Those are large claims to be made and the claiming of those titles for this book should not have been done. This book is one man's journey; one man's philosophy on not only law enforcement, but religion, race, sexual orientation and life as a whole.I came to learn more of the mind of those who have gone before, and I did learn a lot, but much of this book is unnecessary. Just as this author cares not for the worldviews of his fellow officers, I could not care less about his views on anything that isn't directly related to law enforcement. The title is deceptive, at best. This book holds very little warrior philosophy, a lot of data on active shooters, which is very helpful, and quite a few interesting anecdotes from the author's past.

Finished this book really fast! Loved it! The only reason I am giving it a 4 star review is because of the section "Red Pill" near the end of the book. Before this section he gives you a warning not to read it if you are in any position other than an investigator. It makes sense because he is mainly talking about the fact that being an investigator is all about finding facts and not having personal beliefs because they can interfere with your job. This makes sense but he goes on a rant essentially about how the Christian belief is false. That's fine, it's his beliefs but I didn't find it necessary to "plug" his beliefs on religion in this book (He mentions in this section that he is an Atheist now) especially because he already mentioned how it was extremely unprofessional to use your religion on the job, i.e. praying with victims, passing out church service cards, etc., which I completely agree with him there. You're a professional and your job is to serve and protect. Otherwise this book is a must have regardless!!

Bernard Schaffer is a very interesting guy. His is an outstanding writer of both fiction & non. He is a police detective. He led another life as a child actor which he tells in another essay, "BJ Schaffer is Dead" about serving his sentence as a child star on TV. As I said: one interesting guy.Here in this short essay, he tells of his journey to & some glimpses of, his life as a police officer. It is a great piece of writing & is both inspiring & honest. He tells it like it is. At least like it is for him. This is not a story of "action & adventure" (although it includes bits of both), but more just man telling about why & how he became a police officer and what it means to him. You feel it. At least I do, when I read it.I say, in the spirit of full disclosure, I have become of fan of Schaffer's fiction & felt I had to to read this. I was fortunate that it was free when I got it in the Kindle Store. It is 99 cents right now. I had not yet read any of his other work yet when I got this. I say now that I have read this, and some of his other work, I would gladly pay a buck for this essay. More, for a collection of his essays, I would gladly pay $10 (and I really enjoy reading well-written essays/articles. Especially those taken from the writer's life).It is a refreshing to read a writer who writes from his heart, while still maintaining his craft. I am sucker for good writing in almost any genre. Bernard J Schaffer is an excellent writer & storyteller, whether telling stories from his life or those he creates from whole cloth (or wherever he gets them from).Here is an excerpt from his essay "BJ Schaffer is Dead" that gives a good taste of the flavor of his writing, & is a nice segue to Way of the Warrior (it is from the last paragraph of that essay, which you can find easily using any good search engine):"Me? I'm a guy who worked at a gas station to make ends meet while I went to the Police Academy. I scrubbed toilets, worked landscaping and mopped laboratories late at night. At 34 years old, I'm a police detective who makes his living putting bad people in dark places. I'm a father to two children, and I can tell you that their love and admiration means more than the vacant adulation of the masses on any level."Not only do I believe him, I feel I learn from him, both about writing & about life. That is valuable. Check out his work.

I purchased this book to gain a better understanding of police. While no one source of info is the only valid source of info, this book provides valuable info and insight. Kindle version has some great and up to date info (21 July 2016). His perspective on the black lives matter movement really made me think hard on what it all truly means. I am not in law enforcement, though I am a senior in college pursuing Criminal Justice so this book is a good insight as to what I want. I am also a USAF veteran, and a lot of the things he points out about people and leadership are hurdles I saw while in the Air Force. This book is a good tool for anyone who wants an lesson about leadership vs. management.

Found this to be an insightful look at real police work and for most it gives the all important mental outlook needed to survive the oppressive negativity faced by officers.

I really liked the beginning. There are some places that need to be reviewed, words are missing or out of place. Then the ending of the book was like a whole different person was writing.

I was really disappointed in this book. It came recommended from a friend and I was hoping for some new ideas or insights around money and economics. It really is just a nonsensical ramble of which I was not able to eke out much. This review is the least I can do to warn others to not repeat my money and time waste.The author spends a lot of time at the beginning critiquing the "myth" of barter (that two paragraph parable at the beginning of 8th grade economics manuals - of how people would try to barter and thus discover it would be easier to use money). He builds this two paragraph parable into a huge straw-man, calling it the "founding myth of economics" which he proceeds to attack. That's his attempt to take down the discipline of economics (pls. note I am not calling it a science). That's like taking down anatomy because the anatomy drawings in the 6th grade manual are not accurate.The barter parable is meant to illustrate that any transactions (barter, credit, taxes etc) are nearly impossible without a universal unit of measure for value exchanged. Which is money. The parable uses the example of barter for a transaction because it is much easier for 8th graders to imagine that rather than more complicated transactions such as credit and taxes.He argues that anthropologists found no societies without money in which significant volumes of barter exists. Of course they did not. Without money it is impossible to keep track of the price of everything against everything. Which is the point the barter parable is trying to make in a simplistic way.Next the author argues that money is tied to credit transactions (including taxes) and that credit and money are really like the chicken and the egg. Of course they are. Credit transactions are exchanges of value with a time lag. Without a way to quantify the value exchanged they are nearly impossible to make (just like barter). And of course money is not coins. Coins are just symbols for money just like bank notes.The radical idea found by the author is that exchanges of value (trading goods, trading value in time as in credit, paying taxes) are impossible without a way to measure that value. Which btw. is exactly what the economists' parable of barter is trying to say too.All of this is peppered with random anthropological accounts, quotes from Nietzsche, quotes from some french economists about our primordial debt to gods, cries that our lives have become a "series of commercial transactions", and nonsensical expressions such as "bourgeois assumptions" (really? bourgeois?).The intent is to argue that money was involved in almost everything bad people did to each other through history and therefore there's something mysterious and bad about money (debt = money = slavery = capitalism = bad, or something like that). But wooden sticks, metals, clothes, and pretty much everything else including language were also involved in pretty much everything bad some people did to some other. So why single out money? Because it is an abstract concept, and abstract and invisible things draw weak minds like candles draw moths.Ever wonder why loonies come up with perpetual motion machines involving electricity and magnetism a lot more often than involving mechanics or thermodynamics? For the same reason - electricity and magnetism, just like money, are invisible and mysterious. Easier to make up fantasies about.

Graeber's book is a long, slow read, yet it is a fascinating page-turner for which I enjoyed EVERY SINGLE PAGE. I would highly recommend this five-star book to anyone who enjoys investigating the mysteries of economics in our modern world and to anyone who enjoys history, sociology, anthropology, or looking for major historical trends which tie together and explain world events.I saw a few critical reviews while reading this book, and now that I have finished, my opinion is that anyone who negatively reviews this book only read a portion of it. Most of the critical reviews are dismissive of his "point-of-view" as being "wrong." However, anyone who has actually read the whole book realizes that he has stepped back and looked at these issues from multiple perspectives and through the lens of multiple disciplines. People who are upset by this book (or by the introductory chapters) are upset because today's economics teaching focuses only on a small piece of the "economics thought pie" (my term) which is out there. Graeber steps out into discussing pieces which are less covered (or not covered at all) in typical economics classes in the West of today. So, rather than reading through his arguments, and seeing where they wind up by reading the whole book, I am certain these people gave up only part-way into the book, and then wrote a negative review because the ideas are different (much wider and more complicated) than they have been taught, and they find it "out of their paradigm" and just can't accept reading further. Yet, anyone should be able to read alternative ideas that challenge traditional ideas in order to see if their beliefs really stand up under scrutiny.So much information is packed into Debt: The First 5,000 Years, that it could easily have been written as five separate stand-alone books. As an anthropologist at the London School of Economics, Graeber wrote a massive, sprawling history of debt, credit, and the development of markets and money; he ties it to war, slavery, taxes, tribute, government bureaucracy, religious thought, and both local and international trade, by looking at societies from ancient Mesopotamia, to India, to China, to ancient Greece and Rome, to Latin America, to the Middle Ages, and to the Modern Ages.Why did he do it this way? Several reasons. First, as an anthropologist, he felt he was in a unique position to help us completely rethink our sense of the rhythms of economic history. Economists and historians, he points out, normally come at history in opposite directions. "Economists tend to come at history with their mathematical models--and the assumptions about human nature that come along with them--already in place: it's largely a matter of arranging the data around equations. Historians .....often refuse to extrapolate at all; in the absence of direct evidence.....they will not ask whether it is reasonable to make (certain) assumptions....this is why we have so many "histories of money" that are actually histories of coinage....Anthropologists, in contrast, are empirical--they don't just apply preset models--but they also have such a wealth of comparative material at their disposal they CAN actually speculate about what village assemblies in Bronze Age Europe or credit systems in ancient China were likely to be like. And they can reexamine the evidence to see if it confirms or contradicts their assessment." Second, as a admirer of French anthropologist Marcel Mauss, by writing this book, Graeber feels he has put to rest the real "pet peeve" of anthropologists everywhere--the myth of barter. I found this a shocking idea when introduced to it at the beginning of the book, but he has really convinced me as a reader through his extensive and comprehensive looks at every possible facet of this question.I will try to summarize in one paragraph the large sweeping ideas covered in this book. What is money, really? What determines what gets used as money, and why? Certain historical ages operated on mutual credit systems, with practically no coinage at all in circulations (for hundreds or even thousands of years at a time); other ages operated with coin made out of various precious metals. What were the differences between the types of ages when these different types of systems occurred in societies around-the-world, and what were the causes of these differences? Historically, when did these various ages occur, and why? What is happening now, and is the current situation in the world changing? We seem to have recently entered a new age of credit, but in many ways, completely unlike past ages of credit, with historical trends now completely reversed between creditors and debtors compared to past credit ages. How does war and slavery factor into all of this? What is capitalism and how did it come about? Does it really work as it claims to? What are the problems and myths associated with capitalism? What does faith and credit in government and society mean, and what has it meant throughout all historical ages around-the-world? These are just a few of the book's largest questions.Now I will touch on what this book meant to me personally. As an American living overseas in North Africa, I really enjoyed his discussion of how credit was handled during the Middle Ages in Europe, with most people living on credit in regards to each other. It reminded me of the system we even continue to use in North Africa, even in cities, with the merchants at the corner stores (which are our societal equivalents of 7-11 stores). Each family has a notebook which they bring with them to the store each time they want to purchase something. The merchant notes it in the book, and accounts are settled up at the end of the month. Without cash or coin available to most of the populace in the European Middle Ages, everyone operated on such bases with their neighbors, everyone kept accounts, and accounts were settled up in the whole village once or twice a year, usually at specific times or festivals. I found this really interesting. Many such examples from the book meant something to me in my own life, but they would be too numerous to list here.The price of this paperback was one for which I got more than my money's worth, many times over, for the many pleasurable hours of reading, and all I learned, in a highly-enjoyable and extremely well-written text. I wish I could sit in on David Graeber's class. Be prepared--you will want to discuss this book with friends, so try to get a friend or a book club group to read it with you.

Reading this book has given me an understanding of world history at a level I have never reached before. I highly recommend it for anyone interested in world history.At the same as reading this book, I was also reading books by Fools Crow, Crow Dog and Bear Heart. Each of these authors describe how the Federal Government set out to use debt to subjugate and eradicate Native Americans just as described in Graeber's book.

This biography of Alexander Graham was the only one I could find at the time I was looking for it. Obviously, I wasn't looking very good as later I discovered a bit more thorough ones. However, I found this small biography surprisingly good and interesting. I enjoyed it and would recommend it to everyone who wants to read a relative short/quick book about the life of Alexander Graham Bell.The book has 12 chapters, each chapter detailing a period of his life. Alexander Graham Bell was born in Scotland but early in his life moved to London. He lived there until his brothers died of TBC and his parents, with him, moved to Canada. There, he continues his family work of teaching to deaf children and that way also met his wife. He also gets more serious about invention. Originally he was suppose to build a better version of the telegraph, but he ended up making the telephone. Before reading this book, I thought that must have been his masterpiece and greatest invention. It turns out that Bell was a very active inventor and he invented many other things such as medical equipment, metal detector, and the bell unit for measure sound. Not only that, he also started several organizations that have been around for a long time, the most surprising to me was his involvement in Science and National Geographic.Bell's life came as a bit of a surprise to me as he has had much more influence than I expected. This book did a good job summarizing his life. Not only that, it is full of pictures and drawing of Bell and his family and the things he invented. All in all making it an easy to ready book about a very productive inventor.The only drawback of the book is that it is short and doesn't go that deep into Bell's life. That is the intention of the book as it is also aimed at older children and younger adults. You need to know that before getting this book, if you want a move thorough biography then one of the other thicker books might be more suited. If you want a quick biography because you are interested in Bell's life and achievements... then look no further. 4 starts.
