The Southern Gates of Arabia: A Journey in the Hadhramaut, by Freya Stark

In 1934, famed British traveler Freya Stark sailed down the Red Sea, alighting in Aden, located at the tip of the Arabian peninsula. From this backwater outpost, Stark set forth on what was to be her most unforgettable adventure: Following the ancient frankincense routes of the Hadhramaut Valley, the most fertile in Arabia, she sought to be the first Westerner to locate and document the lost city of Shabwa. Chronicling her journey through the towns and encampments of the Hadhramaut, The Southern Gates of Arabia is a tale alive with sheikhs and sultans, tragedy and triumph. Although the claim to discovering Shabwa would not ultimately be Stark's, The Southern Gates of Arabia, a bestseller upon its original publication, remains a classic in the literature of travel. This edition includes a new Introduction by Jane Fletcher Geniesse, Stark's biographer.

One of the greatest travel stories ever written. One of my favorite books of all time. Better than most fiction of this type. Poignant, fascinating, absorbing. I was sad that it ended. I look forward to reading it again in a couple of years.

I found this book absolutely fascinating as it described a time, only 70-odd years ago, when there truly were unexplored reaches, where legend and history still co-existed, and where a culturally sensitive and aware, and properly respectful traveler could find peaceful and fulfilling adventure. This book is even more interesting now, given the changes in the Middle East in the past ten years. Can one imagine making the same kind of journey in Yemen now? Of course not; it would almost be suicide. That time has long since been destroyed, everything about this book but its pure physical setting gone, so this memoir is even more poignant and compelling.Stark has an eye for detail, as jaundiced as it is with the unavoidable Orientalism of her time and socio-cultural context. This can be forgiven/overlooked, and she's a lot more fair and obliging when describing those she encounters than the majority of her contemporaries. She's at her best when describing the landscapes she is encountering, the stark desert and wadis, the unexpected lushness of the oases and tucked-away mountain crevices where all the shades of green burst forth.More than anything, what comes through in this book is Stark's grace and abiding respect for the people she meets. She has taken the time to learn their language, and is familiar with their culture, and takes pains to encounter them in terms that will make them comfortable. She does not attempt to bend anyone to a Western European point of view. This is not to say she is subservient or fawning; she most certainly stands up for herself when it is required. But throughout the book and on this journey, her continued success comes from her honesty tinged with her respect for the region and the people with whom she is interacting. This engenders respect for her in return.I found the three maps in the beginning of the book at first absolutely invaluable as references to Stark's locations and progress. I then found the maps to be absolutely infuriating, due to their black/white printing, the too-small script, the confusing order of the maps, the contradictory scales and place-name differences, etc. I ended up abandoning the book's maps and opening my unabridged atlas to Yemen and tracking her movement there. Editors: if you're going to offer maps in a book like this, make sure the maps are actually worthwhile and readable. Two scholarly additions to the book are good. Stark's appendix on the "Southern Incense Route of Arabia" is a fascinating account of exactly what she was looking for, and what brought her to the Hadramaut in the first place. It's her indirect formal scholarly statement of motivation. This appendix would have been well-placed as a foreword to this book, serving to establish her motivation and objective. Stark lists her sources, and they're offered as a listed bibliography immediately after the appendix. There is also an index, but for whatever reason, many of the persons and places in the text are not included, and there is no cross-referencing. For example, the names of individual wadis are placed in the index as "Sidun, Wadi," and are not cross-referenced with a "Wadi Sidun" entry.Bottom line: If you're one of the many readers newly interested in Islam, Arabs and the Middle East, and are looking for some context beyond the latest book on extremism or terrorism, something to add depth to what you think you understand, then this book will do you well. If you're looking for some insight into the cultures and traditions of Islam, this also will move you in that direction. If you're looking for a glimpse into a time when the West and Islam actually got along on a basis of mutual respect, this enjoyable book will tell you about it.

I found this book very interesting having recently visited Dubai. It gives an insight into the world of Arabia before it was spoilt by oil.I was impressed by the bravery of Freya Stark for venturing into this fairly unknown part of the world and am grateful to her for the knowledge.I am planning to buy another of her books

This was so interesting. A wonderful story about a little known area of the world. The fact that this was a personal journey made it even more interesting.

It arrived in time ...but folded at the edge as u see in the photo .. Am eager to read the book for it is about the government I live in ..Kingdom of Hudramaut ...

As a big fan of Thesiger and Villiers, I've been a little spoiled when it comes to Arabian travel writings. In contrast I found Freya Stark's writing style and journey incredibly boring. Her descriptions of events and people are uniformly vague and shallow. This is especially frustrating when she just glosses over some event or custom that I would have loved to know more about. For example, she mentions the fact that many of the Bedu she meets are dyed indigo to protect themselves from the sun, but never goes into detail about what to me is a very fascinating and little known practice. I haven't been able to find information about Beduin, or any other people, dying their bodies indigo in any other source so I was a big frustrated by this lack of depth. I guess its important to remember that Freya Stark's works are mostly just diaries, they weren't meant to be published as anthropological works, and so might not be very interesting to anyone but herself!!

Freya is limited with details, introspection, and understanding of the people she visited. She had bureaucratic connections that paved the way for her, and traveled in rather "grande dame' style, considering the areas and era of her travels. She does speak Arabic, but doesn't seem to empathize with people she meets.

Great book! Our book club loves Freya books!

"Ms. Ravitch...writes with enormous authority and common sense."―New York Times"In an age when almost everybody has an opinion about schools, Ravitch's name must be somewhere near the top of the Rolodex of every serious education journalist in this country."―Nation"Ms. Ravitch [is] the country's soberest, most history-minded education expert."―Wall Street Journal"Ravitch's hopeful vision is of a national curriculum--she's had enough of fly-by-night methods and unchallenging requirements. She's impatient with education that is not personally transformative. She believes there is experience and knowledge of art, literature, history, science, and math that every public school graduate should have."―Christian Science Monitor"The book intelligently and readably addresses today's education controversies, using a combination of anecdotes, case studies, and statistics.... [I]t's a must-read for education policymakers at all levels of government."―National Review"Ravitch's critique is an essential one--passionate, well considered and completely logical."―Time Magazine"Diane Ravitch is arguably our leading historian of primary and secondary education."―Andrew Delbanco, New York Review of Books"Ravitch is our best living historian of education. In my view she is the best ever."―Jay Matthews, WashingtonPost.com"The book that follows is, if not a mea culpa, perhaps something more valuable--a fiercely argued manifesto against fads in education reform and for public schools, and the teachers and students who inhabit them."―Boston Globe"The Death and Life of the Great American School System may yet inspire a lot of high-level rethinking."―Los Angeles Times

Everyone has an opinion about K-12 education. Maybe that's because everyone has been a student, a parent, or both; has sat in a classroom, has studied with a teacher--a good one or a bad one. But it is in the nature of education that it will be as imperfect as the humans who teach and learn, as the parents who raise the students. It will never accomplish everything, be all things to all citizens. Over time there have been a million utopian projects to reform education, to make it fit the politics, the economic and technological plans of as many different "stakeholders" as there have been generations of students. The one thing that all these plans share is their overweening comprehensiveness, the arrogance of their belief that those with the political power or the money know better than the professionals--their sheer contempt for what the American public school system has accomplished in spite of its warts and blemishes.Near the end of this powerful book, Diane Ravitch, one of the premier educational historians of our time, makes this somewhat understated observation -- "American education has a long history of infatuation with fads and ill-considered ideas" -- and asks the question "Who will stand up to the tycoons and politicians and tell them so?" Ravitch may mean this as a rhetorical question, but the answer is obvious: Diane Ravitch will stand up to them. And that is what she does in this magnificent book.Because our country has not had the stomach to thrash out WHAT should be taught in our schools -- to work our way through to a basic curriculum -- the focus of reform has been on the HOW: on high-stakes testing of limited basic skills, on accountability and results without understanding of what those results signify, on school size, vouchers, school choice, on "blueprints" for improvement informed by fads like "balanced literacy" or "whole language." Such focus on form over content leads to cynicism and gaming the system to achieve mandated results, however unrealistic, to teaching to the test, and to the micro-management of education professionals by outsiders qualified only by political office or wealth. Chapter by chapter Ravitch tells the story of one after another such fiasco. Not only do these grand plans turn into pitiful, predictable flops but, in the most tragic cases, they destroy viable community schools, both public and private (see the evisceration of a Catholic private school system that was an avenue to the middle class for generations of urban children). Both right and left are guilty, and no political party nor entrenched interest escapes Ravitch's wilting exposure. My favorite chapter is "What Would Mrs. Ratliff Do?" We all remember the extraordinary teacher, the one whose passion turned on whole classrooms--the teachers who became the voices in our heads that set standards of logic, grammar, accuracy, integrity for all our lives. For Ravitch, one of these was her English teacher "Mrs. Ratliff." I remember Miss Jans and Miss Schultz. My children were ignited by the purple pen of the amazing Mrs. Goddard. Like Ravitch, and in the name of Mrs. Ratliff, we must all square off against educational reforms that make it harder for the wonderful idiosyncratic brilliance of the master teacher to flourish in the neighborhood school. Those schools can take only so much abuse from the arrogant do-gooders, the reformers who think they know more than the parents, the uninformed hard-liners. The virtue of this book is that it is not a "blueprint." But it should give courage to all of us who truly love our children and our schools: the courage to resist and to speak "common sense" to power.

In "The Death and Life of the Great American School System: How Testing and Choice Are Undermining Education," Diane Ravitch provides a comprehensive, incisive, and fervent critique of the current decades long No Child Left Behind (NCLB) and Race to the Top reform movements.Ravitch produces conclusive data to support her transformation from an early supporter of test-based teacher accountability and the trend toward privatization of public schools to becoming a fervent critic and an advocate for education professionals. Her support for the No Child Left Behind Act gives her the unique perspective of someone who know and understands the good intentions and laudable goals of this crop of education reformers. Her career as a education historian makes her uniquely qualified to put this movement into perspective. Having seen NCLB fully implemented, she understands the negative impact of simplistic top-down bottom-line business models. With standardized tests as their underpinning, teaching becomes data collection. While the teacher is collecting the data, the student is learning to take tests.Once again, politicians and wealthy businessmen have foisted yet another ill-conceived reform on educators. Perhaps because almost everyone has "gone to school" at some point in their lives, they feel they know what needs to be done to "fix" public education. But as may seem obvious, while we have all been students, we have not all become public school teachers and administrators. Ravitch gives voice to those education professionals. She provides line after line of quotable material that educators will find reassuring and absolutely true.At times, the cumulative data and logic seemed repetitious; however, when repeated, it was for the most part included in a new context, applied to a different situation, and a careful reading rendered the data again relevant. As of this writing, aside from the inevitable attacks from right-wing ideologues, The Death and Life of the Great American School System: How Testing and Choice Are Undermining Education has accumulated hundreds of positive reviews in print and online. In skimming these reviews, I found one from a college student who was "required" to read the book. The student wrote that it was just "okay" and predictably gave it three stars, thus illustrating the difficulties in education. Of course students blanche at "requirements." You must "teach" it, make it come alive with life experience, make it relevant - good teachers do that. While the book may have been less than thrilling to the student, the learning experience becomes worthwhile. In the corporate business model, teaching means making sure the student passes an often unreliable standardized test. If the student does poorly on the fill-in-the-bubble test, then the teacher is "bad." This is obvious folly.Coincidentally, I wrote an article, "The Essence of Teaching and Learning," just prior to reading Ravitch's book and was delighted and amused about the commonality of our views. (I have since revised to reference her work.) In my article, I wrote, "The essence of teaching and learning lies in the hundreds of moments a day when students learn something as a result of the teacher's actions. What they learn depends on teacher experience, temperament, and creativity, but also on administrative leadership, curriculum, political demands, and parental influences. Additionally, learning is affected by the wealth of the district, background of individual students, class size, classmates, social dynamic of the class, and the physical class environment. And much more of course. It's easy to see how the variables increase exponentially."Additionally, because I have written fiction all my life, I logically use that medium to help shed light on an often misunderstood profession. My guess is that about ninety-nine percent of teachers are not overpaid laggards, as ultra right wing pundits want you to believe. As I try to show in my novel, "No Teacher Left Standing," this piling on of negative influences can create extremely tense situations that are overcome only by the devotion, tenacity and strength of teachers.Jeff May (Jeffrey Penn May), educator and author of No Teacher Left Standing, married to a brilliant elementary school teacher.

This book is a sorrowful confession and an attempt at atonement by Diane Ravitch for her part in the seduction of power exercised by 'policy making/makers' in Washington and how her participation in this process resulted in gross errors in directing public school reform. Her introduction describes her heady inclusion during the last few decades in directing public school policy toward a corporate model and beyond. In the book, Ravitch admits her error in supporting accountibility through testing and school choice via voucher and how these policies were and are not appropriate for the structure necessary to provide good public education to theour American children. She admits that public education policy must strive to improve the social and ecomonic lot of the disadvantage, attempt to maximize the potential of every student, to provide the best support to the classroom teacher possible, and to focus on the classroom - not on some grand scheme from the corporate world that has little understanding of what goes on in the nation's classroom. Ravitch details other reform policies gone amuck including the billionaires' foundatiions that have influence public education policy through their own specific flavor of predjudices. With her tail between her legs, Ravitch sheepishly proffers the hope that somehow these mistakes can be rectified to once again put our priorities on children and teachers in the classrooms. Oh, how sad she would be if it is too late. This book will move you to action regarding the incompetent job our policy makers and political system as a whole has done in educating our children through the American school system.

I found this book very insightful, though a bit repetitive. It could almost be summed up by saying, "You never get a second chance to make a first impression," but Mr. De Souza goes farther than that, revealing how changing just a few words can drive any conversation in the right direction. Perhaps even more useful, he shows how the wording of a few sentences is almost certain to get a rejection, whether the "no" answer is spoken or not. The most provocative idea asserted by De Souza is that the very highest percentage of potential clients make up their minds to do business with a representative in the first 30 seconds, well before any formal presentation is made. In that 30 seconds, a client answers these questions in his mind: "Who are you?"; "Can I trust you?";"Are you interesting?"; and "Do I want to do business with you?" I recommend this book for new or current financial/insurance advisers who want to self-evaluate or polish their approaches.

I've been following Tom "Big Al" Schreiter for over 20 years now and I even had his original "rainbow" Big Al books way back then. This book is a great read for any insurance and financial advisor looking to learn better planned communication language skills. I happen to like the various phrases that were scattered throughout the book as well as the leading words to begin a question. If you want to improve your communication skills and phrases, this is a GREAT book to get started with - particularly if you are in management and want to start off new agents & advisors on the right foot!

A good read. I read it in a few hours, the same day I bought it. There are a lot of good phrases, quotes and lines to incorporate while on an appointment with a prospect. I'm always looking for ways to improve my "closing" skills and this book offers good ideas and language to accomplish this.

Most sales people want to be more successful. It is OK if you decide not to read this book if you are happy with your current results and level of success. It is also OK to buy this book and tweak your process to take your production to the next level and beyond.

Improve your close ratio!! Help you and your client work together to get to a 'Yes' decision!!

Bernie DeSouza guides the reader through the prospect's thought process on first impressions and the words to use to build trust, rapport and belief with the prospect. Well written, easy to read and full of easy to use ideas and recommendations.

Interesting that a big piece was talking about how to build a useful website that runs both on a PC and on mobile. Well sir, it looks like crap on mobile.

The best teachings are usually very simple. Most times we try to over complicate things. Began using the lessons immediately with much success.

Schumann on Music: A Selection from the Writings (Dover Books on Music) is an excellent resource for anyone who is interested in the music of the German romantic movement, in particular the music of Chopin, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Clara Schumann, Tchaikovsky, Liszt, and indirectly, Schumann himself.I'm reviewing this book for my own blog, and so this is a little more brief than I would like it to be. But Schumann is not only knowledgeable and enthusiastic, he was very much an insider as a composer himself, as a former performer in these early years of the ascendancy of the piano as the solo instrument of choice (his concert career was interrupted by an early hand injury), but also a connoisseur of contemporary German literature, and its influence on music (and a personal friend of many important authors).Arch

I loved reading Robert Schumann's essays on music! He was witty, but kind, and reading about music I can listen to today is great as it's nice to read an article that was done in the time it was written. He had an amusing style of writing! I wish there were more of his articles in print, and in English.

Interesting book.

Great product, in great conditions! thank you! Obrigada :-)Very useful for my researches on Schumann due to my lack of intimacy with the german language.

It is very difficult for us to see and understand the present as a confluence of a vast array of tributaries from the past. To us it appears as the single world. It certainly has constituent parts, but we cannot readily apprehend what has been discarded and forgotten or why the things extant were remembered. The past has a flatness to it that only diligent and attentive study can remedy. Unfortunately, in music, we are forgetting almost everything because the current conglomeration of commercial activities we label music has so little in common with what the artists of the past were interested in creating and performing. If you want evidence for my claim, you simply need to pick up this extremely valuable little book. Henry Pleasants, himself a gifted writer on music, has edited and translated some of the great Robert Schumann's writings on music. Schumann himself is suffering from an unjustified eclipse at present. He was also a wonderfully great composer of music and an insightful writer, popularizer, and critic. With all the lesser music being programmed and performed nowadays, we should get back to Schumann right away before we cheat ourselves of one of our great composers. What is important about this collection is not what it confirms about our present tastes, or even what Schumann expresses that disagrees with our own views. What is fascinating to me is how many of the subjects he discusses have fallen from our consciousness, from our sense of history, from our artistic traditions.Just as a few examples. Have you heard any of the John Field piano concertos? I haven't. Yet in 1836, Schumann in the guise of Florestan raves over Field's seventh piano concerto. Now, I am not saying that the Field concertos are good or bad, I have not heard them, but how could they have fallen into such complete eclipse given what is being performed nowadays? What about the concertos of Moscheles, Döhler, and Herz? (Döhler and Herz?!)There is so much here that it brings the musical scene of Schumann's time (mid-1830s to early 1840s) to life. We get to read contemporary appraisals of works we have retained in the repertoire and works that have fallen into eclipse and others that are so far removed from our conceptions of our musical tradition that one might have to travel to a moon of Saturn to find a copy.Unless you already have other volumes of Schumann's writings, this book deserves to be in your library. Your music education will be enriched by spending a few hours reading these short articles and thinking about what they mean about our understanding of the past and our sense of musical tradition in our present.

This book represents a wonderful cross section of Schumann's writings on his philosophy of music and critiques of specific works. Schumann, in addition to being a talented composer, was a gifted writer whose style will appeal to a wide variety of readers and whose ideas on music and musical style are as applicable today as they were in his time. His early tendency to present his ideas via conversations between the characters of the Davidsbund is extremely entertaining. This book also gives great insight into Robert Schumann the man, the musician/composer, and the philosopher/critic.

Warriors: The Lost Warrior, by Erin Hunter Dan Jolley

From Publishers Weekly

Based on Erin Hunter's popular novel series, Warriors is the story of a wild cat—a real one, as opposed to manga's usual teenaged human wearing a short skirt and kitty-cat ears—who's separated from his family and friends. There are no plot surprises in this story of a lost hero, and the artwork is a literal, workmanlike rendition of cats and dogs in suburbia. Graystripe, the protagonist, is a mighty warrior of the beleaguered Thunderclan, which has recently been threatened by a combination of suburban development and a zealous cat catcher. The story opens with him imprisoned in a strangely seductive suburban home. After briefly succumbing to the charms of soft living as a kittypet, Graystripe steels his resolve and vows to make his way back to the wild. Alas, he's lost his edge and finds himself spooked by everything from local bullies to lawnmowers. Luckily, he's joined by a helpful, attractive female sidekick, Millie, who knows her way around the challenges of Twolegplace. Many little (and perhaps some larger) girls will find this kitty fantasy irresistible. (May) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

I LOVE this manga! I may be on The New Prophesy: Dawn and just lost Graystripe😢 but I miss him already. He and Millie and the name of manga 3 (Warriors Return) tells me I will be with him on the blank page soon! But the book is a small tear-trip. Sure I am emotional but this makes me a little sad! Seeing how Graystripe was Stolen, seeing how Graystripe and Firestar met in The Prophesies Begin: Into the Wild, seeing Silverstream and Feathertail again. Trust me, if you missed them or thought awww when Firestar met Graystripe, TRUST ME you WILL cry!! A LOT!😢😢😢

My son loves the Warriors books. For a 14 yr old who typically wants a video game over a book, this impresses me. He enjoys the pace and writing in these novels, and the subject matter interests him. He even named a pet after a character in this series. The book arrived quickly and was new, as stated. A great value as well. I now get all of his Warriors books on Amazon.

Book content good but was supposed to be new condition. Came in worn condition

Not quite what I expected

I really liked it, it's not as good as the non manga books but it was still really good though.

Omg so this is what happens but really Erin you could have put some more action into it I mean really make the bad parts shorter and extend it#teammapleshade

Awesome!

My 9 year old son loves the Warriors books (he is in 3rd grade). He is trying to collect them all. They have both graphic novels (comic-strip like) and larger fiction novels.
