I began really enjoying this book but the further I read, the more I realised that for an historical novel, the author did not manage to portray the era with complete authenticity in the way she writes. The characters were speaking in current style language and this is very disconcerting when it is supposed to be New Zealand in the mid 1800s. Naturally the novel would not be readable if the language was totally Victorian, but American useage such as 'blown away', "playful lace curtains" does not give the novel historical credibility. The author has done some good research on sheep farming in New Zealand but there are also numerous things that are not historically correct, including.......New Zealand in those days used Pounds, not dollars for the currency, New Zealanders do not say "fall"- autumn is the correct terminology. As it was a mainly Scottish and British Colony, coffee was not common as most people drank tea. NB: Not just Americans download books from Amazon but people such as me, an Australian who frequently visits our close neighbour New Zealand, do too.I have been reading historical novels all my life and like many fans of this genre, like the novel to reflect the chosen era with more attention to historically correct detail. Sarah Lark's writing flows well and her style is good. I will be looking for more of her novels in the future.

Women didn't have a lot of choice in the direction of their lives in mid nineteenth century England. Helen Davenport was working as a tutor when a notice in her church bulletin led her to accept a marriage proposal to an unknown sheep farmer in New Zealand. Gwyneira Silkham's future was determined when her father lost a hand of cards to a self proclaimed sheep baron also from the Christchurch area of New Zealand. These women's lives were tied together from the time they set foot on the ship that transported them to their new homes.Marrying a gentleman in a newly settled English colony had seemed exciting and romantic to both ladies. It was only after they left the ship that they realised how little they were prepared for the hardships of living in such a new colony. Distances between farms was huge, communication was as fast as a horse could travel. Both women had to chose whether to embrace their Maori neighbours and learn their language, about their culture and beliefs or to follow their husbands lead and treat them at best as hired help.I feel that Gwyn and Helen reacted very much as women of that time period. Once they arrived in New Zealand, they had little choice but to accept their circumstances and make the best of them. We spend a lot of time with Gwyn, her husband Lucas and Helen and learn lots about them. We see the three of them learn and grown from the situations they find them selves in. .I have an affection for anything kiwi and this book was no exception. I read it compulsively. I loved the glowing descriptions of the breath taking country side as well as the gritty ones of the towns and roads. Of course, you can't tell a story of this time period of New Zealand without talking about sheep. They are central to this tale. Yes, there are sheep and all that goes with them, but it doesn't overwhelm the entire story. Author Sarah Lark has a good balance between the storyline of the people and the sheep talk and tied them together well. While reading this book, I did feel a distance between the author and the tale. It seemed that it was a story written by someone who had never been to New Zealand and that she was only imagining what it would be like to stand on it's soil, to view a flock of sheep on a hill, or to crest a peak and view the land unfolding below her. Whether author Sarah Lark has visited Christchurch or this connection was lost due to the work of the translator D. W. Lovett, it was still a captivating read which I very much enjoyed. The story continues in Song of the Spirits and then in Call of the Kiwi.Sarah Lark is a pen name of Christiane Gohl. She also publishes under Ricarda Jordan and Elisabeth Rotenberg.

The idea behind this first volume is OK, tracing two women's adjustments to very different social circumstances in their new southern home land. The narrative drags through detail that should have been edited out.The familiarity of the author with details of New Zealand environmental history is questionable. The translator has used Americanisms, such as drapes for curtains, and translations of Maori words that belie the authenticity of any research the author may have conducted. Thus its place as a historical novel is questionable.

I just loved this Trilogy. I had not read a Historical Fiction Book for so long and this was just perfect. It mainly takes place in New Zealand and of course there is the wonderful family of the Historical Fiction. The characters were all quite different in what they wanted to do with their life and it was still the thing to go to War and some did and go to college was a little new for them but some went. I think Sarah Lark is a wonderful author and she can really weave a story in and out and make it continue with interest in 3 books. Another thing is it was so easy to read and remember all of the characters in the books. Thank you Amazon for recommending this Trilogy.Fluffy

I really enjoyed this as a romantic novel. I liked the way the characters were drawn, but it did get a little long and drawn out in the end. The tying off of the ends was a little bit too neat and lacked the passion that was more evident earlier in the book. I was enjoying it so much I read late into the night. HOWEVER, my advice is that if your are a New Zealander, don't bother to read it! There are so many errors and it really irritated me when I was getting into the story and yet another anomaly popped up and jolted me out of the story. The language used was totally inappropriate, both for the 1800s and NZ. No one uses the word 'Mom' and children were certainly not called kids. New Zealand didn't use dollars and cents until 1967. Lake Benmore where the characters lived is an artifical hydro lake made in the 1960s. The Maori language was the worst!!!! The south island iwi (tribe) is Ngai Tahu, not Kai Tahu, moko are facial tattoos, not moku. It's incredibly difficult to write about a culture in a foreign language then have it translated into English by someone who doesn't understand the culture. It comes cross as very stereotypical. So yes,a good yarn in terms of a story, but do be aware that there are lots of inaccuracies if you' re looking at this as a portrait of life in colonial New Zealand. There are many other books that do that much better.

#45,516 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

The book is really thoughtful, practical, and excellently produced and written. It starts with a brief introduction to permaculture that builds on historical origins but avoids being a repeat of Mollison's visionary work. Practical Permaculture gives very clear examples, bases information on science, and modernizes concepts appropriately for 2015. The framework of the book is a step by step, well thought-out- process to designing a site using permaculture principles . "Designing a site" is one of the most important permaculture activities - the book helps you learn the important characteristics of your farm/backyard/community garden, deciding your goals, and placing elements such as plants, orchards, households, coops, ponds etc so they can reinforce each other following the dynamics of nature. It teaches the use of design tools such as sectors, zones, edges, and patterns in non-nonsense, approachable style. By following this book you'll have learned a lot and taken many of the important first steps in setting up a sustainable and enjoyable system. While many other other general permaculture books may be a repeat of Mollison's "Designer's Manual", the authors here provide genuine value and insight into the process of design, considering modern tools and options, and focusing on the actionable and pragmatic aspects of implementing a permaculture project. They also bring experience applying permaculture in colder climates and can put forth relevant species and examples of techniques to the table. The quality of the book is very high - materials, design, layout, illustrations are great.Having read many (most) of available books on the topic, and as a holder of a Permaculture Design Certificate I find myself recommending and gifting this book again and again for those who are new to Permaculture, and to those that are more aware of Permaculture generally but ask "so... how do I start"? This has been a great addition to my library - even though it ends up open on my desk most of the time. I hope the authors consider embarking on additional writing projects.

Practical Permaculture offers a wide variety of suggestions for making land more sustainable. The book lists ideas to improve just about any piece of land and at different costs. Some of them are cheap and easy, like composting, while other require more money, like building an energy efficient home. This means that there is something here useful regardless of a reader's income level . The book also offers useful tips for different climates and what plants and building techniques work well there. Most of these suggestions are light in details, but the authors list books that interested readers can go to for more in-depth coverage. There are a few things I take issue with in the book. The section on building houses includes wattle and daub and straw bale houses. I understand that these building materials are sustainable using local resources, but I have to question whether sustainability is being given more consideration than durability. People stopped using these building materials long ago and for good reasons. The authors also advocate guerrilla gardening, making changes to someone else's property without their permission. Improving a piece of wasted land is noble when it's yours, but some of the changes in this book are criminal, like cutting off a branch of someone else's tree and grafting on one that yields fruit or planting your vegetables seeds in their flowerbeds and expecting to harvest the produce. If you wouldn't want someone else messing with your land, don't expect them to like you doing it to theirs. Lastly, near the end of the book the authors basically say the readers should decide whether to follow laws they consider burdensome or just ignore them. This is dangerous territory. Nobody likes it when the rich and powerful ignore laws they don't like, so why is it good when laws are ignored by those of us with more limited means?I know that sounds like a lot to complain about, but the book is so long and many portions so useful that I feel these issues warrant only a drop of one star.

Permaculture is a fascinating agricultural practice that seeks to recreate the effortless efficiency and balance of natural ecosystems with human-designed systems aimed at food production. The texts in this growing genre tend to fall into two broad categories: well-intentioned but slightly loopy tomes that are equal parts landscape planning and New Age philosophy, or technical manuals that often suggest the need for a great deal of land contouring and environmental engineering in order to build your utopian homestead. Practical Permaculture strikes an excellent balance between the two by clearly introducing basic concepts and providing excellent examples but not suggesting a multitude of projects that are beyond the reach of the average gardener or homeowner. Beautifully laid out and illustrated, it makes permaculture accessible to the average person who merely wants to lessen their impact on the natural world and experience the excitement of creating a beautifully diverse polyculture rather than a sterile suburban lawn. If you have any interest in permaculture this book is a great place to start and, if we're lucky, change the world one plant guild at a time. (Read it and you'll understand the reference.)

Great short read! I usually know in the first couple of pages if I will finish a book and this one took three days. I enjoyed the questions asked and the answers given.Everything in the book leads up to the two issues tackled at the end: why crime rates dropped in the 90's and whether parents have an effect on children. He establishes his thoughts and ideas in the beginning in order to take on these controversial subjects - and he does it convincingly. No, this isn't a book on statistics (though it is) or regression analysis, and it never was meant to be. As the authors said, it's an introduction to asking questions and not accepting the norm. And to that end, it succeeds nicely.

3.5 ✨When I first started freakonomics, I could not put the book down, but once I reached approximately 60% you are finished with the book and all you are left with is articles from the author and references. So In fairness, had freakonomics not included all the articles and references, I would have rated it a 4.Some chapters, depending on the information, was more interesting than others. I found the chapter on crime rates dropping due to abortion to be particularly intriguing. They present a valuable side of an argument that I had never pondered. The chapter on how names can affect your success was also very interesting and just learning how they generate that data and how and when the names overlap. Very interesting. All in all, I would recommend this book to all my friends who appreciate random tidbits of information or who have a curiosity towards economics and how it plays a part in random parts of our world.

I’ve heard of this book for years, but never bothered to read it because I was already an economist and didn’t think I needed to read a popular summary of Steven Levitt’s work.[1] My impression was that the book summarized his work in a popular (non-academic) style that helped people understand what economists do. I though that the book was useful in this respect in helping people understand what I do. Indeed, the most common reaction I get from people when telling them that I am an economist is that they have read Freakonomics, which implies that they have at least seen some work similar to what I do at aguanomics.[2]It turns out that I was mistaken in my initial beliefs.I just read this 2004 book 2006 revision, and it's made me think a bit more about how we (economists) communicate with the general public, and I think that some ways are better than others. First, there are textbooks, which describe the tools that economists use to put their theories into practice. Many many people have told me “I didn’t learn anything in economics. All I remember was a lot of math and curves.” This depressing outcome results from lecturers who merely reproduce problems and equations on the blackboard, without helping students understand either why those theories are used or how they came to be so popular with economists.[3] Second, there are books that explain how economists think or how their thinking has evolved as they have tried to understand and summarize the people’s behaviour. These books, in my opinion, are the most interesting — and challenging — because they push people to revisit their assumptions and perspectives.[4] These are the books that I would recommend to people looking to “think like an economist” or, to be blunt, to think more accurately about how they and those around them actually behave. Third, there are books like mine [pdf] that try to explain how to improve failing policies using basic economic insights and incentives. Finally, there are books like Freakonomics that reproduce academic papers in a popular form. These books — like Economic Gangsters — give the public a limited vision of research without explaining the struggles of getting the right data or explaining the limitations of theories that are used (or not) in the final paper.Freakonomics is therefore NOT the book that I would recommend to anyone interested in (a) learning economic theory, (b) learning about how economists think, or (c) understanding the world or thinking of ways to improve it.This book with a memorable (but useless) name provides readers with just-so stories that are good for cocktail conversations but not for understanding economics.[5]For example,Legalized abortion explains the drop in crime in the US. Not only do Steve and Steve back off from the main claims of the original paper (they add other factors), but this theory has been falsified by others (see this and this). What struck me is their ongoing attempts to hold onto at least some elements in the original claim in later blog posts in what I’d call a “my-ladydoth-protest-too-much” manner.Real estate agents serve themselves better than they serve clients when selling their own homes. As a former real estate agent, I had to agree with their basic premise, but I thought their explanation too simplistic.[6] The most obvious problem is that agents have an entirely different understanding of themselves as sellers as well as of the markets. Surely that different information (and the resulting “patience” that gets them a higher price as sellers) matters?Looking over their other chapters (on cheating sumo wrestlers, drug dealers who live with their moms, the KKK as a multilevel marketing organization, etc.), I agree that the chapters are interesting and thought provoking, but they do not provide “lessons on the hidden side of everything.” Instead, they read like a series of magazine articles whose quirky “insights” might contribute to your next cocktail conversation. The authors say that they want you to ask more questions and see the world differently, but what tools have they given to you in this book?[7] I didn’t detect any reliable technique (except perhaps to collect a neat dataset and call Steve Levitt), and that’s where I was disappointed. Freakonomics does not really reveal the hidden side of everything. Indeed, it’s more likely to mislead you into thinking you’ve learned something, when you’ve only learned an interesting angle on a complex topic on which you may lack either the experience or methods needed to put it into a useful context.[8]Take their example of the “underpaid” drug dealer who they say faces a higher risk of death than someone on Death Row in Texas (and thus must be overestimating the gains from their job). Does this statistical analysis mean that those street dealers are irrational? I don’t think so. As all economics students learn, you need to look at their opportunity cost (i.e., the costs and benefits of their potential other choices). In this case, street dealers are (a) NOT condemned to death, (b) not able to find other work with their experience, and (c) not aware of their statistical mortality as much as their potential wealth. Those street runners are “taking their chances” in the same way as Americans are “living the dream,” i.e., in ignorance of reality.[9]Bottom Line: I give this book THREE STARS. Dubner and Levitt present interesting puzzles worthy of cocktail conversation, but they overstate their contributions and accuracy (“numbers don’t lie” but theory can be incomplete or just wrong). I suggest that anyone interested in understanding how economics works and applying those lessons to “the hidden side of everything” read Economics in One Lesson by Henry Hazlitt. It’s free to download and provides a really useful perspective that anyone can apply to any topic they care about.[10](1) I’ve met Steven Levitt. He's a fine person and excellent economist, but this book is too “pop” in its oversimplification of his work and hagiographic treatment of his insights. Yes, he brings interesting statistical tools to“freaky” questions, but he’s not a “rogue economist exploring the hidden side of everything.” He’s just a guy with a dataset and empirical theory who finds some strong correlations. As I explain later on, he does not deliver the last word on pretty much any topic in this book. (It's interesting to see the two authors pooh-poohing people's objections to their claims in this revised edition. I get the impression that their answer is "bestseller, bitch!" more than "hmmm..., maybe we claimed too much.") Also see note 8.(2) I wrote on the human right to water and oil and water for their Freakonomics blog.(3) I published an article [pdf] on how students don’t really understand the “downward sloping demand curve” because its form is based on advanced techniques they won’t see for a few more classes (meaning "never" for those who take one class or drop the major).(4) Of those I have reviewed, I recommend Small is Beautiful, the Calculus of Consent, the Company of Strangers, Predictably Irrational, etc.(5) "Freaky" anything sounds bad to me, and "freaky" economics -- unlike most economics -- isn't useful to most people. Even worse, there's nothing freaky to the stories in terms of the economics. I wish the authors had spent more time on the basic economics (making the book a useful learning experience) and less time defending empirical research that is interesting and provocative but not really wise.(6) I corresponded with Levitt’s co-author on my objections to their working paper back in 2005. The main one was that their analysis missed the most important point: it’s better to have an agent than not to have an agent — an obvious insight that saved me about €10,000 when I bought a flat in Amsterdam. Going further, would an agent work harder for you if their commission was a flat rate rather than a percentage of the sales price? They harp about commissions as detrimental to the client’s interest due to the small share of the additional profits an agent gains from working harder on your behalf — e.g., 3% of another $10,000 is only $300, but why would an agent work any harder on a flat-rate commission? In my experience, agents love on referrals from old clients, which may explain why they work hard "despite the weak incentives."(7) My definition of an expert is “someone who knows what’s missing.” As an example of this, I give a fourth reason why it’s NOT irrational to vote (they give three weak reasons in the blog post included in their revised edition), i.e., the benefits to an individual from study and engagement in a topic.(8) My years of experience traveling in 100+ countries leads me to respect the diversity of beliefs and institutions that result in a variety of outcomes. Most academics need to exit the Ivory Tower and hit the road more often.(9) On page 134, they write “The typical parenting expert, like experts in other fields, is prone to sound exceedingly sure of himself. An expert doesn’t so much argue the various sides of an issue as plant his flag firmly on one side. That’s because an expert whose argument reeks of restraint or nuance often doesn’t get much attention.” They need to apply the same critique to themselves. (They cite themselves in later chapters — p139 on abortion and crime — as if their earlier claims were facts.) As another example, take Dubner on page 199, who writes “that paper [on police officer counts and crime] was later disputed… a gradate student found an obvious mathematical mistake in it — but Levitt’s ingenuity was obvious.” I’m not sure I’d say the same about someone whose claims rested on logic with “obvious mathematical mistakes”!(10) Hazlitt says "the art of economics consists in looking not merely at the immediate but at the longer effects of any act or policy; it consists in tracing the consequences of that policy not merely for one group but for all groups," which he summarizes as "...and then what?" That's a good question, and it's how I can easily predict that cheap water prices will lead to failing infrastructure or water shortages, why climate change is arriving "too fast" (due to a lack of carbon taxes), and so on. I'd prefer people to ask "and then what?" more often and spend less time showing off their knowledge of cheating sumo wrestlers.

Very interesting read about everyday statistics and how they explain our motivations. The writers challenge some predictions and show us, with numbers, that what we predict may sometimes be different from what happens in actuality and how people think. It's a good insight into what motivates us into doing or not doing things. It is very well written. I got the audiobook version and it was very entertaining. I even let my kids listen to some parts of it. It's one of those books where you can start at the beginning middle or end and enjoy it every time. I bought a few copies as gifts for my kids' history teacher, math teacher, and language teacher. Also, a gift for my uncle and for one of my friends. Recommended. I think it's better than the following books but they are also entertaining.

Julian Twerski  January 11, 1969 The Pigeons of Ponzini My English teacher, Mr. Selkirk, saysI have to write something, and it has to be long, on account of the thing that happened over winter recess--which, in my opinion, doesn't amount to much. It's not like I meant for Danley to get hurt, and I don't think that what happened was one hundred percent my fault, or even a lot my fault, even though I don't deny that I was there. So I guess I deserved to get suspended like the rest of them. I mean, maybe I could've stopped it. Maybe. But now the suspension is over, and Selkirk says I've got to write something, and because he says so, my dad says so, and that's that. I know what's going on. Selkirk thinks that if I write about what happened, I'll understand what happened. Which makes no sense, if you stop and think about it, because if I don't understand what happened, how can I write about it? Besides, I've done worse, much worse, and never written a word about it, and the fact that I never wrote about it had no effect, good or bad, so writing about it or not writing about it isn't going to prove a thing. I've got a good handle on who I am, if I say so myself. Compared with most twelve-year-olds, I mean. I'm not saying that I'm done growing up. I know I've got a long way to go. Sixth grade isn't the end of the line. My dad says that when he looks back to when he was a kid, he doesn't know whether to laugh or cry. I know there's going to be a Julian Twerski in the future who's going to look back the same way and maybe shake his head. (That last sentence should make you happy, Mr. Selkirk.) But when I look back right now, I'm just saying that what happened with Danley Dimmel isn't the worst thing I've done. I'll give you a perfect example: Last year, Lonnie and I were out back in Ponzini doing nothing, just yakking it up. Now, I guess I should mention that Lonnie's my best friend. Except calling him my best friend doesn't tell how tight we are. My dad says that if Lonnie told me to jump, I'd ask, "How high?" He's being sarcastic, my dad, but he's right in a way. Because here's the thing: Lonnie wouldn't tell me to jump unless he had a good reason. So, yeah, I'd ask, "How high?" He'd ask me "How high?" too if I told him to jump. It doesn't mean a thing. I've known Lonnie since I was two and he was three, and some of the stuff that's gone on between the two of us he'd brain me if I ever wrote about, but I'm sure he'll be all right with me writing about the thing with the bird. Oh, and I should also mention that Ponzini is what we call the lot behind the old apartment building on Parsons Boulevard where Victor Ponzini lives. Why we started calling it Ponzini is another story, and it doesn't matter for the bird story. So let's just say that Lonnie was the first to call it that, and it caught on with the rest of us. But it fits. It looks like a Ponzini kind of place. If you want to picture it, picture a layer of brown dirt on a layer of gray cement about the size of a basketball court. It's got weeds growing out of it, and it's got broken glass around the edges, and it's got a half-dozen rusted-out wrecks that were once parked in the underground garage but got pushed out back when their owners skipped town. It's got rats, which should go without saying, but the rats only come out at night. In other words, it's foul and useless, kind of like Victor Ponzini, who once squealed on Lonnie for cutting class. I mean, why is that Ponzini's business? The guy's a fifth grader and nothing but a tub of lard, but at least he knows it, which is about the only thing he's got going for himself. So Lonnie and I were hanging out at the far end of Ponzini, just shooting the breeze, when I noticed that about a dozen pigeons had landed between two of the rusted-out wrecks. I nodded at the birds, and Lonnie glanced behind him, and I said, "What do you make of that?" But in the time it took for the words to come out of my mouth, another half-dozen pigeons swooped down and landed. It was crazy--like a scene from that Alfred Hitchcock movie where a million birds get together and attack a town for no reason. There was no reason for them to show up in Ponzini either. There's not a thing for them to eat. I mean, it might make sense if someone had scattered bread crumbs for them. But there was nothing. It was as if one pigeon took it into its head that the far end of Ponzini would be a good place to rest for a minute, and then the entire air force joined in. So the two of us were standing there watching, and in about a minute there were hundreds of pigeons crammed together between the two rusted-out wrecks, and the air was full of prrriiiilllrrrps--you know, that sound pigeons make. Their heads were bobbing up and down, ducking back and forth, and they were checking each other out. It was like a bird carnival. I'd never seen a thing like it.

I very much enjoyed this story, set in Queens in the '60s. Goldblatt brings my memories to life, but it's not just a nostalgia trip. It's a story that's as relevant today as it was back then. Kids don't change; peer pressure doesn't change; growing pains may be accelerated for today's kids, but they still happen for the same reasons.I rate it a four only because I don't think I could recommend it to all the tweens I know (which speaks more to the readers than the writer). Some might find it too "old fashioned," but I think a reader who is open to reading things not just set in the 21st century, supernatural or not, or in fantasy lands would enjoy it. When I was a tween in the '70s, I liked reading teen books from the 50s and 60s--out of date but good stories and a picture of a different time, like reading Little Women, but not all of my peers liked that. When I was reading, I thought some of my nieces might think the 60s setting "uncool". It's a little disconcerting that my childhood is historical fiction for today's kids, but there it is!And I enjoyed reading it. Like all good YA writing, it's just good writing. I enjoy reading a lot of today's YA fiction, and I look forward to more of Goldblatt's writing, whether YA or adult. He's a good writer, and I also recommend his novel Sloth.

Almost a coming-of-age tale, Twerp's premise is unique and interesting to this former educator. Julian is a sharp, caring 6th grader who finds himself on the wrong side of the metaphorical discipline rod way more often than he should. His misadventures, chronicled for his English teacher, include some serious and some silly pranks. Used for a class text, the bullying incident should allow for some interesting discussions. His gang of friends, the teachers at his school, and the milieux of late 1960s Queens come together in an engaging way. Julian's author makes few missteps with language and reactions of his young protagonist. I am looking forward to reading the sequel coming out in February, 2015.

I read this story to my sixth grade class and they LOVED it! They were emotionally involved with Julian and the other characters, they loved the way it was told, and wanted me to read it every day. As the person who actually read aloud, I found that I had to adjust some references for mixed company, and the discussion of Shakespeare was a bit beyond what my students cared about. Toward the ending the character became a bit fixated on the fact he was nothing but dust and the constant reference was a bit much. However, reading this book to my class was one of the best reads because it lends itself for constant teachable moments.

I really enjoyed this, it’s a simple read, but clearly defined spaces offer rich environments of the inside of a young kids psyche. I feel like the weaving individual story arch’s offer a lot of possibilities to create relationships to your own personal story. I only chose to read it to accompany a school project for my step daughter but I ended up devouring this in a day. It’s opened me up to have a conversation with my daughter to discuss a lot of topics she may not understand, more specifically the early chapters where Julian uses “Negro,” a hopefully less common word in today’s vocabulary, but not uncommon for civil rights era America. Read this, and have your kids read this, talk about it and learn from and about each other. Good stuff.

As a 30 year old teacher of HS students, have a 18month old,and teach middle school and elementary school throughout summers and time off, this is an easy read. My fav! Through a journal of a 6th grade young boy, readers can read exactly what a downtown city like boy may encounter. However, this story filled with accounts of him doing things he shouldn't do to please his peers, acting as though it's no big deal. He apologizes in the end to another young man in the end. Though the story is filled with many minor accounts of misconduct and bullying, he is never seen for who he really is. It makes me hope no student I know, or my future teenage daughter is around anyone like this.

I liked the book because it was hilarious 😂😂😂, but there were parts that were kind of gross and parts that were complicated.I would recommend this book to kids who like funny books😀😀.I chose a 4 star rating for this book because I really liked it but some parts were kind of confusing.

Mr. Selkirk, twelve-year-old Julian Twerski's teacher, said that Julian could write about his own experiences instead of doing a paper on Shakespeare. The diary format works perfectly for this book, because we get to hear about what Julian experienced and, more importantly, what he thought about it. It's the story of his progress toward being a first-rate human being, despite twelve-year-old antics that are none too appealing. The book is also a tribute to the power of writing, since Julian's insights into right and wrong come from his need to put his ideas on paper. Mr. Selkirk was one smart teacher.

My almost 9-year-old son really enjoyed this book although it is perhaps more suitable for 11 or 12 year olds due to certain themes such as girls and dating that my rising fourth grader doesn't yet get. The book does give you lots to talk about: peer pressure, friendship, etc. The story takes place in 1969, and the amount of independence kids had in those days is amazing.

#459,226 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I am astonished that this book is out of print. How can this be? Why aren't people using it as a textbook in writing, psychology, ethics and marine biology classes? Why aren't high schools and universities clamouring to have Roger Payne speak at their commencement exercises? Why isn't he being interviewed by Oprah and Good Morning America? Why isn't the name Roger Payne as familiar to us as Jacques Cousteau or Keiko the whale? Believe me, it should be.Roger Payne is a cetacean scientist - that is to say he studies whales - however that doesn't begin to tell you about what he really does or who he really is. You see, Roger Payne swims up to Right Whales and looks them in the eye. He hangs upside down next to Humpback whales in order to experience their bone shaking songs up close. He spends hundredsd of hours a year on boats watching and recording the movements, behaviors and songs of whales. Best of all, Roger Payne has stories to tell about another world that exists beyond land. He knows and can prove, for example, that Humpback whales sing. Yes sing. Not simply make sounds but create rhythm, patterns and notes in sequences that put some of our greatest composers to shame. He has stories to tell of his encounters with whales that make it abundantly clear that they think, feel and communicate. In short Roger Payne has something to teach us about our relationship to another species on this planet, and we should be listening. But if you're not the sort to read a book just because it would be good for you, read it because Payne is a fine writer whose stories are well told and fascinating, and whose scientific explanations are so clear that even the most scientifically-challenged person can follow. Read it because it will enchant you with its descriptions of whales at play and captivate you with its studies of why whales do what they do. Read it because it will challenge your mind and touch your heart. It's that good.

I recently finished Leviathan: The History of Whaling in America and really enjoyed it. Having bought this book at a library book sale a few years ago, I thought it might make an interested counterpoint to the history of whaling, and provide some scientific insights. I was partly right. Payne opens by explaining how scientists rarely get to test new theories outside of peer reviewed journals and informal conversations with colleagues - there's a reason for that. He proceeds to stumble around rather blindly with various theories neither introduced nor closed out (hence the need for an editor) then awkwardly turns the conversation without any real transition. When the conversation does turn, it's to his study of Right Whales in Patagonia, which is mostly fascinating, but becomes a chance for Payne to show off his pseudo-literary journal entries, experiences as a bad father and worse husband, along with lengthy guesstimates about whale gang rape strategy (seriously). He then turns to discussions of testicle size and a rambling discussion of the evolutionary reasons for both cheating and maintaining multiple sexual partners.Honestly, the above was where I gave up on the book - a little over halfway through. The only other book I can recall giving up on in exasperation with in the last decade was Poland, when I got bored with the political speculation of an author I otherwise appreciate for insightful historical writing. I was going to make myself finish Payne's book, but in the end could not, and it will get donated back to the library book sale - perhaps someone else will get more from it than I did. The two stars are for the information on whales (which was surprisingly limited, and the descriptions of Patagonia.

This was a marvelous read although its flaws were sometimes predictable. I will try to minimize references to the flaws because the book was generally a joy to read. Payne has spent his passion on whales and presents a treasure trove of information, about the behavior, history, plight, and politics of the great cetaceans. Where he sticks to empirical science (which fortunately is most of the book), the eminent whale biologist takes the reader along on a wonder-filled journey beneath the waves. Accounts of his personal life fit nicely with accounts of his work. The reader comes to feel that, in some sense, he knows right whales and humpbacks, and knows Mr. Payne. The insights into the psychology, economics and politics of whaling are fascinating and troubling and are issues with which more people should have some familiarity. The book is so good that I almost hate to offer any detracting comments, but in the interest of truth I must: (1.) Payne assigns a kind of well-intended and hopeful 'happy face' to zoological and marine parks. Yes, zoos and marine parks do educate the public, but that education is primarily this -- that wild animals make excellent and profitable corporate merchandise. For compelling counterpoint read Jack Turner's The Abstract Wild. (2.) Payne's metaphysical musings are too typical of a large number of biologists. Gaia is not science; it is a philosophy of aesthetics similar to aboriginal pantheism. The concept of "collectively immortal" biology presents the conclusion that, as Payne says, Life is god. It makes for a pleasant enough concept until it is subjected to critical analysis. Some priests of biology should (collectively?) think a little deeper. One needn't adopt a Star Trek religion or a form of shamanism to respect bio-diversity. Assailing Christianity because it was the claimed practice of "God fearing" and blood thirsty sea captains is as logically dubious as attacking biological science because it was the claimed practice of a Dr. Josef Mengele, is the claimed practice of the Japanese "scientific" whaling industry, and is in fact the practice of developers of biological warfare agents. The evil besetting nature is not theism, it is holy capitalism, saint self-interest, a god called greed, and hard-hearted indifference. In short, small minded selfishness. Most scientists, including Payne, are at their best when they stick with science (although the mathematical sciences have lent the world some excellent philosophers). All nay-saying aside, this is a book well worth reading.
