If you're into photography (or just a waterfall afficianado), this is a great reference for Michigan waterfalls. The waterfalls in the book are sorted by county so you can easily select waterfalls to visit in the areas you will be traveling through. There are also trail maps and extremely concise directions, although no gps coordinates. Most waterfalls have photos. They are documentation photos and not artistic photography (i.e. no silky water or exquisite lighting, etc.) but they give you the shape and surroundings of the waterfall and can definitely help you determine whether any particular waterfall is a photography prospect. This same author has a book "A Traveler's Guide to 116 Michigan Lighthouses" which is very well done and an excellent reference also. I will be using both of the books for an upcoming trip to Michigan.
We first saw this book at a friends house. We ordered it as soon as we got home and I'm so glad we did. A majority of our trip to Michigan's UP was taken directly from this book. We love to see waterfalls and this book helped us to plan which ones were worth our trouble and which ones we should pass. It gives the length of hike as well as the conditions of the path. The directions to get to the parking area, where to park, and which path to take were very clear. Private property waterfalls were also listed but were indicated clearly in the book as being on private property. Dams are listed separately at the end of each county (chapter). Some of the lighthouses in the area are also listed, but this is not a lighthouse book. If you are interested in lighthouses try: "A Traveler's Guide to 116 Michigan Lighthouses" by the same author. One of the things that we liked best about this book is that it is arranged by county. When we are looking to take a half day trip it was easy to find the waterfalls that were in that area. We could choose a county and easily plan which waterfalls to visit and in which order to make the most of our time. The pictures are wonderful also, but there is nothing like seeing for ourselves. I will recommend this book to friends that will be traveling to the UP (Upper Peninsula) in Michigan, aka: God's Country.
Good information but poor pictures in the book. Much of the same information for the UP was available in a brochure I picked up at a state park visitor center.
My family moved to Michigan's U.P. just before my 12th birthday. This opened up to me a wonderful new world of adventure in discovering waterfalls. In the process, this book became an invaluable resource for myself, and family and friends who joined me on waterfall discovery adventures. I couldn't recommend it more. The pictures are black and white, and not great, but that is not the important thing. Part of the adventure is the process of discovering something new. You won't be disappointed. And you'll come across many of the other beautiful places the U.P. has to offer in the process.
I have owned this book for a couple of years now. This is a great guide book too have with you in the car if you are up in the UP of Michigan. It tells you about big and small waterfalls. A must have if you are headed up too Northern Michigan.
I highly recommend this book! We have many visitors to the UP and this book is a great asset for day trips. It is so well organized, the maps of both the counties and the individual falls as well as the written directions are very clear. I know we'll be getting alot of use out of this book and I encourage you to buy it and see all the waterfalls for yourself!
Lots of great information and photos. Directions to sires are from the west? So sometimes not helpful. Also, there isn't a composite map of all of the sites. That would be very helpful.
Great informational book! Used this on our trip to the U.P. and discovered quite a few waterfalls we would have missed had we not gotten the book!
