This is a wonderful workbook for first-graders. We used it with our 6 y/o throughout the school year to supplement her homework. The pages are all in color and the directions and content are relevant, fun and easy to follow. Love that it had so many subjects, especially the social studies, and science (which I feel was somewhat neglected at my child's school), and the time and money sections, which are areas my child needed additional practice. All the lessons were age/grade appropriate. We purchased this workbook on Amazon at an awesome price--much cheaper than they were selling them for at our local chain retailer.
I use these workbooks to round out our homeschool learning. The kids do well with them and usually enjoy the work. Since we are relaxed/eclectic and do not use any comprehensive curriculum, the workbooks have helped me greatly in pinpointing particular areas that require further practice. They are also helpful when I'm putting together portfolios. Written work in each subject is all right there in one place, and all I have to do is tear out some good samples of each and file them with the rest of our records. We've used Pre-K through 4th grade so far, and I highly recommend the series!
Contents: Almost everything is pencil work, but there are a few pages that want crayons or colored pencils. It has more language-related work than math-related work, with a little bit of science at the end. In terms of difficulty, it feels a bit on the easy side. Maybe this is a desirable quality? Most kids who have learned how to read will be able to do most of the pages without assistance. Some pages can be completed in as little as 30 seconds, although most take a couple of minutes, and one (about the weather) is designed to be completed over the course of an entire week. You won't get the full depth and challenge of a first-grade curriculum out of this book. It is a fun supplement, not a replacement.Form: 320 pages weighs a lot. This is not a little workbook that you can spontaneously stuff in a kid's backpack as an extra way to stave off boredom while traveling. This is a substantial book.
Started this book as a supplement to my sons homeschool of Explode the Code and Singapore math. The pages are eye candy. Nice and colorful. There are some fun worksheets in this book. He seems to enjoy doing it everyday. There are some pages that are harder than others. Overall though we are doing a page a day and this is one of two things that he does that I have never gotten pushback on. So overall I would say this is a good book. The pages are perforated so they are easy to tear out.
Ive tired numerous books trying to find the perfect workbook for my daughter that would review things she has learned while introducing new things she'll learn all while being fun. Brain Quest does just that. Some subjects are more of a review for her like the phonics an others are new to her like the time and money subject. They're 11 subjects: phonics, spelling and vocabulary, language arts, sequenceing and sorting, math skills, adding and subtracting, shapes and measurement, time and money, social studies and science. We do about 6 subjects and four pages in each subject a day. The subjects are color coded and the pages are very engaging and colorful. My daughter will start 1st grade this fall and this has been a great study aid during the summer along with her leapreader. We will continue using this book during the school year. For weekend study or during the week when she doesn't have homework.
I bought this book given the great reviews but am truly disappointed. I would say my child's learning is average for her age (6) and yet she is completing chapters within one sitting because she finds the lessons to be so simple. Tonight she actually asked me why I bought her such an easy workbook, because these were basic learnings from kindergarten! I wish I was able to view more pages in person to make a better assessment before my purchase. I'm going to be looking for a different workbook unfortunately as this has turned out to be a waste of money.
This workbook is a great way to help kids learn new items and practice ones they already know. My only criticism of this item would be that each subject has it's own chapter. My child doesn't want to work on the same thing the entire chapter. Mixing the items in levels or chapters would keep small children better engaged. This is very well made, pages tear out easily, perfect for this grade level. Highly recommended.
First let me say I love BrainQuest books & flash cards, etc, We enjoy them as an "extra" in our homeschool world. We have used lots of other brands of workbooks, but to be honest, the kids like these as much as i do, I like the "brain box" that teaches them the "rules" of quotation marks in english *(for example) or reminding them how their math facts help them in moving from multiplication to division (for the older kiddos) Basically they reinforce what we have already learned, they love completing the sections, the bright colors and simple instructions seem to be key, its a workbook that they like doing, often asking to do it to replace their other handwriting or lesson, that says a lot to me about their appeal to kiddos.
I bought this workbook for my daughter to use during the summer between her kindergarten and first grade years. She already knew how to do most things in the book, but it was challenging enough that she was getting practice. The activities went hand in hand with the things and methods she was learning in school. I will probably continue to get the books for each grade during the summers. I would highly recommend this for families who feel their child needs a little extra support in their current learning, or for keeping them on track during breaks.
