The information wasn't up to date. Prices had increased significantly, the museum pass was available at different locations and we ended up on a wild goose chase to obtain it, and the public transportation was much more widely available than the book suggested. In particular, ferry trips on the Bosphorus and to the Asian side, and travel to other places in Turkey, were much easier to arrange and schedule than the book suggested. I've had great experience with Lonely Planet in the past, but this book was a dud. We wasted a lot of time and missed out on some opportunities because we didn't know where to look.
I have purchased over 25 LP books for international travel over the years, but this is the first city-specific guide I've used. The book is logically organized by neighborhood and covers the sights in great detail. We had no problem prioritizing the sights to see based on the descriptions and locations. In the front of each neighborhood section there's a 2-3 hour walking itinerary which I found very helpful.
I might start by admitting that I'm cheap (but please read on before you discount my opinion as just someone who wanted something for nothing). I'm cheap. And so when I recently travelled on vacation from Los Angeles to Istanbul I bought a minimal number of text messages and voice minutes from my mobile provider as a 'just in case'.Seeing as how I wasn't going to have Google Maps at the touch of a button on my mobile, I opted to purchase the Lonely Planet Istanbul Guide Book to use with my Kindle (which I feel at least partially disguise myself as a tourist since it wasn't obvious that I was looking at a travel guide).The guidebook is very well laid-out with chapters devoted to each major area of the city. Each chapter has a nice selection of the big sites that you shouldn't miss, a list of restaurants/bars/clubs that the author recommends and a map. Further, many of the big sites have small guides of their own to help you navigate them and draw your attention to some of their more interesting aspects.From a planning perspective, I thought the book was very useful. Each night (or early morning since I never could quite get the hang of adjusting my sleep schedule) I would read about the area of the city I would visit next, lay out a plan on which sites I would see and then read about what made those site particularly significant. I would look through the restaurant recommendations and pick a few that seemed most appealing and then fall asleep (Or head out for those instances when I couldn't sleep).It was then that my enchantment with the book really fell to pieces. I didn't find the book to be very clear with how to traverse from one part of the city to the other and the maps were utterly useless. The maps in particular were one of my least favorite parts of the book. Restaurants were scattered amongst streets that weren't labeled, the restaurants that had earned special mention in the text were no where to be found and often the description of where places were located were so poor that I often never found them. Restaurant's names in the book were different than the restaurant's name on the building .. it was a mess.While I wish I could say you could chalk up my disdain for the maps on my poor navigation skills, I really don't think that was the case. I think an extra line or two about restaurant locations, better labeling and updating the venue names would have been a huge help and avoided me being so often frustrated with the book.Honestly, I told my partner at one point that if the book wasn't on my Kindle that I would hurl it into the river.To conclude, if you're traveling with a data plan, this book would be excellent for you. If you're not, I really would recommend looking elsewhere for help.
I have used their guides in the past and rely on them for trip planning. So far I am still in the planning stage and this publication is proving helpful.
Makes me want to go for an even longer time!
This is a really handy book with lots of good advice about places to go/things to do in Istanbul. It loses a star for the poor organization of the Kindle book, but it was definitely really helpful and interesting when travelling in Istanbul.
Used it everyday.
Excelent descriptions of the city, recommendations of restaurants, hints and tips!
