This book is well organized with beautiful photography and provides a complete reference guide for novices or experienced herbalists in identifying, collecting, and processing the plants that surround us. I loved the emphasis on ethical harvesting, and respecting and honoring plants. Interesting "back stories" on historical uses and folklore add to the mix. I'm excited to put some of the concepts into practice in making teas and tinctures.

This is a great book to introduce you to foraging and making herbal remedies. I have some novice foraging and intermediate remedy making knowledge and I learned a lot. Things about harvesting techniques and tools that I wasn’t familiar with and new to me recipes. It includes a good reference guide to specific plants mentioned in each chapter. This will definitely hold a place on my remedies bookshelf.

A great book introducing people to herbalism, it’s benefits, and tips and techniques for making your own herbal remedies. Recipes covering a variety of ailments or to support general health are easy to make with step by step instructions and pics. Abby keeps things simple and starts the reader off with a few plants to get acquainted with so as to not overwhelm.

Not only were these not easy enough for a kid, I tried to figure out any of them after my 9 year old gave up and they were nothing but confusing. I showed it to several other adults just to confirm I'm not an idiot. Terribly written book with nearly impossible to follow tricks. Do not buy, waste of money and a waste of paper.

To much reading for children. Not what I wanted for a nine year old.

Actually, a little hard for ME, the adult to understand, but I am a complete beginner. This is good for your brain. And your dexterity. And your showmanship skills. Thrill the little kids with this, those who are 8+ yrs old - if younger, magic does not surprise them.

This book has about 2-3 decent card tricks in it. I do Not recommend it... for children, babies, adults, or pets. Haha

No colored pictures, lots of words. My child was bored with it.

This book was purchased for one of my students at school as a reward when he does well in specific lessons. He loves the reward of looking through the book and picking up a card trick to try.

My grandson recently discovered magic tricks using cards. I purchased this book so he could learn more tricks and he has been very pleased with the tricks in this book.

President Reagan made notations in his diary every single day of his presidency, except perhaps for those days when he was hospitalized after being shot. He used writing to organize his thoughts and even wrote or edited most of his speeches. His true nature is revealed through his diary entries. He was not an intellectual giant, but he was a charismatic leader and a great orator. He brought people together and worked toward compromises and agreements. For instance, he will always be associated with tearing down the Berlin Wall.The book is quite long - nearly 800 pages in the printed version, and requiring more than 10 hours to read in the Kindle version. Brinkley, the editor, painstakingly retained Reagan's original words, spelling errors and all, though chose to summarize a significant portion of the diary (probably 50%), rather than include a word-for-word rendition. The summarized info is shown in italics. Classified info has also been redacted (shown with square brackets in the text). I started off carefully reading every word, but by about half way through the book, I thought I'd never finish so decided to just skim the italicized text.This is not an autobiography. There is no historical analysis, no retelling of historic events, no summarization of the issues of the day. For instance, though the Iran-Contra affair is mentioned many, many times, you won't be able to piece together what actually happened by reading the diary entries. Perhaps Reagan was not a deep or introspective thinker, or perhaps he just knew that his diaries would become public at some point, and didn't want to get too personal.Here are some of my observations from the diary:He had a modest ego. Even the "Tear Down This Wall" speech in Berlin in 1987 is somewhat downplayed, though he did mention that the speech was warmly received.He had little respect for the press and believed they manipulated situations and chose what news to present; there are quite a few negative comments about Sam Donaldson in particular.He had a contentious relationship with Tip O'Neill.His devotion to Nancy was legendary and he mentioned her absence with longing every time she had to be away from him. He was proud of her work on the "Just Say No" campaign.He hobnobbed with the rich and famous, particularly Hollywood types.He loved to watch movies, even the oldies but goodies. He didn't care for R rated or smutty movies though.He didn't use swear words. He writes d--n and h--l in his diary, and never a mention of the F word at all.He was sensitive and touched by many of the people that he met with hardships, frequently commenting that he "puddled up".He made friends with some of the most important global figures of the day - Gorbachev, Margaret Thatcher, Mother Theresa.His main form of recreation was horseback riding and cutting down trees.He was inordinately proud of his physical condition, always reporting that he got a good report from his many physical exams. In Chapter 4 he wrote "I'm so healthy I had a hard time not acting smug."He was very concerned about his approval rating, and mentioned it frequently; though he wasn't always rated highly, his final polls in office gave him the highest rating of any president ever.He was photographed thousands of times while in office; "photo op" is probably the most commonly recurring appointment on his calendarHe never did learn how to spell Gadaffi (leader of Libya); Quadhafy, Quadafy, Kadhafy, Qaddafi, Quadaffi, Quadafi were some of his attempts.He made history for 8 years, and strolling through his diary is a great reminder of the world changing events of the 1980's. On his last night in office he wrote "Tomorrow I stop being President." There's no way to know from his diary whether he was sad, excited or relieved at the end of his historic term in office. However, reading his diaries motivates me to look for a biography to fill in where his diary leaves off.

This is a book where 99.9% of the words are directly from Reagan himself, so there is no political slant beyond his own. Whether you love him or hate him, you'll find what you're looking for here.The biggest downside is that the editor (and the author [Reagan] as well), doesn't elaborate on what Reagan is saying, so if you're like me and you were young during the events of the early 1980's, you'll have a hard time matching what was written with what was happening in the world at the time.

The Reagan Diaries aren't something you read through from start to finish, but I pick it up often and just read a few pages. Or I might want to know about a specific entry and flip to that page.The Reagan Diaries is a really intimate, personal look into Reagan's eight years as president of the United States. We get to see, in his own words, what his daily life as president was like, including how he felt about certain issues.If you want to learn more about Reagan's life and political career, then The Reagan Diaries is an essential part of your book collection.

I purchased this book as a gift for my mother on mother's day. The hardcover edition is beautifully bound, and would make a great edition to any reader's shelf. My mother, who is fond of history, reading, and of course Ronald Reagan, has enjoyed sifting through the book. I personally find it would be difficult to read straight through the entire book, as some of Reagan's entrees are quite mundane. Despite this, I think readers will find some words of wisdom and may gain insight into the office of president.The part I most enjoyed while looking through the book are the pictures that capture the most memorable moments of Reagan's presidency. The only complaint I have is the packaging the book arrived in. It was simply covered in a cardboard sort of wrap, resulting in a small scuff on the bottom corner when I received it.

This book depicted who I believe is the real Ronald Reagan. He was smart, compassionate, tough when needed and he read people very well. He truly adored his wife and loved the United States of America. His messages proved him to be a good friend and showed his great respect for those who deserved respect. This book was also a good review of our recent history. Well done.

It shows that Ronald Reagan had old fashioned and refreshing values. We will not see the likes of him again. I really enjoyed this book and could not put it down.

I always respected his decisions, as President, but I also was so impressed with his great love of his wife Nancy and how he almost always commented as to how much he missed her when she was away on travel or business . Depending on your own personality, Tristan Gooley is either the world’s most interesting hiking partner…or…you will want to kill him within five minutes of getting out of the car. The man knows a lot about most aspects of nature, is quite observant, and loves to share his knowledge. If you feel that is enjoyable, you will like this book.=== The Good Stuff ===* Gooley has hiked in many locations throughout the world, including many in the US, Britain, Asia and Africa. He makes detailed observations, and shares both his insights and his methods for making those determinations. His wisdom includes traditional book knowledge, lessons and lore passed on from the natives, and common sense deduction. It is a remarkable tour de force of botany, biology, geology and astronomy.* While the author spends a lot of time on specific observations, the real lesson of the book is how to develop an attitude of curiosity. While many of us might see “just a tree”, Gooley sees a navigational aid, a history of the area, and clues about the local topography, climate and civilization. While these insights can span the range from useful through trivial and even go all the way to arcane, they do serve as a motivation to make your own observations and deductions. It is sort of a cross between John Muir and Sherlock Holmes.* There are a few useful gems for just about anyone. Even city dwellers will find some enjoyment in Gooley’s astronomy observations, and while much of his hiking experience is in Britain, he also discusses the flora and fauna of many parts of the United States.* Some of the best parts of the book were the time spent with “exotic” cultures. For example, from spending time on Borneo, we find the natives use some very remarkable means of navigation, and prefer to think of “upstream and downstream” rather than the Western concepts of “east and west”.=== The Not-So-Good Stuff ===* I was expecting more of a practical “how-to”, but the book is more of a motivational lecture on letting your own knowledge and observations run wild. For example, there are a number of tips for determining direction. There is the familiar “moss on the north side of trees”, rule, but there are seemingly hundreds of other techniques of direction finding. More than you could possibly remember, and indeed, more than I was interested in.* Gooley has a habit of referring to plants by their common name. This can be a little problematic, since the US and Britain can not even agree on what “corn” means. I would have preferred plants be referenced also by their Latin names to avoid any confusion.* Many of the observations become almost overwhelming and frustrating. The author has spent time with some very interesting cultures, and I would have liked to see more information on some of their novel technologies (such as the upstream/downstream navigation previously mentioned) rather than more mundane trivia.=== Summary ===If you are expecting a “Fieldbook”, I think you will be somewhat disappointed in this work. While there are numerous “tricks” for getting information about your environment, they are not organized in any way to reference them other than your memory. Rather, the book is more of a motivational guide to learning to trust your instincts and observations about your environment. It wasn't what I expected, I thought the book was going to be more in easy to read tips and other information on Reading Nature's signs. I wasn't expecting to read about the author's life experiences. I found it to be boring.

I originally got this book out of the library, but it was so good and was packed with so much information that I bought a copy. In it he describes all kinds of fascinating clues you can observe in the world around you (both in nature and in towns) that lead to interesting deductions. He describes how to find North based on all kinds of different plants, how to understand animal and human footprints, how to read the stars, how to easily calculate the phase of the moon at any future or past date, how to understand development patterns in a city, and on and on. Tristan clearly has gotten plenty of 'dirt time' to refine his observations - this isn't an armchair guy who has just brought together a lot of ideas originally developed by other people.This book has transformed the way I view the world while out in nature.

I had read about Mr. Gooley’s courses on Natural Navigation some years ago in the Reader’s Digest I believe. At that time, I was fascinated becau7se he claimed to be able to use natural navigation in cities too. I do not live in the UK and consequently did not have easy access to the course or his teaching. I was thrilled to discover that he had put his discoveries into a book.I am one of those people who learn by reading. Yes, a picture is worth a thousand words but there are times when words are crucial. I had thought the book to be full of pictures without much context. I could not have been more wrong.Mr. Gooley starts with a masterful introduction about determining weather with the backdrop of a beech and an amorous couple. He explains about distances, the wind and clouds before segwaying into his subject. This is not a universal book. The author is clear about the geographies in which the material in the book is applicable.The book is split into several chapters; each chapter deals with a specific aspect of natural navigation. There are chapters on trees and plants, the landscape, the wind and many more, each dealing with how to use that attribute for finding your way. Yes, he does bring them all together. For those who like checklists, there are plenty of those as well. One of the most fascinating portions of the book is when he describes his walk with the Dayak. However, I wish there had been more detail. For example, how did they get away from the bees in the forest?This book is a must read for educators, math teachers and geography teachers because it illustrates how these subjects should be taught. It is much easier to understand the Pythagoras theorem by its application in crossing a river and calculating heights and distances rather than those proofs and out of context problems that students are made to solve at least when studying in India.Over all, a great read and a reference book I will return to frequently.

I bought this book because I have a horrible sense of direction. What turned out to be fun was using some of the new learned skills with my grand daughter. We used a cell phone app to check our assumptions about directors and took photos of interesting finds on walks.
