I am astonished that this book is out of print. How can this be? Why aren't people using it as a textbook in writing, psychology, ethics and marine biology classes? Why aren't high schools and universities clamouring to have Roger Payne speak at their commencement exercises? Why isn't he being interviewed by Oprah and Good Morning America? Why isn't the name Roger Payne as familiar to us as Jacques Cousteau or Keiko the whale? Believe me, it should be.Roger Payne is a cetacean scientist - that is to say he studies whales - however that doesn't begin to tell you about what he really does or who he really is. You see, Roger Payne swims up to Right Whales and looks them in the eye. He hangs upside down next to Humpback whales in order to experience their bone shaking songs up close. He spends hundredsd of hours a year on boats watching and recording the movements, behaviors and songs of whales. Best of all, Roger Payne has stories to tell about another world that exists beyond land. He knows and can prove, for example, that Humpback whales sing. Yes sing. Not simply make sounds but create rhythm, patterns and notes in sequences that put some of our greatest composers to shame. He has stories to tell of his encounters with whales that make it abundantly clear that they think, feel and communicate. In short Roger Payne has something to teach us about our relationship to another species on this planet, and we should be listening.But if you're not the sort to read a book just because it would be good for you, read it because Payne is a fine writer whose stories are well told and fascinating, and whose scientific explanations are so clear that even the most scientifically-challenged person can follow. Read it because it will enchant you with its descriptions of whales at play and captivate you with its studies of why whales do what they do. Read it because it will challenge your mind and touch your heart. It's that good.

I recently finished Leviathan: The History of Whaling in America and really enjoyed it. Having bought this book at a library book sale a few years ago, I thought it might make an interested counterpoint to the history of whaling, and provide some scientific insights. I was partly right. Payne opens by explaining how scientists rarely get to test new theories outside of peer reviewed journals and informal conversations with colleagues - there's a reason for that. He proceeds to stumble around rather blindly with various theories neither introduced nor closed out (hence the need for an editor) then awkwardly turns the conversation without any real transition.When the conversation does turn, it's to his study of Right Whales in Patagonia, which is mostly fascinating, but becomes a chance for Payne to show off his pseudo-literary journal entries, experiences as a bad father and worse husband, along with lengthy guesstimates about whale gang rape strategy (seriously). He then turns to discussions of testicle size and a rambling discussion of the evolutionary reasons for both cheating and maintaining multiple sexual partners.Honestly, the above was where I gave up on the book - a little over halfway through. The only other book I can recall giving up on in exasperation with in the last decade was Poland, when I got bored with the political speculation of an author I otherwise appreciate for insightful historical writing. I was going to make myself finish Payne's book, but in the end could not, and it will get donated back to the library book sale - perhaps someone else will get more from it than I did. The two stars are for the information on whales (which was surprisingly limited, and the descriptions of Patagonia.

This was a marvelous read although its flaws were sometimes predictable. I will try to minimize references to the flaws because the book was generally a joy to read. Payne has spent his passion on whales and presents a treasure trove of information, about the behavior, history, plight, and politics of the great cetaceans. Where he sticks to empirical science (which fortunately is most of the book), the eminent whale biologist takes the reader along on a wonder-filled journey beneath the waves. Accounts of his personal life fit nicely with accounts of his work. The reader comes to feel that, in some sense, he knows right whales and humpbacks, and knows Mr. Payne. The insights into the psychology, economics and politics of whaling are fascinating and troubling and are issues with which more people should have some familiarity.The book is so good that I almost hate to offer any detracting comments, but in the interest of truth I must: (1.) Payne assigns a kind of well-intended and hopeful 'happy face' to zoological and marine parks. Yes, zoos and marine parks do educate the public, but that education is primarily this -- that wild animals make excellent and profitable corporate merchandise. For compelling counterpoint read Jack Turner's The Abstract Wild. (2.) Payne's metaphysical musings are too typical of a large number of biologists. Gaia is not science; it is a philosophy of aesthetics similar to aboriginal pantheism. The concept of "collectively immortal" biology presents the conclusion that, as Payne says, Life is god. It makes for a pleasant enough concept until it is subjected to critical analysis. Some priests of biology should (collectively?) think a little deeper. One needn't adopt a Star Trek religion or a form of shamanism to respect bio-diversity. Assailing Christianity because it was the claimed practice of "God fearing" and blood thirsty sea captains is as logically dubious as attacking biological science because it was the claimed practice of a Dr. Josef Mengele, is the claimed practice of the Japanese "scientific" whaling industry, and is in fact the practice of developers of biological warfare agents. The evil besetting nature is not theism, it is holy capitalism, saint self-interest, a god called greed, and hard-hearted indifference. In short, small minded selfishness. Most scientists, including Payne, are at their best when they stick with science (although the mathematical sciences have lent the world some excellent philosophers).All nay-saying aside, this is a book well worth reading.

Covers a long period of time. The alphabetical listing made for a lack of continuity and historical perspective. I would have preferred a chronological approach. I did like that the sources were well documented through out.

This is the first time I have seen a summary of Roman battles. It was easy to navigate and the summaries of the battles gives one enough info to understand what happened.

The book does what it says. The only problem is that in some cases numbers are lacking. Good reference book.

An excellent book about Roman warfare. Done on alphabetical order by battle name. Woujld have been nice if it had been done by year, but that is no big deal.

Very nice read with plenty of details.

I disliked the structure of this book. By arranging the battles alphabetically, continuity of history and development of organisation, weapons, strategy and tactics was lost. Almost every battle had to be introduced by a brief explanation of the context, which became repetitious.

Don Taylor has produced a handsome volume on the battles of the Roman Empire. While the book does provide some introductory material on the Roman army and the ancient and early medieval sources about this period, it is predominantly a list of battles with brief descriptions, some tactical maps, and lists of ancient sources for each battle. The latter is the best part and it is what sets this work apart from similar battle books, which merely provide descriptions and maps (e.g., An Encyclopedia of Battles: Accounts of Over 1,560 Battles from 1479 B.C. to the Present (Dover Military History, Weapons, Armor)). In addition, Taylor has provided a survey of the ancient authors with information on how readers can obtain translated copies (26-36). This is more helpful than Cambridge’s The Cambridge History of Greek and Roman Warfare (Volume 2), which provides its own list of ancient authors (485-497), but does not provide details on finding them in English.As for the scope, Taylor covers battles from Actium (31 BC) through the reign of Justinian I (d. 565 AD). The battles are arranged alphabetically, but Taylor has thankfully provided a chronological list as well (42-45).Taylor is upfront about the limitations of his book. He wanted to let the ancient authors speak for themselves, so he only derives his descriptions from them. That also means that he provides no analysis nor does reference any modern works that focus on the battles. Thus, students seeking the oldest texts possible with benefit, but they will need to do the groundwork to construct any historiography of the battles. In addition, Taylor has omitted battles that lack any recognizable name or place, as well as most sieges.One frustrating, but easily forgivable aspect is that his narratives are not clear in how he reconciled any differences among the ancient accounts. If we take Adrianople (378 AD), a very popular battle, Taylor provides a 1-page narrative along with a tactical map (51-53). At the end, he cites 7 different ancient authors who described the battle. However, it is not clear how Taylor decided to interpret or even merge these accounts. For example, Taylor tells us that 20,000 Romans died in the battle, but he doesn’t explain that this is a modern estimate based on Ammianus Marcellinus’s list of units. Thus, the reader will need to track down the sources and derive their own conclusions. This is partially what Taylor wants to provide and encourage—a starting point—but I would have loved to seen his own thought process, his analysis.With more than 25 years as professor of European and Ancient History at Hardin Simmons University in Texas, I believe Taylor has much more to tell us about these battles. Still, undergrads and even grads will find Roman Empire at War immensely useful when beginning research of battles of the Roman Empire.

If you are like me and had to use a Scanning Electron Microscope or SEM, you want to start with the basics that everyone goes by. This book is a safe bet that most everyone knows about. Plus, it is written with very little background in the world of electron microscopy. Too many authors to list but it's wonderful that alot of experts got together to present this material in clear, concise manner. Before you grab your solid-state physics book or check Wikipedia, just relax and page through it since this book pretty much makes it easy for you.Chapters are arranged by the following: What is SEM?, How SEM works?, and Why are we interested with SEM? That's the easiest way to explain rather than list all the chapters. If you have a specific question, you don't even have to read through the previous chapters (if you have rough understanding). The size of this book is a BIG PLUS. It's compact compared to the monsterous Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) book by Barry Carter which is another great reference. For this price, you would be lucky to find another good reference book under $100 with such relevant information.

I had to purchase this text for my EM class in undergrad and it was a wealth of information! This text was clear and concise with the content and topics were easily found and referenced. I could you use text for both exploratory information and also trouble-shooting imaging issues and queries.

I'm reading this book and an older edition of the Reimer text for in independent study course in SEM. While I'm only three chapters into both texts, the Goldstein text seems more readable. I like the writing style, and it doesn't seem to sacrifice in any technical aspect.It is also very well illustrated. For a book about an imaging technology, this is obviously quite important. There are many instances where there are sets of images to compare the results achieved with varied operating parameters.The text is well organized. It begins with an assumption that you know some basic physics and chemistry, but doesn't require any background in microscopy. Both the Table of Contents and Index are detailed enough to enable specific searches for specific subject matter.This is a textbook I look forward to reading in the evening, and one that I look forward to finishing. It matches very well with the practical work I'm doing on the SEM.

This is the bible of SEM.I just started working in a SEM lab and wanted to know more of the technical science behind it. My co-worker, who has been doing SEM for ~5 years recommend the book to me.This book has greatly exceeded my expectations and has impressed me with the technical content.Worth the $$$.
