I’m a big fan of Clinton Kelly and since “The Chew†was cancelled, I wanted to buy more of his wonderful books. “Freakin’ Fabulous†is a fun adventure into the chapters of Dress, Speak, Behave, Eat, Drink, Entertain and Decorate. Clinton gives us some great advice, he shares delicious recipes and he shows us a good time along the way. This seller sent my book out to me quickly and the book is in perfect condition.
Clinton Kelly is hilarious and makes fabulousness accessible to everyone. Broken into 7 sections representing 7 areas of life, Clinton writes like he's in your living room chatting over his favorite gin and tonic. My favorite section is "How to Dress." Major body types of both women and men are given advice on how to dress to flatter your figure. "How to Speak" is wildly entertaining. If I could only teach my English classes like this, my students would learn proper grammar so much easier! He gives these hilarious situations and addresses the most important grammar rules and/or biggest grammar slips so that any one can sound classy and educated. The 3rd section, "How to Behave" is also helpful. It's like a miniature Emily Post book for modern day life. Useful.Sections 4-6 are how to eat, drink, and entertain. They kind of all go together and will help the average Joe or Jill be a stylish and hospitable hostess.The last section, section 7 is about decorating. I probably paid the least attention to this section as I already own tons of decorating books and magazines. However, Clinton does have helpful information and pretty visuals to look at in this section.Overall, fabulous! Fun to read- even my husband picked it up a few times (busted!).
I've never seen What Not to Wear, but based on this book, I may look for it. Clinton Kelly is a talented writer -- informative and funny at the same time. Seven chapters cover how to dress, speak, behave, eat, drink, entertain and decorate, and the principles are cleverly discussed and humorously shown, though the language may be offensive to some. In the Dress chapter, Kelly uses effective photographs to illustrate his points. I was pleasantly surprised at some of the content -- basic instructions on grammar (such as the difference between 'who' and 'whom'), manners (what to do with your napkin when you leave the table), decorating and throwing a party, from what to do with guests who arrive early to getting guests to leave. The examples and illustrations are funny and irreverent, but also quite effective. All the while, Kelly is funny and charming. In addition there are quite a few hors d'oeuvres recipes, a few essential recipes (such as roast chicken), and drink mix information (as well as several pages devoted to wine).This is, of course, a fabulous book. But it would have been improved with an index at the back.
Mr. Kelly is not only fabulous, he is a hoot. This is a fun read, but more importantly it contains a lot of useful information for men and for women. It is pretty direct and doesn't waste time with unnecessary distractions.There's little in this book that I can find fault with, but I don't agree with everything.The book would be improved if it contained chapters on how to build a basic wardrobe for both men and women. But this book covers topics that are wide ranging, from: how to eat a table with others, how to speak about people effectively, and other miscellaneous topics.I'm glad I read this book.
I like this book. Good sense & I picked up a few new tips along the way. Non-drinkers will probably be bored by the "how to mix drinks" part -- but all the rest is totally worth it. You just can't help liking author Clinton Kelly. There are a couple of understories here -- one about how a kid who knew he was different from his peers from the get-go (he spent time in playgroup as a child advising the host mother that she needed to add "finely minced celery" to her deviled eggs -- who does that?) and is able to parlay it into a career that plays to his strong gifts and talents -- and provide a wonderful service and sense of elan to the style-challenged. Kelly has an old-fashioned, slightly old-world take on things -- manners, dress, deportment. He is keeping the wisdom of the ages (think Coco Chanel, Grace Kelly, and Ralph) alive for a new generation in a gentle, playful, and compassionate way. And who wouldn't agree with advice like "Every car trip goes faster if you sing." Recommend.
Freakin' Fabulous is still fabulous ten years after publication -- not a single suggestion or visual out of date. It's well thought out, beautifully laid out, colorful, educational, and really funny -- like icing on any cake you get your graduate -- he or she will love it!
I read the reviews before I bought the book and now I'm re-reading them. I have to give this full stars because it was just so much fun to read. And not only fun, but full of spot-on good advice. One of you mentioned putting it your guest room. What a great idea. This book is like what I image spending a weekend with Clinton would be like: Fun, fast paced, chatty and gossiping the entire time. For those of you who got all stuffy about some of the pictures. Come on, this book is by an adult who lives in the real world, written for adults who do the same. Lighten UP. Enjoy the book. Be prepared to laugh out loud at his observations and above all have a good time turning the pages.
Not only does this book have many different suggestions on how to create your personal style, it is very entertaining! My least favorite part was "How to Speak" and my favorite part was "How to Decorate". Also, the recipes from "Big Daddy" (just get the book already...) and friends are very appealing. I am currently trying to re-decorate my rental house and it is proving to be a challenge. Thanks Clinton for your helpful advice! I would recommend this to anyone who needs a little spark of creativity in their life.
