I loved this book! It is a moving and inspiring story of a very special Carmelite Sister who risked so much to escape persecution in Mexico and how her faith sustained her. This story is beautifully written and is so interesting and hard to put down. I loved learning more about the history of how the Carmelite Order in Alhambra was founded. This story of Mother Luisita takes you away from the seeming craziness of our modern world and offers a fresh, true, and simple spiritual perspective into our own lives. I highly recommend this book!

Just started reading but so far it's beautifully written about one of the most amazing Catholic women of our time.

Mother Luisita was hailed as a humble, pious and courageous leader of a Carmelite community in Mexico. During the Cristiada war of the 1920s, they were targeted by the Mexican government in order to suppress the voice of the Catholic Church, but Mother Luisita would not be stopped. Taking a leap of faith she embarks upon a perilous journey as a refugee to the U.S. to save her community.This is a story rich in detail, historical facts and authenticity. Sr. Timothy Marie did an amazing job interweaving the history of the Cristiada war with the words of Mother Luisita's personal letters and other documented oral history. Mother Luisita was a Saint among those she served--a story worth reading and a testament to her faith in God. Her legacy lives on through the Carmelite Sisters of the Most Sacred Heart of Los Angeles.

I loved this book! It was an easy read. I could not put this book down. The chapters are short enough to keep you engaged to find out what happens next in the life of this beautiful Foundress of a religious order in Los Angeles and the great example of total trust and faith in the midst of danger and uncertainties as a refugee from her beloved country. How can we gain this faith and total surrender to God? Read this book and Venerable Mother Luisita's and her sisters' example will teach you. Thank you, Sr.Timothy, for writing this book.

This beautifully written book which captures not only the spiritual but the adventure filled story of Venerable Mother Luisita, a widow and foundress of a Carmelite congregation, is a must read, not only for those interested in Catholic church history but for those interested in early 20th century Mexican history. The martyrs and those who survived the Mexican Revolution are portrayed in the microcosm of Mother Luisita and her Carmelite companions who braved the specter of imminent torture and death for the exercise of their Catholic faith. This true and compelling story provides us with an insight into the sufferings of the church in Mexico during those tragic years of which many modern Americans are unaware. The book aptly titled "In The Face of Darkness", describes the faith and total abandonment to God's will of Mother Luisita as she led her Carmelite companions into forced exile in the United States. The reader will not want to put this compelling book down.

When I was a kid, I started reading Robert A. Heinlein's wonderful science fiction stories. I don't know how much the themes of the books shaped me, but I know they helped me gain and maintain an interest in science and technology. He's a great story-teller, certainly one of the best, sci-fi or otherwise. His later books became much less appealing as he turned to a more adult audience. (As I remember one relative saying, RAH became a dirty old man.) Even though many of his novels are purportedly for young readers (teens, not little kids), their appeal holds at least for this middle-aged reader. The first RAH book I read was Tunnel in the Sky, when I was probably 10 or 12. Elliot is 11, so I thought I'd read it again and see if I still like it enough to pass it on. I do!Rod Walker will be graduating from high school soon, but first he has to pass the final exam in survival class. On test day, he and his classmates will be deposited in an isolated area and will be expected to use the course's lessons and their limited equipment to survive, whatever the climate or surroundings. They'll get to the mysterious destination via a planetary gates, a sort of portal through which on can simply walk from one place to another, whether across the continent or across the galaxy. RAH does spend some time on the physics and discovery of the gates. That's a real strength of his: even when he introduces seemingly fanciful technologies, he provides a scientific rational or foundation, making it almost believable.The survival test starts out as expected, but when there's no gate at the appointed coordinates in the appointed time frame, Rod and his classmates realize they may be stuck for good, wherever in the universe they may be. Like the English schoolboys in The Lord of the Flies, the kids have to figure out how to create a society together. Rather than let themselves fall into chaos, the kids in The Tunnel in the Sky are determined to maintain civility--and civilization. It was refreshing to see that when these older teenagers wanted to have sex and live together, they actually had the "mayor" perform a wedding. And cursing was strictly prohibited, in order to retain decorum.Once they got through the gate to the new planet, Tunnel became not so much sci-fi as classic teen survival literature like The Cay, Hatchet, or Lord of the Flies. I love the message of the need for an ordered society, self-reliance and cooperation. The kids' experiments in self-governance are instructive and present the question, how would we structure society if the slate was wiped clean and we were starting fresh on a new planet?

This is one of Heinlein's best books. Written for teens (when my son read it about age 13 he thought it was one of the best books he'd ever read) but adult readers can enjoy the story very much. The story focuses on the usual Heinlein teenager, in this case Rod Walker, who is a callow, All-American youth who wants adventure and gets it. He and a group of students are sent through a wormhole portal to another world to complete their survival-school training. When they find themselves stranded and no way to get home, they have to build a community to overcome the dangers that the alien planet presents them with.

I love all Robert A Heinlein books, and this one is very enjoyable, as always, although I love some of his books even more, hence the four star rating. As Heinlein does with books in the juvenile series, sex isn't mentioned; people get "married" and have babies, with no mention of details. I love the twist on Lord of the Flies premise, with children of being lost in space because of a super nova and having to survive on an unknown planet, the culture shock at the end when the protagonist returns to "civilization"..a detail many might not of considered.

I am beginning to think that a selection of Robert Heinlein's juvenile science fiction books should be required reading in every Middle School class. Even though the science in these stories is outdated, in some cases badly so, and the social mores reflect the period in which they were published, the 1950's, although that may not actually be a bad thing, I think the young reader can still learn a lot from Heinlein's stories. They may not be able to learn much about science or space travel. Events have overtaken Mr. Heinlein in that respect. They will, however, learn quite a lot about virtues that will never go out of date. They will learn from Heinlein's heroes the importance of self-reliance, honor, courage and rational thinking. They will learn that doing the right thing, even at the risk of their lives is better in the long run. Reading Heinlein may even help young readers to resist the politically correct brain washing and mediocrity they are exposed to in our public schools. I can imagine one of Heinlein's older, wiser instructors telling a contemporary student that the universe does not care about his fragile self-esteem and that it does not hand out ribbons just for showing up.Tunnel in the Sky, published in 1955, is typical of Heinlein's juveniles. It features a strong, intelligent young man, Rod Walker, as the protagonist. Rod wants to join the movement to colonize other planets, accessed through gateways that transport travelers instantly across the galaxy. In order to be a colonist, Rod must take and pass a class on survival taught by the famous explorer "Deacon" Matson. For the final exam, the class, along with similar classes from other schools, is to be dropped on an uninhabited planet for ten to fourteen days. Whoever manages to survive passes. Unfortunately, something disrupts the gate and the students are stranded. They must manage to survive for far longer than they had expected.This may be Heinlein's response to Lord of the Flies published the previous year. Unlike the younger children in William Golding's tale, the high school and college age youths do not descend into savagery. They build a colony with a government. They attempt to recreate modern technology as much as possible and by the time they are rescued they have begun to smelt iron and to domesticate the native plants and animals. The young colonists do have trouble with students who refuse to do their share of the work and with dangerous animals, but they manage to overcome their difficulties. After their settlement is destroyed and their first mayor is killed by migrating animals, Rod becomes the new mayor. There is some talk of moving to a safer location that Rod had discovered earlier but he refuses to consider it, stating that they are men and they will not be moved by a bunch of dumb animals. Instead, they develop ways to defend their settlement by the time of the next migration.I should say something about Heinlein's supposed racism in this book. At the beginning of the story, Rod visits a gateway to watch pioneers going out to colonize new planets. First, there is a long line of Asians, poverty-stricken refugees being forced by their authoritarian government to travel to a new world. They are followed by proud pioneers from North America. I do not believe that Heinlein intended to make any sort of statement about the relative merits of Asians and Americans but was extrapolating a likely future based on circumstances at the time of publication. In 1955, most of Asia was desperately poor and overcrowded and it seemed likely to remain so for generations. I should note that it is hinted throughout the book that Rod is African-American, though at the time of publication Heinlein was unable to say so outright.I enjoyed reading Tunnel in the Sky when I was in fifth grade and enjoyed it no less rereading it as an adult. Robert Heinlein knew how to keep his readers interested.

When they realize that Oliver isn't able to hide in the trees like they can, they make him feel special with a wonderful surprise of his very own.A heartwarming story with adorable illustrations that will bring a smile to your face, Kit Chase's debut is a book worth picking up! The message about friendship is one that even the youngest of readers will enjoy. The sketch like illustrations, and soft color tones have made Chase one of my favorite children's book illustrators.

I preordered this months before it was even released because I discovered the artist on Etsy and fell in love. Then I spent weeks on Amazon trying to find stuffed animals to match the three animals in the book. Of course on Amazon I was successful. Now have three great stuffed animals that look almost idential to the animals in her book. The book is absolutely adorable and we can't wait for her to come out with another.

This story is ADORABLE! Purchased as a gift for a toddler who asks his mum to read nightly. The book size is small for little hands.-Nicole

This is a sweet book. I had originally bought it because I love the authors prints on Etsy and had hoped to copy and frame pages some from the book but the pages although super cute are not really set up to frame. My 3yr old daughter loves this book.

I bought this book for a baby shower as requested in place of a card. They are naming the baby Oliver and I was excited to find such a cute book with the babies name in it. The story is very cute, sends a nice message, and the illustration is wonderful.

So cute, and perfect for my nephew, Oliver!

Kit Chase is an amazing author. The illustrations in these books are amazing and so imaginative. The stories are perfection. We have both books and hope for more.

It also helps to know Latin, Italian, French, and German; all of these languages are used in the text and, especially in the footnotes, which are long and numerous. The reading is certainly worth the effort, but it takes some patience. This is a good value for the quality. I had a recent confirmandi that took the name Francis for Confirmation, and I hope that this "biography" will help him to understand the Poor One of Assisi better. I put "biography" in quotes, since this is not a strict objective/historical biography, but rather is Chesterton's attempt (successful I would say) to share the charism of St. Francis.

Chesterton's description of St Francis is intended by his own admission as only an introduction to the life of this surprising catholic. It is not a definitive biography. It is a beautiful celebratory description of the impact of Francis on the Church and the revelations about the tolerance and depth of orthodox Catholic belief revealing itself in the actual event of St Francis. Chesterton does not speak so much of Francis and he speaks of what he meant in the context of a humane and living Church emerging from the Middle ages. He does not quote what Francis says, but of what Francis would mean to a modern Christian. This book is more about the depth of Christian belief than the life of the Saint and because of the soulfulness of Chesterton's prose makes much of what is said about St Francis seem superficial. Reading another biography of St Francis first may be helpful in more fully understanding this book.

With a new Pope taking the name of Francis I was prompted to read GK Chesterton's book. I couldn't put it down. It wasn't just a pious book, but the story of an amazing mystic I really knew very little about. Just historically it is amazing series of events. This is a book for everyone. Writing as Chesterton knew how, and something I'll reaad again and again. I would recommend it to everyone - not just Christians, but everyone.

Although written almost 100 years ago, the book by G. K. Chesterton shows the remarkable life of St. Francis. Chesterton was a big admirer of Francis; the life and preaching of Francis was a factor in his conversion to Roman Catholicism. I am not going to convert, but I am also a huge admirer! Some of Francis' stories may be problematic for the modern reader (the stigmata, for example), but Chesterton approaches these in a thoughtful way. His prose may be a bit old-fashioned, but if you read it carefully, it is full of humor and insight. A wonderful read.

Almost everything Chesterton has written is pretty amazing. These two books are no exception. He has the ability to think and write clearly and coherently, and at the same time come at the story from a fresh and sometimes surprising point of view. Much recommended introductions to St. Francis and St. Thomas Aquinas.

Getting both books for .99 is a great bargain. Both are enjoyable and enlightening, but St. Francis of Assisi is much easier to read than St. Thomas Aquinas where Chesterton goes into the philosophy of St. Thomas which requires explanations and references to people and events that the reader may not at all be acquainted with. I suggest that St. Thomas Aquinas be read at least twice to better follow and appreciate Chesterton's detailed and close-knit reasoning. And have Google handy to look up the references to various philosophers.

Spoiler alert. Chesterton starts the book out by saying there are three ways to understand Francis and that he's chosen the hardest one. At least it would be if the other two weren't impossible. His clarity of thought and good humor are as fresh (and relevant) today as when he first wrote them.

I have several of Donna Hay's cookbooks in paperback. This and The New Classics are the first hardback books I have purchased. Donna Hay's books are some of the most beautifully photographed cookbooks I have ever seen. The recipes are not complicated and if you enjoy cooking, you will use this book. If you don't enjoy cooking, you will be inspired to try.

I have 3 Donna Hay cook books. All are beloved. This one is my favorite by far. Full disclosure, I have an addiction to cookbooks. I buy them to cook from them. But I don't like cookbooks with odd ingredients and the more pictures the better.All of Donna's cook books have pictures. This one is beautiful. The photos are slick, the ingredients not exotic, the food delish. I highly recommend this cookbook if you are a foodie that likes to cook and maybe impress your family while you're at it.

I loved the original format of Donna’s cookbooks and was not immediately in love with this one. But ... it grew on me to the point that I have already used it several times. The different applications from one basic recipe are a great way to show any cook how easy it is to be creative in the kitchen. A winner.

Great resource for teaching.I just wish it had the answers to all of the problems and a digital copy.

I am a blogger, writing articles for VBA, C# and other interesting programming languages. I was provided with an online version of the book from SpringerThe book provides you with 174 exercises, which can make you an advanced beginner (if this term exists) in Python. The exercises are well-structured indeed, taking into account anything from the basics of the language (printing, units, conditionals, loops and functions) to some more advanced structures as dictionaries, lists and working with files. The "more advanced" structures are present twice, thus you have two levels of exercises for them. The exercises are well-selected indeed. I liked them and I enjoyed solving (or looking at their solutions) them.Let's state the things I did not like:1. No code provided in electronic form. The code is written explicitly in the book. (I will not comment on this one, but I consider it a major minus);2. In the online version, the quality was somehow rather low, in some of the code I should have looked twice to see whether it is an underscore or a full stop;3. I wish the author has spent a few pages for instructions how to install a Python IDE. (but this is a small minus, after all this is a Workbook).Now, let's state the things I liked:1. Really good selection of tasks;2. The solution is explained well, with a lot of comments;3. A man can learn a lot from it, if he/she has another book for Python or follows a course, explaining how the language works.

I'm a proficient SAS programmer retooling for the cloud. I bought this book because I thought it would provide some good practice and some of the basics to get me going quickly. However, despite the subtitle of the book, there is no "brief introduction." The book is only exercises. That could still be fine if the solutions provide enough examples of syntax. However, when I went to look for the solution to the exercise I choose, I couldn't find it. In fact, the book contains solutions for only a subset of the exercises. How useful is that? If you are an experienced programmer looking for the basics of Python and exercises to get you moving fast, this book is not for you. I probably will use it, but not in the way I had hoped and I need to look for another book now to satisfy my needs.

This is an excellent exercise book for Python learner. The exercises are usually basic enough so beginner can learn concepts and have enough practice to remember them. I use it for my son's study of Python.So far, I have not found any other book that offers so many programming exercises, which is a surprise. There are many books on how to learn Python, but they don't provide so many exercises. So in this sense, this book is fairly unique and useful, hence 5 star rating.

I hope the author will take some time and write all solutions, maybe in a Jupyter notebook and place it somewhere on github. I would have given you 5 stars. Please reconsider this.

I found the book to be interesting and informative, and would recommend it—particularly if you’ve learned the Yang Style (but one may find the early chapters interesting even if one hasn’t.) The author uses a number of entertaining and educational stories and the book is readable and insightful for students of all levels.

I already had some knowledge of the history and practice of tai chi chuan and still found book a little confusing at first. It makes sense after review and practice. Also, must use DVD. Dr Yang is a grandmaster, he is a purist, and this book is very good, but it is not for the casual learner of tai chi or the person who wants quick and simple explanation. I found the guide on Chinese pronunciation helpful for learning the Chinese names of different forms, I find myself rereading chapters & gaining greater insight as my own practice of tai chi improves. I am a female, 67 yrs old and currently using Dr Yang's 37 form DVD. Tai chi has changed my life in ways I never imagined.

It takes months just to build enough muscles in your legs to withstand the postures and do the form. Something was always missing in Karate but the Qi aspect in Chinese martial arts is fully explained and enlightening as well as the Yin an Yang principles.The form takes 3 years to learn correctly and 3 more to begin to understand the Yin and Qi through proper breathing while doing the form. Highly recommended if you want to go far beyond mere health benefits and into the self defense aspect. It is not for the faint of heart as it demands great patience and perseverance to master...ten years to be exact....maybe longer if you do just the video and book.

This book is very informative, for those whishing to study Tai Chi Chuan. the DVD, for this book, would also be a great aid in the study of Tai Chi Chaun . But as long time student of the martial arts, it is also a good Idea to seek out a good teacher, and find some one to train with. This book and its DVD is a good start.

Dr. Jwing-Ming Yang is my favorite! Dr. Yang provides the most relevant, detailed information and instruction on Tai Chi Chuan. A must read for all who are interested in the subject by a top practitioner.

This is a veritable treasure chest of knowledge of the Yang style long form written by one of the most respected old style masters explained in a clear manner. One really needs to purchase one of the DVDs to learn the form if you are doing it alone with no access to a master. The Yang Tai Chi for Beginnners by Dr Yang covers the form nicely, but one specifically made for this book has a lot of valuable additional material. You can't go wrong with both.

Perfect Tai Chi Chuan book. It's a written journey from beginning to end, and on top of that always extremely useful, informative, well-thought. You can feel master Yang, Jwing-Ming talking to you, even when you don't have the book in your hands. Thus mentally you go back to those pages for movement corroboration and much more.
