This travel book made my trip to Vancouver great! It was very up-to-date, all of its suggestions paid off, and I didn't have to sift through internet adds and Trip Advisor to plan my trip. I especially liked the restaurant recommendations. It's a trip essential.

Good guide with slight updates. For example there are no belugas in Aquarium anymore but they do exist in the pictures of this guide.

we used this for a recent visit to Vancouver, and found it invaluable. the pull-out map is terrific, and the tips for hotels and eateries and walks were terrific.

Can't get to the city long enough to really enjoy it.

This is a fun, informative series--I didn't know anything about ironclad ships before reading this book! There's good adventure and humor, though I didn't like how the enslaved characters were portrayed at times--especially that one joke about the slaves (who look happy, smiling) asking to be "confiscated" by a group of union army soldiers. I got the joke, but it was in poor taste and with insensitive wording. I also thought it was odd how a group of enslaved people would ask to leave with union army soldiers, but the book never explains what the enslaved did after that. Did they then fight in the army? Did they keep moving north toward Canada? Just a bit spotty there and not well done.In any case, I'll keep reading the books in the series! Overall it's great.

This series is chock-full of great stories and wonderful history. This isn't a way to trick kids to read history -- it's just good writing, accurate illustrations and a rollicking tale. As author Nathan Hale says, "It's 93% accurate" and I'll add 100% enjoyable. Fourth and fifth graders at my school devour these books, checking out the whole series and then buying them for themselves (Nathan Hale One Dead Spy; Donner Dinner Party; Treaties, Trenches, Mud and Blood (World War I); and the upcoming Underground Abductor about Harriet Tubman).Can't wait for the next two books to appear. I hear the 7th book in the series is on the drawing board, as well.

My 8yo son has read each of the NHHT books multiple times. He keeps one with him wherever he goes. They can have themes that may be shocking for some, but those opened good discussions for our family. For example, _The Underground Abductor_ exposes some atrocities of slavery that I wasn't aware of. Our kid asked questions, and we talked them out.If you have a kid who loves learning and humor and you can handle having discussions about hard stuff occasionally, then I highly recommend these books.We have loaned a couple to friends who don't love reading for pleasure, and they also LOVED these books.

I bought my son the Hazardous Tales series for his 8th birthday, and we have both absolutely loved them. I've never had much of an interest in war history, and would never in a million years have picked up a traditional book on naval battles of the Civil War (yawn), but this one was so entertaining and informative! I'm glad to know that my son will go into 3rd grade with a broader knowledge of American history than most adults, and I'm happy to finally be learning this stuff myself!

I have never seen kids read and re-read a history series as frequently as this. My kids, a mix of boys and girls from 4- to 10-years old rampaged through them, enjoyed reading them, and learned a lot. They seemed to enjoy the subversive nature of books that kept in more of the fighting scenes than most history books. Your kids will (probably) love them as much as mine did.

My 9yr old (was 8 when he started reading this series) LOVES the Hazardous Tales series! He up until these books really wasn’t a reader and getting him to do his reading homework was always a struggle. But these have been great. He flies thru them and then spits all these historical facts at me so I know he is absorbing the content. He has read them all and is eagerly waiting the next to come out. Highly recommend!!!

We discovered these books when my son was 7. Nathan Hale's books have been a springboard into his interest in history. These are engaging, funny, and informative. I can't thank the author enough for the work he put into crafting these books. We have all of them and my son reads them repeatedly.

About the Author

Peter started playing guitar in 2nd grade and very quickly realized his calling. He played in several bands through his years at Okemos High, and proceeded to study classical guitar in college at the University of Ga. under the tutelage of John Sutherland. After receiving his undergraduate degree in Classical Guitar Performance Peter continued with his studies on a assistantship at James Madison University. While there he taught classes as large as 110 people at both James Madison and Mary Baldwin College. Peter moved back to Georgia and began playing the club circuit in Atlanta as a soloist and with a multitude of bands. He also founded and managed several schools of guitar including the Guitar Learning Center. During this time Peter produced many products for Cassette and Video such as The Guitarist s Chord Book, The Guitarist s Scale Book, The Guitarist s Intro to Blues, The Guitarist s Intro to Rock, The Guitarist s Tablature Book, and the Let s Jam Series. In the 90 s Peter met Jan Smith and began to play with the Jan Smith Band performing on several of her CDs including nonstop Thrill, Surrender, and Resurrection. In 2001 Peter moved into Jan Smith Studios where he continues to teach and do session work with local and national talent. Peter has performed on stage with talents such as Michael Bolton, Cee-Lo, Kelly Price, Steve Vai, Earl Klugh, Sharon Isbon, and Sleepy Brown. In collaboration with the NARAS organization he is the band leader each year at the Heroes Award Dinner in Atlanta. Peter s disc, So Many Notes, So Little Time, a guitar instrumental record, is slated to be released the summer of 2005. There really isn't much that can be added to the product description. It's not just blank tablature pages. In the back are handy scale and chord references. It's a Peter Vogl book which gives it credibility. I've got 10 of his other books which are fantastic! I highly recommend anything by Peter Vogl.

I have been using this book for years. It has everything I need to work with my private guitar students.95% of what I use is the tab - about the first half of the book. There is a great 2-page chord reference towards the back of the book. The book also has 2 pages of blank chord diagrams and 2 more pages of blank guitar necks (1-octave) - all useful stuff. I ignore the scales presented - I prefer my own book.My students like having one place where every tab we've done is located.Great book.

This has been a good guitar tab book. It opens and stays open. The blank tabs make it easy for my instructor to write in chords, notes etc. He highly recommends it and I agree.

This is one of the better tablature books. The print is big, compared to some where the lines are so close together you have to write small. Plus, it has a good listing of chords in the back

My music teacher recommended this to me. If you're serious about learning guitar you'll want this to record your exercises, lessons, and plans. No more scattered sheets of notebook paper.

I purchased this for my son who loves it. I don't play the guitar, but he was very pleased by the combination of line and graph combinations.

Helped a lot

The book was bought for learning purposes but it wasn't really very informative. For a student that can already read tabs I'm sure it's fine but for the family member learning it wasn't a lot of use.

This book would be incredibly helpful if you read it before your baby is is three months old. After that it is of limited use because most of the advice depends on you having done what the book said when your baby was a newborn. Late comers will still get some helpful tips, but may find another method or book more useful.

LIFE. SAVER.Used the techniques outlined in this book, and both my kids are amazing sleepers. After bringing our first home from the hospital (now 3.5 years old), we looked at each other, crying, exhausted, in pain, not knowing what the heck to do with this tiny, screaming, starving human that wouldnt sleep. This was recommended to us by a friend who said "read it BEFORE you have the baby", but we didn't, and that was a HUGE mistake. So, while trying to breastfeed and dealing with the pain of a rough delivery and 30 hours of labor, and after not having slept for about 6 days, got this for the kindle and sort of read it while in a stupor, and seriously, this changed our lives. Used the same techniques for my second (now 14 months) and he still resists naps, but both of my kids started sleeping through the night at a young age. And really, my second would be a terrible sleeper if it wasnt for the techniques in this book. He takes a 2-3 hour morning nap, a 1-2 hour afternoon nap (usually), and sleeps about 11-12 hours at night. My first still takes an awesome 2-3 hour nap in the afternoon and sleeps about 11 hours at night.If you need to know what the essentials are for a new parent, this is one of them! I now buy this for every baby shower I go to. All a new parent needs is this book, a crib, a swaddle or sleep sack, a white noise machine, a wubbanub, a few onesies & footy pajames, loads of diapers, and boobs/formula. All the other stuff they tell you to get is really just for fun! :)Good luck!

LIFE-CHANGING! You do not need to read the entire book to follow the system, but I was so impressed with it that I read the entire thing. I used this in combination with the CD of white noise and had my daughter sleeping through the night the very first night I implemented it (at two months old). I could almost see the relief in her eyes as I followed this system and she was finally able to get the sleep she was desperate for. It has been four years and I STILL play the CD in her room each night. This is my go-to baby shower book and I have purchased it countless times since.

Very little new information from the original Happiest Baby on the Block (which we couldn't live without) and this book itself is pretty redundant. Felt like the Groundhogs Day of reading. I think the better pairing is Happiest Baby on the Block + No Cry Sleep Solution.

Stuck to his strategies and had our little one go from struggling with naps and never sleeping more than an hour or so during the night to regular naps and 3-4 hour stretches in the first month. It is definitely worth a try if you have a fussy sleeper!

I have read the book many times and even have pages bookmarked that I revisit when I reach a new developmental stage and need advice for my baby. I like that it is not extreme (not attachment parenting but not the fever method either) so it gives balanced advice and doesn't guilt you for using one method over another. It also provides different options rather than preaching one "right" way.

We followed a lot of the advice from this book. Our pediatrician also recommended strategies described within. Our 5 month is sleeping pretty well which I think is in part due to things we learned from this book.

What a useful book! Karp's books have revolutionized my mothering skills and filled me with confidence. Buy this, the happiest baby book, and the fisher price swing. You will not be sorry!!!

Although some of it may seem far-fetched to people who have never been exposed to poverty, it seemed plausible to me. Get out of your suburbs, yes there are people who live like this.I'm not sure whether the mother was mentally ill or just plain selfish, lazy and mean. There are people like that out there. My mother could be pretty self-absorbed at times but FFS she at least made sure we had mac and cheese during the hard times. The eating the candy bar under the blanket scene while the kids were starving pretty much summed it up for me.The father seemed to me like a pretty typical addict, charming when they want something, and selfish, abusive and mean once they get it. Yes he was smart.The fact that the parents were not your typically uneducated poverty-stricken people who didn't know any better but in fact well-educated and (particularly the case with the mother) had they had the smallest inclination to provide the bare minimum of a healthy happy childhood makes it all the worse.I'm sorry...I don't have a lot of sympathy for the parents having lived through some somewhat similar (although thankfully not nearly as God-awful) scenarios myself. Glad the kids made it out ok.

I just love this story about growing up dirt poor in one of the poorest and most depressing coal mining towns in West Virginia. I am a West Virginian, and there were many poor and alcoholic coal miners in my family, so I can really relate to the struggles this family faced. Ms Walls does an excellent job of telling her story so the reader feels like they were there. I could feel her pain, anger and disappointment to the point that I shed tears more than once. I read the book shortly after it was published, and just read it again after seeing the movie, which was also excellent. This book is easily one of my top five best books ever.

This was a memorable and troubling story written from a child's perspective (my favourite kind of story). Folks are commenting that Jeannette did not judge or condemn her parents for their miserable failings. What I suspect is simply that she was highly intelligent and had keen insight into their psychology and knew, on a deeper level than most children, they were "doing the best they could" in a sense. Only she knows what is in her heart. I got the sense she accepted and saw reality clearly. Her zest for life, insatiable curiosity and hopeful-ness in spite of her parents' failings made her a rare exception among people who are raised in such a way, in my opinion. What I admire most about her is that she never gave up and resigned herself or allowed what was clearly abnormal to become normal.

Excellent description of places, excellent representation of how people speak, excellent presentation of the children's growing maturity and awareness. The author writes with compassion for her parents, but as a reader this book made me angry over and over as the adults indulged themselves with selfishness, immaturity, and alcoholism, leaving themselves and their children hungry and cold and the children haphazardly educated, even molested. The children's transition from a life of abject poverty to new lives in New York City is painted with broad strokes, and I can't help thinking there's another book in there. They would have had to learn how to live as adults in an urban environment, how to relate to people differently, how to see themselves as something other than the bottom of the social structure. When the author presents the scene in which she learns that her mother actually had a substantial amount of money - a fact that is hinted at throughout the book - and fully understands that none of it had to happen, she handles it without anger. The closing scene with its repetition of the image, "dancing along the border between turbulence and order," is satisfying.

I began to doubt the truth of this memoir when she referred to Fish Creek Canyon, Arizona, as being West of Bullhead City. The only state West of Bullhead City is Nevada and Fish Creek Canyon is far to the East in the Superstition Mountains near Phoenix Arizona. Sloppy work. Where is the publisher's fact-checker? If one writes about place and from place they need to know what they are talking about. I also found her descriptions of the desert generic. The Sonoran is not the northern basin-range.

This book was disturbing and depressing. I had hoped that the author would share some sort of insight into surviving neglect and abuse, but I sensed a sort of "top this" arrogance in her writing. She described her childhood as an adventure. Her recounting was emotionless. This is not a book that will help survivors of abuse. Perhaps it is for those who never experienced such hardship and find it fascinating. I read a few chapters. Now I am deciding whether to put this book on the shelf or simply throw it in the fire.

Excellent read. I finished this book in 42 hours. I could not put it down. I was surprised and amazed to hear it was on the New York Times best sellers list for 2 years in a row. Amazing. Not only did this book remind me of my own childhood. It reminded me of how far i have come and how grateful i am for all of my blessings. If you ever hear of anyone complain about their finances, send them to read this book. I commend the parents in this book for having emotional issues yet NEVER ripping away at the emotional beings of the children. One of my favorite lines is when the Dad said to Jeannette she has an "Inner Beauty". So touching. My 14 year old daughter brought this book home from school Friday the 20th Shouting in excitement and waving it in front of me saying MOM you have to read this book, I finished it 5:30 in the morning Sunday the 22nd. Couldn't even wait to get my amazon order on Sunday. I ate this book up. Thank you Jeannette Walls for writing your story, my daughter has had food every single day of her entire life. Now she knows my childhood stories are not crazy and i was not the only one who grew up starving. Blessings to you and yours. Heather Renee
