Filled with recipes and rich stories of the foods and culture. Love it.

Not only is the book itself beautiful, it's filled with wonderful recipes and loads of instructional and useful information about Indian cooking.Reading through the book is like meeting Asma in person. By the time you have finished reading her story, you feel certain you could be firm, fast friends. The photographs are beautiful and the book is filled with warmth.

If you want 2 recipes, give it a shot. I bought this but wonder why.

Amazing lady, amazing recipes, wonderful story!

Last thanksgiving in Yardley, PA I was talking with Zakira and Sarah Naeem about opening a cafe since it’s so hard to find good desi food and they mentioned that their relative had opened a restaurant and written a book and has done an amazing job. Immediately I googled and found this book on amazon but it was not available in U.S. My daughter helped me try 2 of her free recipes and they were very authentic and delicious. Finally last night bought the kindle version and love it.

I became an admirer of Jan Swafford through reading his biographies of Johannes Brahms and Charles Ives. My admiration has increased with this new biography, "Beethoven: Anguish and Triumph" (2014). Swafford offers much to think about in understanding Beethoven.Swafford observes that even during his lifetime, Beethoven was becoming a mythological, romanticized figure rather than a living human being. His stated aim is to present the facts of Beethoven's life without the myth. Accordingly, the book describes a Beethoven who was a great artist but who did not know how to live in the many aspects of life outside of music. His Beethoven is solipsistic, angry, self-pitying, and petty. He is frequently taken as mad. He falls in love with unattainable women and, to his sorrow, is never able to form a lasting relationship. He quarrels bitterly with most of his patrons and friends. He spends much of his late years in a custody battle over his nephew, Karl, which nearly ruins the boy. Much of this story will be familiar to those who have read about Beethoven. Swafford may exaggerate the extent to which Beethoven has been put on a pedestal in an anti-heroic, skeptical modern age. Swafford's biography includes a great deal of focus on Beethoven's early years in Bonn. In particular, he emphasizes Beethoven's early exposure to the German Aufklarung from his teacher Neefe and from the Freemasonry movement and its offshoots. Swafford shows how this influence stayed with Beethoven.Swafford portrays Beethoven as a composer who deepened and expanded musical trends implicit in the works of Haydn and Mozart among others rather than as a revolutionary who overthrew the past. As the book proceeds, Swafford emphasizes the romantic character of Beethoven's music in the latter works. He offers fresh insights into the familiar three-period division of Beethoven's music - the first in which Beethoven was seeking his own path, the second or "new path" dominated by "heroic" music and the search for triumph over adversity in a political or individual way, and the third "poetic" path which became introspective, wandering, and spiritual.Swafford combines his treatment of Beethoven's life with insightful detailed treatments of many of his major works. His discussions include some technical musical analysis but readers without a musical background will still be able to learn a great deal from them. He devotes a lengthy chapter in the middle of the book to an analysis of the "Eroica" Symphony. He offers a lengthy analysis late in the book of the "Missa Solemnis", a difficult work which Swafford finds is a summit of Beethoven's art. Swafford thinks highly of the "Pastoral" Symphony, a work which lovers of Beethoven sometimes downplay. He sees the 32 piano sonatas and 16 string quartets as works written throughout Beethoven's life, each with its own individual character. Those who play Beethoven's sonatas or chamber works will learn a great deal from Swafford's discussions of the music.Swafford has written a lengthy, thoughtful biography with many passages that invite thinking about and lingering over. As I read, I wanted to pause and rehear music of Beethoven that I have not heard for some time, including the quartets, the Missa Soleminis and its predecessor C major mass, the violin sonatas, cello sonatas, and the string quintet, op. 29. The book also made me want to return to the piano to struggle again with learning some of the piano sonatas. Just as Beethoven's music has an immediacy while looking towards both the past and the future, Swafford's book helped me understand Beethoven as a person to be loved in youth, to be understood better as an adult, and to be inspired by in old age.Robin Friedman

A remarkable book written by an obviously brilliant author who understands biography and music. I spent 10 months savoring this story of the great Beethoven's life while listening to his pieces along the way (bought a 60 CD compilation of his works). Frankly, I'm in awe of the depth of Swafford's research and his ability to pull innumerable facts together and tell them in a compelling story. I've read several hundred biographies. This is one of the best.

I'm going to say straight up, without any reservations, that it must have sucked to be Beethoven. We all know about his deafness and anger issues, but I was not prepared for the emotional rollercoaster this book took me on. With the myriad problems he had, it's nothing short of astounding how productive he was in his composing, et al. Of course, like the biographies I've been reading recently, there is plenty of musical analysis in between the life narrative and excerpts from correspondence, etc. I thought it was all rather sound, supplemented by plenty of musical examples, and well-integrated into the book as a whole. For the first few chapters, there was a tendency to meander as the time period was set up, but things flowed better when Swafford got to the meat of the story. I'm sure there are other equally good biographies of Beethoven (I've got two more lined up already), but this one would probably be sufficient for someone who is just dabbling instead of doing serious research. Because of the musical discussion, I will say that this book will probably be more useful to the musically inclined. All around, it's a great book that practically had me in tears by the final chapter. Highly recommended.

A book of over 1,000 pages does require a commitment, but this book is certainly worth it. I actually had to put it aside for a while after originally purchasing it because I felt it would be helpful to listen to the music in conjunction with reading Swafford's explication of it. I needed to be in a certain frame of mind for that approach. The biography is excellent because it unites the life and personality of Beethoven the man with insight into his music, his motivations, and the nature of his genius all within the context of his times. I thought it was a broad but relevantly detailed biography which gave me a complete picture through the eyes and ears of Jan Swafford. I loved it.

With this meal plan and great, super-nutritious recipes, you will not be hungry. The only problem with this diet is the expense. Carbs, it turns out, are fairly cheap (pasta, potatoes, bread), while vegetables, meat and cheese can be expensive. Every time you turn around, you will be off to the vegetable stand, but it is well worth it. On this diet, you will be well fed and your family, friends, doctor and insurance company will be impressed.

This diet is full of common sense and I have lost weight by following the guidelines. It is easy to follow with lots of veggies, sensible proteins and cutting out processed foods, white flour and sugar.There are some errors in the book though. In the first two week phase, you are supposed to avoid carrots (higher sugar content) yet in the first phase recipe section, the recipe includes carrots.A minor detail to be sure, but still, this is not the only example I've noticed and I am wondering who proofed/approved this and what other errors there may be. (Hey, if you are following something to the letter and the letters are wrong....not good)This is easier to follow than Atkins and allows "good" carbs and fats.This is not so much a "diet" as a way to eat well , enjoy your food and make good choices for life.I am learning to "eat to live" instead of "living to eat" and this is a help.

I did this diet in high school and the beginning of college where I lost over 60 pounds. I never gained it back! I've been stagnant for the past few years and want to lose a few extra pounds, so I'm going back!

After I purchased the South Beach Diet book I lost 25 pounds in 45 days. It surprised me too. My doc asked me if I was starving myself. I told him and another doc that i was just following the book's advice. Mostly eggs and meat to start. Got to get that protein. I also drank Ensure high protein drinks. The book came after two doctors recommended it. I'm way thru the first phase and now I can eat other foods and still eat out. I mostly have given up the bread and baked potatoes.This diet is working for me . Unbelievable.

If you're not careful, you might mistake this for a regular cookbook rather than a diet one. My wife, who is not on a diet, has been enjoying these recipes as well. There's a wonderful variety in here. The recipes are simple and easy to fix. I like how each recipe is clearly marked to indicate the corresponding phase. Some miss the mark, but the majority are right on target. There's a heavy emphasis on flavor.

This is a life changing book have lost 5 lbs in a week not even following the diet just cutting out the foods that he says we need eliminate in the1st Phase like White Bread & Rice, Honey, Sugar ect and eating the good vegetables and lean meat with a little fruit. I will be starting phase 1 assoon as I eat most of the few things I chose not to throw out such as fruit ect that will spoil. I have lost the weight around my waste asstated in the book. I am ready to loose weight and get healthy. I think this is a lifestyle of eating rather than a diet or a change of dietreally. The hardcover arrived today. I can see phase 1 as being a little restrictive but it only lastsTwo Weeks.

This is a very good diet if you have a lot of motivation. I have been fortunate that several people in my family and friend are also on this diet. My husband has already lost 25lbs in a month and I have lost 11lbs.The food is easy to eat maybe a little expensive and hard to find at times but good. I still have more to lose so I plan to stay on the diet for a while. Then there is a final phase to teach you how to eat the rest of your life.

I love this plan! It is more a lifestyle than a diet: it gives tips to change your eating habits for the rest of your life, without feeling hungry that was my big complain with other diets. It is well balanced and I got rid of high cholesterol after 2 months on this diet/exercise plan. I do not longer take cholesterol prescription since more than 3.5 years ago. I bought this book again because I gave my 2 ones as gift to other friends.

About the Author

James G. Fox, DVM, MS, DACLAM, is a Professor and Director of the Division of Comparative Medicine and a Professor in the Division of Biological Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is also an Adjunct Professor at Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine and the University of Pennsylvania, School of Veterinary Medicine. He is a Diplomate and a past president of the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine, past president of the Massachusetts Society of Medical Research, past chairman of AAALAC Council, and past chairman of the NCCR/NIH Comparative Medicine Study Section. He also is an elected fellow of the Infectious Disease Society of America. I really like the designs presented in this book. The actual designs are not only creative, but provide great starting points for personal embellishment. The instructions are clearly stated with drawings that actually are clearly drawn and make sense. I have had many hours just happily making these friendship bracelets and my only problem to date is what to do with them all??!! Love it.

Great book, nice patterns easy to follow full color diagrams. Many books of this type are black and white and impossible to make out the patterns. I am not new to macrame but in the beginning this would have been nice to have. I used to make much larger items: plant hangers, room divider type of sizes. My fingers do get sore using the smaller twine but that's me and my arthritis not related to the book.

I bought this for my nieces to share for Christmas and they loved it. They've made bunches of bracelets for friends and family members and even made some anklets and necklaces. I bought a large thing of embroidery thread to go with it so they would have plenty of choices in colors to create with. Absolutely perfect for beginner crafty kids and appropriate for either boys or girls.

An excellent variety of bracelets with easy to understand directions. I highly recommend this book for yourself or as a gift.

Best pattern book for friendship bracelets out there! One of several I checked out of the library, one book had lots of bracelets and no instructions for any of them. This is totally the best value. This had so many great patterns it was cheaper and easier to just buy this book. I love it!!!

The recipient was well pleased so I'm thinking it hit all the right buttons. Had a quick thumb-through and it looks pretty complete.I noticed that some of the designs used a clasp rather than the usual "tie-it-'til-it-falls-off" knot...not a bad thing if one is looking to make bracelets for more than just their BFF.

I would say that this book is more suited for a 10 or 12 year old girl who would appreciate the different designs that can be made. Got this gift for my 7 year old granddaughter who loves to craft. Thought she would take to making friendship bracelets as her mother had when she was this age. The concept of just making a friendship bracelet escapes her at this age. Give her a few years & she will be ready to throw out that rainbow loom.

I purchased as a gift for my Mother who makes lovely braided and knotted bracelets. She said she is “knot challenged” and the instructions in this book are very easy to follow. Would recommend to anyone looking to make knotted bracelets.

C. James Goodwin is an emeritus professor at Wheeling Jesuit University, where he taught for 30 years before taking an early retirement. He is currently residing in the mountains of North Carolina and is Professor of Psychology at Western Carolina University. He earned a Bachelor's degree from the College of the Holy Cross and a Master's and PhD in experimental psychology from Florida State University, specializing in memory and cognition. Do not purchase the e-book because they scanned it as a PDF so you cannot read it on the Reader Kindle. Reading it on your Fire Kindle or Kindle App sucks because you have to move the page left and right to read it. Really wish whoever scanned the book would have done it in EPUB. I did a comparison. What they scanned vs another book that was uploaded as an EPUB file. Huge difference! it's so much easier to read.

As far as history of psychology books go, this one is really forward and keeps a good balance.

Ripped apart and held together with a sticker. First chapter has pages ripped and unable to read some text.

I bought this book shortly after finishing Volume 1. With volume 1, I found myself staying up late to read more, but volume 2 gets tiring after a while... it's literally a detailed analysis of every single line of networking code in the BSD 4.3 kernel. Although it's well worth the effort, I found myself reading no more than about 10 pages at a time (constantly flipping back, sometimes almost all the way to the beginning, to re-read something I hadn't quite absorbed the first time).Difficulty aside, this book alone will honestly make you a TCP/IP guru - now that I've read volumes 1 and 2, the networking administrators where I work come to me with questions about issues they can't resolve. I'm literally comfortable saying that there's nothing I don't know about TCP/IP, and that's not a statement I'd make lightly (feel free to test me). But more than that, I learned a *lot* about writing good, solid code... in learning the networking stack as a whole, I was able to understand some higher-level software engineering concepts that had previously eluded me.All in all, volume 1 is The Hobbit, and volume 2 is the Lord of the Rings - an oddysey not to be undertaken lightly, but from which you will emerge stronger and more powerful than ever before.

This book dives into the BSD 4.2 and later code with great detail. There are still systems out there (AIX, BSD, Sun, ...) based upon BSD code. And it might provide some insight into the Linux code but I would suspect not so much.It does provide an excellent base to understand what networking code should look like, why it is so complex, and how the developers for the 4.2 code solved the icky problems they faced.

I really did like the book. Its quiet technical, but very in-depth. Not really an 'average' reader material like "The Art of Computer Programming series".It sort of bridges the gap between weekend reading, and a manual. And trust me I've read a lot of technical manuals.

never fails to educate clearly

- old BSD source code data but it provide the detail line by line comments- number 1 choice to understand the detail TCP/IP implementation

I bought this book because I was faced with having to port an application that uses BSD routing sockets and interface management ioctls to an operating system that doesn't support either of these features. The book contained enough information about these fairly obscure constructs that I was able to figure out what the mystery program was doing.
