I bought this book in 2013 but didn't really use it until 2019, when we actually went outside of Melbourne because we had a car. Given the passage of years......book is chattier than I would expect today. The paper map of downtown actually was helpful,with tram info available instantly by looking at piece of paper.Reading other sections, such as the part about the Ocean Road was helpful. And when there is no cell service, a physical book is a lifeline.

There's a lot of good information in this book and it was in my experience timely and relevant. I'd recommend the Lonely Planet series to anyone touring Australia, and I recommend Australia as a destination even more highly! One of the bet bits of advice from this guide was to buy a local SIM card for my phone and Ipad as soon as I got there. Armed with that, these guides, and Yelp you are all set anywhere Down Under.

I bought this guidebook shortly before renting a campervan and touring Victoria with a friend. No guidebook is perfect, but this guidebook covers most areas we have been traveling too and is surprisingly complete. Good resource if you plan on touring Melbourne and Victoria (which are awesome places to visit!).

I'm a bit disappointed. Good on accommodation and eating places but little on anything else. eg very patronising on Melbourne flower show, nothing on tours of Ocean road, shallow coverage of Melbourne hinterland. Seems it is aimed at the very young who eat sleep and party.

I think the book is fine...but I am finding the work at Trip Advisor more current and more accurate. Last travel book I buy. Just too dated.

I just got back from a trip to various parts of Victoria, and four days in Melbourne, and I have to say that using this as my exclusive guidebook was a big mistake. If it were not for the Internet, I most likely would have missed out on lots of interesting stuff.The complaints:(1) The map of Melbourne covers way too small an area of the city.(2) There are way to many places in the State of Victoria, including major towns, that are given short shrift, if they are mentioned at all. If you are going to do a guidebook that focuses on one Australian state, IMHO you should have an entry for each town of note (lets say, over 2000 population), but there are many glaring omissions in this book.(3) Many of the reviews seem superficial, at best. In fact, they seem so superficial and divorced from reality that it seems like the authors just hit Google to see what was what in a given town and cut and paste that into the relevant sections, with certain modifications for the style of LP books.To be fair, there has been a rather severe and hideous departure from a previous high level of quality for all LP books in recent years, and it seems like the editors have been pushing the authors to cut costs around the board by simply doing internet research instead of actually visiting places for each new edition--it really shows and the new owners of LP (the BBC) should be ashamed of themselves, but it seems that ever since the company was sold to the BBC in 2007 (or 75% of it, anyway), this has been the trend for all of their publications.After traveling with this book, I would consider it little more (and in many cases, a lot less) than being a conveniently printed and bound compendium of information I could have compiled using Google at home.One word of advice--do not even read the "Places to stay" section unless you want hostel type accommodation. The "Places To Stay" section is a total joke, worse than a joke--it leaves out the best places to stay almost anywhere. Tripadvisor.com is a much better source of information (and crowd-sourced information, at that) than the LP has been for a good long time.This will probably be the last LP guidebook I ever buy--it has become a total scam.

I used this book sparingly on our trip as it was difficult to use as a guide when travelling. Maps are too small and won't increase in size.

This book is really thorough - packed with lots of information about Melbourne and the Victoria region. A really handy book for someone who is going holiday in the area. About the Author

Terry A. Slocum currently is an Associate Professor in the Department of Geography at the University of Kansas. He received his B.A. and M.A. from SUNY at Albany, and his Ph.D. from the University of Kansas. Professor Slocum has published extensively in numerous refereed outlets, including Cartography and Geographic Information Science,  Cartographica, Journal of Geography, Annals of the Association of American Geographers, The Professional Geographer, and The British Cartographic Journal. He has authored the books Thematic Cartography and Visualization (Prentice-Hall, 1999)  and Thematic Cartography and Geographic Visualization (Pearson Education, Inc., 2005) . From 1999  to 2002 , he served as editor of Cartography and Geographic Information Science. He has been involved in numerous grants, including two from the National Science Foundation, and has received two Teacher Appreciation awards from the Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE) at the University of Kansas.  From 2003 to the present, he has served as Chair of the Department of Geography at the University of Kansas. Fritz Kessler is currently an Associate Professor at Frostburg State University (FSU) located in Frostburg, MD and has been teaching a variety of geography courses since the fall of 1999. Professor Kessler’s cartographic background has evolved through a variety of cartographic related positions. He began his career in cartography while working in Ohio University’s Cartographic Center as an undergraduate student. After graduating from Ohio University in 1988 with a B.S. in Geography, he worked for the USGS Water Resource Division in Towson, MD as a Cartographic Technician. After receiving his M.S. from Penn State in 1991, he joined Intergraph as a Systems Analyst in Huntsville, AL. Desirous to return to production cartography, he took a position with R. R. Donnelley and Sons as a Cartographer. Although a fascinating experience, he chose to return to pursue his Ph.D. at the University of Kansas, during which time he worked for the Kansas State Geological Survey as a GIS Technician and as a Map Librarian at the T. R. Smith Map Library. In his ninth year of teaching at FSU, Fritz also holds a joint appointment through Penn State where he teaches and online course on map projections, datums, and coordinate systems in the Master of Geographic Information Systems degree program. Fritz has published in Cartographica, Cartography and Geographic Information Science, and American Congress on Surveying and Mapping’s Bulletin. Fritz is currently the Editor of Cartographic Perspectives, a peer-reviewed journal focusing on a broad array of cartographic topics, has served on the North American Cartographic and Information Society’s Board of Directors, and was the Secretary in the International Cartographic Association’s Working Group on Map Projections.

It is a very informative text. IT can get dry at times and the black and white print makes it difficult to cover multiple chapters at a time. It is a good text for anybody who wants to understand how to best present a map to the selected audience. It also explains how to change things to better suit different audiences

Before I got this book I was but a lowly graduate student. Now, having read it, I have magically transformed into esteemed cartographer Waldo Tobler.

This book was written with a statistical background in mind. Ideas are not spelled out in lay terms and are difficult to comprehend. The authors tend to define things mathematically in the text and verbally in the summaries. The figures and summary and much more understandable that the text.

Using for a course right now. Really in depth but easy to follow. Wish it came with some related practice materials

Don't buy this book in Kindle format!This book proved to be nearly unreadable in Kindle format (I can say nothing about the hardcover, which is probably quite OK) . The pages can be scaled as a whole, but the text cannot. And since the layout is made with the text in two colums, scaling the page and navigating pages up and down and sideways makes you lose the continuity, and in practice it becomes competely unreadable. Referring back to a previous page or consulting an illustration is nearly hopeless.It barely works om a (large) computer screen, but I cannot read it at all on a tablet.This is more or less a kind of glorified pdf, and it is not worth the money.

This is the assigned textbook, but I actually like reading it. How to make maps and what cartographers leave out.

This was part of my Intro to Cartography class and it is a very detailed and comprehensive cartography Bible and a must own: Lots of photos, detailed concepts unraveled, a glossary for mapping concepts and theory.

My daughter & her husband were preparing to move to Minneapolis - got them a copy. Also got one for myself to enjoy their experience vicariously. They used it to set up and are using it still to settle in as they have accomplished their move. The resources & references are great - the neighborhood descriptions very useful. It is nicely written. Got so much out of it, I bought a more touristy book for myself and am planning to visit sooner than planned. (yes, they invited me :)

Although I have not made the move yet, this guide has been very thorough and informative during my planning stages. I've enjoyed finding out about each neighborhood and the different parts of the Metropolitan area. It is helping me plan the preparatory trips prior to the move, and I think it will be very useful for getting to know the Twin Cities after the move. It is fairly up to date, but as with every guide, there will probably be a newer version coming out next year. Fortunately, I didn't have to wait. This one is very good.

Very helpful. I read this before the move (6 months ago). I have since reread parts as needed. So helpful in choosing a neighborhood, and helping me with the initial move. I am originally from Ohio, and this book made the move easier, and much smoother.

I bought this journal about 7 years ago when I did the Atkins diet and knew it was a great book so I bought it again here on Amazon when I started the diet again. It has great information for low carb eating in the first 44 pages, Then it has a 120 day journal for keeping track of your carbs,what you eat,supplements,water intake,and exercise you've done that day,as well as a page at the end of every week for reviewing the week and putting in body measurements,and answering questions about how you did that week. There is also a spot for you to add your picture in the front of the book for when you started the diet and one in the back for when you have completed the journal. It also comes with a gram counter book which is amazing!!! I use it all the time it sits on my desk with the journal so I can easily plan out my meals. At $10.00 this journal is great to keep organized and be sure as to how much you are eating and how many carbs you've had for the day. I wouldn't purchase any other journal ^_^If you are reading this and not sure if you should get this journal GET IT!! I couldn't do the Atkins diet without it and neither should you.

THis is still by far the best tool for getting into the low carb-high protein lifestyle. You get the booklet with basic info and the journal is a very well designed tracking tool (though I add a column for Protein to the daily page). It's getting harder to find so I have a couple in reserve, as I do a refocus once a year to make sure I'm still on track.

Just piling on here, adding my two cents' worth of kudos for the journal and the way it keeps you focused on following the plan. I've been keeping track of carbs and exercise for a couple of months, just on scrap paper, and this is a nice little gift to myself. Following the program is a bit challenging, so having the journal really helps, and it's kinda fun, too. I can see myself wanting to buy another when this one is filled up. By the way, the little circles where you write in your carbs are in a light colored ink, so you can really write wherever you like on the page. I don't follow their layout precisely. The areas for snacks and little extras we might eat and wish to include are good additions, and I find I frequently have something to count that falls into a non-meal category. Very good product, I can't imagine any serious Atkins dieter, or low-carb dieter, not liking it.

I didn't have any problem with the journal. It's an easy way to keep track of what you're eating, net carbs, etc.The one problem I did have, however, is that this journal is packaged with a small, separate carb-counter booklet....but it's an OLD edition! I have the newer edition (red)....and the net carb counts on a lot of the food items have changed since the old, white-coloured booklet edition. They need to package it with the newer edition. I do not suggest depending on the older booklet to keep track of net carbs.

I bought this journal a couple years ago, back when I was getting back on the Atkins diet. I really liked this tracker. I taped my comprehensive carb counter to the front of this so that I could record EVERY single net carb that I was eating. It was great for when I was at home, which is pretty much all the time considering I home school our kids and work from home. I'm sure it would be Ok to transport in a big purse to restaurants or to parties, but other than that it's a bit clunky to take with you when you're out and about. It served is purpose for me.

When I started the Atkins diet I wasn't writing down what I was eating or how much. The weight wasn't moving. After I bought this book and started my daily diary, it was amazing. I saw the mistakes I was making and the weight started to just melt away. Would highly recommend that anyone starting the Atkins diet get this journal.

I like the book it helps me to journal what I have eaten, and it shows me how good or bad I am doing on my diet. I can look back and see what changes I can make to do better or improve, and I can keep track if I took my vitamins or not. But it helps to be able to see how you progress, I love it.

I have been using my journal for 27 days. I did not realize how much a little book could keep me on track. I like the info it supplies in the front to answer so many of my questions. Only wish there was a smaller version to fit in my purse. I have to use a mini-version I made when I travel
