Letters and Papers from Prison is a collection of notes and correspondence covering the period from Dietrich Bonhoeffer's arrest in 1943 to his execution by the Gestapo in 1945. The book is probably most famous, and most important, for its idea of "religionless Christianity"--an idea Bonhoeffer did not live long enough fully to develop, but whose timeliness only increases as the lines between secular and ecclesial life blur. Bonhoeffer's first mention of "religionless Christianity" came in a letter in 1944: What is bothering me incessantly is the question what Christianity really is, or indeed who Christ really is, for us today. The time when people could be told everything by means of words, whether theological or pious, is over, and so is the time of inwardness and conscience--and that means the time of religion in general. We are moving towards a completely religionless time; people as they are now simply cannot be religious any more. Even those who honestly describe themselves as "religious" do not in the least act up to it, and so they presumably mean something quite different by "religious." The pleasures of Letters and Papers from Prison, however are not all so profound. Occasionally, Bonhoeffer's letters burst into song--sometimes with actual musical notations, other times with unforgettable phrases. About the Author

Dietrich Bonhoeffer was born in Breslau in 1906. The son of a famous German psychiatrist, he studied in Berlin and New York City. He left the safety of America to return to Germany and continue his public repudiation of the Nazis, which led to his arrest in 1943. Linked to the group of conspirators whose attempted assassination of Hitler failed, he was hanged in April 1945.

It was over 50 years since I had read "Letters and Papers from Prison" and somewhere along the line my copy must have been loaned to someone and went missing. However, it was the original shorter edition containing only the letters from Dietrich to his good friend Eberhard. This expanded edition also contains most of his letters to his family members and his fiance. I am so glad I got this edition. It is the only way to see Bonhoeffer's depth of thought, his struggles with his conscience as to whether a Christian pacifist (himself) can justify participating in the assassination of Hitler. He also goes into depth about his suggestion for a "non-religious Christianity."You will also trace his wrestling with his prison life, and where it might lead. HOWEVER, I highly recommend that before you read LPP that you read Chapter 13 of Bethge's Biography of Bonhoeffer. Unless you do you will get the impression that he thinks his case will be resolved quickly. His letters to his family members often sound optomistic and up-beat, which is far from the truth. His family knew full well his case would probably end up with his execution, but Bonhoeffer wrote to them in a code that they would understand which gave them a much darker expectation. For instance, he often mentions the health of "Uncle Rudy." "Uncle Rudy" is the code for the war raging throughout Germany. There are many such codes in his letters to family which are given so they will pass the Nazi censors. These codes are well explained in Chapter 13 of Bethge's Biography. Many of the letters to Bethge (he was a seminary student years earlier taught by Bonhoeffer) were smuggled out of the prison and bypassed the censors, that's why their content is so much bleaker.If you want to understand Bonhoeffer at all you must at least read "Letters and Papers from Prison" and then surely read "The Cost of Discipleship."

It's impossible to write a review that can, in any way, describe the depth and intensity of this book. It merits a review of each letter. It is listed in Terry Glaspey's Great Books of the Christian Tradition. It is a collection of letters to and from the great martyr Dietrich Bonhoeffer during his two-year imprisonment prior to his hanging in April 1945. The letters express a vast range of thought and emotion. In a few letters, he does express complex theological ideas, but in most of them, it is profoundly readable as he expresses what it means to be human in a difficult situation. He acknowledged the revelation that the Christian life is not lived in theological work or in contemplation or meditation, but in the ups and downs of daily human life. Much of it is difficult to read not only because of the angst it produces but also because of the tears in the reader's eyes make it difficult to see the words on the page. As I have tried to say, the breadth of thought is too great to summarize in a review, but it was notable to me that he stated that he was no longer certain that the ideas he expressed in his book "The Cost of Discipleship" were valid. In the early days, he said that he read the Psalms every day and was reading the Bible straight through. He often quoted Scripture or referred to passages, testifying to his love of and value for the Bible, a Book that too many people deprive themselves of altogether, even though they are free and not confined in prison. He said that he believed that his time in prison was not wasted though he did not know what would come of it. He wrote, "I believe that nothing that happens to me is meaningless, and that it is good for us all that it should be so, even if it runs counter to our own wishes. As I see it, I'm here for some purpose, and I only hope I may fulfill it." Of course, his letters themselves present a unique view of what it means to live as a Christian in the most horrible circumstances imaginable. He often said that his fellow prisoners and the guards found him calm and pleasant, while he often felt anything but that inside. He was depressed, happy, lonely, content in solitude, crabby, compassionate. The entire spectrum of human life and feeling is expressed through these letters in a way that could never occur in a formal theology book. And in a sense, he expressed in a simple, straightforward way the thoughts of humankind about life. It is very simple and very profound and heartbreaking, all at the same time. This is a book not to be missed.

Reading all of the correspondence between Dietrich Bonhoeffer and his family and friends, instead of just the lifted out theological truths was extremely helpful to me in forming a clearer picture of this man. I loved the way theological insights just seem to appear in the midst of every day correspondence. It was like finding Easter eggs or, better still, like finding that treasure buried in a field that Jesus told us about.

I am intrigued and amazed at these letters. Letters to and from Bonhoeffer while he was imprisoned. What an interesting way to look back at the time of WW2. This book is only the beginning for me. I want to read all I can about Bonhoeffer. I highly recommend this book. It helps to know that throughout the book there are footnotes that help identify situations and people that are mentioned. There is also a family tree, an index of people, and an index of places.

Poignant and painful to read, especially since we know the "end of the story." Still, given the current political climate in America, reading everything by Bonhoeffer and about Bonhoeffer (I recommend Eric Metaxas' excellent biography) is appropriate. His live and words are spine-chilling in their application to our own evil times.

Dr. Bonhoeffer, a kindly elegant intellectually outstanding man, tried to keep the Nazis out of his church, worked internationally as long as he was free to keep church and state separate, was unsuccessful in his quest during his lifetime, was imprisoned for his efforts, and finally murdered b y the Nazis a few days before the end of the war.... to make his humiliation complete. He was not humiliated; his letters and books live on. His life work an example of what one man should do when the bad guys gain control of a patriot's entire country. Today his work is studied in fine colleges around the world, as it should be. I am Jewish and learn from every word. May God bless his memory and rest his soul G Kossow

She sketched out her first children’s book, YUMMY YUCKY, when her then one-year-old son was putting everything in his mouth. I may have traumatized my granddaughter with Yummy YUCKY! She's never been a tot who put everything in her mouth, not one of those kiddos who would eat dog food or rocks. She started the book looking interested in the spaghetti but the look on her face changed to horror when baby was eating worms. On to blueberries, where she reclaimed her balance, for a moment. Blue crayons, she was more interested in trying to scrape the blue off baby's teeth. When we turned the page again she pretty much tuned out all the good foods just to stare at all the inappropriate items baby kept shoving in his mouth. She babbled away in her baby speak but I swear she was saying, "Why? Why are you putting all those nasty things in your mouth?" Soap, sand, coffee, all got the same response, and then came hot sauce and the fire breathing baby...that was it, Yummy YUCKY was set aside. She did go back to it, but she has to hold the book herself and she has some pages that she skips. Toddlers aren't able to tell fact from fiction, nor cartoons from photographs as far as content of the picture. I wish I'd thought of that before we read this book. Yummy YUCKY, is not a bad book, and it might even be great for those little ones who have to taste everything. My granddaughter is a little sensitive and maybe a bit of a drama queen. Things that usually aren't important when reading a board book!I still think this is a good book for little ones who have a tendency to eat things they shouldn't. Toddlers learn so much more than letters and words from books that are well written and illustrated! I will knock off one star for the fire breathing baby, I think that picture may be too much for a lot of toddlers.

My little one loves all the books by Leslie Patricelli. They are short, simple books that capture his attention. They all follow the same format with a picture on each page, with one type of item on the left page (in this case "Yummy") and a contrasting item on the right hand page (in this case the "Yucky"). The last two pages of each book always contain various example of each type of item (see photos for example: "More yummy things" and "More yucky things"). So if your little one likes the format of this book, you have many other similar books to choose from (ie "BIG little", Quiet LOUD", etc).The build quality of the book is excellent and withstands attempts at tearing and throwing. The pages are made of a board that is the thickness of about a quarter (see photos). I know some others reviewers don't like that Boogers, Earwax and other items in this book but we actually found that some of the examples in this book specifically apply to Yucky items we are trying to teach our little one to stay away from like Garbage and Dog Food....which he always makes a bee line for when we aren't looking!The pictures are not only fun for kids, but adults as well. You'll have a blast reading this with your little one :-)

You pretty much can't go wrong with Patricelli's board books, but this is my favorite. It's a book of opposites, but it's really about what little kids should and shouldn't eat. For example, the left-hand page shows a baby eating spaghetti and says, "Spaghetti is yummy," while the right-hand page shows the baby eating worms and says, "Worms are yucky." Blueberries and blue crayons get a similar treatment, with the crayons staining the baby's teeth blue. Other clever pairings include soup/soap and sandwich/sand.The illustrations are simple, with strong colors and clear images. Small children won't find them too busy to follow, unlike some artwork.I sent this and a couple of other board books to my cousin when she had her second baby. Her two-year-old is entranced, finding Yummy Yucky uproariously funny!

I love love love this book!!! I bought it for my niece, and we like to sit down and read it. I love how she's understanding the concept of yummy and yucky and tries to copy the faces the boy in the book makes. She's 19 months and is in the stage where she loves to put anything and everything in her mouth.

Leslie Patricelli is the best and her book about baby toddlers eating is awesome. Some parents may not love the acknowledgment and/or encouragement that some kids are going to find things 'yucky', but that's kind of what life is like, right? Can't beat a bilingual edition, it's so great they're re-releasing all of these in English/Spanish!

If you're encouraging your children to eat vegan, vegetarian, non sugar, gluten-free or paleo, this book is probably not for you. For everybody else, this book is a crack-up. My 18-month-old grandson reads this book to himself and laughs out loud every time. He loves the juxtaposition of the charming baby face smiling at burgers and grimacing at boogers, smacking his lips at spaghetti and gagging on worms, etc. He doesn't seem to have been led astray by any of it--only deeply amused and happy to read, and that's sufficient for me. Can't wait to show this to my one-year-old grandson who actually does eat everything he can get his hands on, including crayons.

Very cute book. Sometimes it holds my daughters attention and sometimes it doesn't but we really like it. It's great for helping to teach them that some things are not okay to put in their mouths because they're "yucky." I tell my daughter "That's not yummy...that's yucky!" And she goes "Ewwww!" and usually leaves it alone lol

My kids LOVE this series of books. There is just enough Spanish that they can learn without being overwhelmed, the books are written in short complete sentences instead of just one word phrases like many "bilingual" board books, the context is made very clear by the illustrations (making it easier for kiddos to learn Spanish).... And most importantly, the books are hilarious! My kids are somewhat hesitant to learn Spanish sometimes, but they beg for these books.

Christine Roman-Lantzy, PhD, is Director of the Pediatric VIEW (Vision Information and Evaluation at West Penn Hospital) Program at Western Pennsylvania Hospital in Pittsburgh, and a private consultant for Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI) Resources. A teacher of students with visual impairments, certified orientation and mobility specialist, and infant development specialist, Dr. Roman-Lantzy has worked extensively in public schools and neonatal ICUs and NICU follow-up programs, where she collaborated with families, therapists, and physicians. She is the recipient of the 2008 C. Warren Bledsoe Award from the Association for Education and Rehabilitation of the Blind and Visually Impaired for the first edition of Cortical Visual Impairment: An Approach to Assessment and Intervention, the first textbook to describe an educational methodology for evaluating the functional vision of students with CVI and offer a framework for intervention. Dr. Roman-Lantzy is also coauthor of the second edition of the Preschool Orientation and Mobility Screening and has contributed journal articles and book chapters on orientation and mobility, children with multiple disabilities, and visual assessment for infants and has presented lectures and workshops on CVI and consulted with organizations and educational teams across the United States and around the world. Together with the Perkins School for the Blind, she launched the Perkins-Roman CVIRange Endorsement, providing an opportunity for professionals to demonstrate expertise in the CVI Range framework. Since first working with children with CVI in the mid-1970s, Dr. Roman-Lantzy has assessed thousands of children with CVI and other visual impairments in a variety of settings and continues to be devoted to supporting families affected by CVI.

Julia Alvarez left the Dominican Republic for the United States in 1960 at the age of ten. A novelist, poet, and essayist, she is the author of nineteen books, including How the García Girls Lost Their Accents,In the Time of the Butterflies (a National Endowment for the Arts Big Read Selection), Yo!, Something to Declare, In the Name of Salome, Saving theWorld, A Wedding in Haiti, and The Woman I Kept to Myself. Her work has garnered wide recognition, including the 2013 National Medal of Arts, a Latina Leader Award in Literature in 2007 from the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute, the 2002 Hispanic Heritage Award in Literature, the 2000 Woman of the Year by Latina magazine, and inclusion in the New York Public Library’s 1996 program “The Hand of the Poet: Original Manuscripts by 100 Masters, from John Donne to Julia Alvarez.” A writer-in-residence at Middlebury College, Alvarez and her husband, Bill Eichner, established Alta Gracia, an organic coffee farm–literacy arts center, in her homeland, the Dominican Republic.

I have read Ms. Alvarez' other book, How The Garcia Girls lost their accents, and it definitely was not my cup of tea. I had to read it in the fall for school and was not a huge fan of the story. This book,however, is another story. I loved how all of the characters were so different and relatable, with many layers unfolding as the novel continued on, as as the drama built up until the climax. I originally had to read this book for summer reading, and was disappointed; but I am so lucky that I read this book. I have annotated my first copy, then bought a second. I just think the Mirabel sisters are amazing, especially for someone as myself who had no idea about the DR and it's history. This was my first book of the summer, and the first chapter definitely sets in. This is the kind of book where you take in every single word and it paints a beautiful picture in your mind, which is what Julia has done here. I highly recommend this book, and also the discussion guide included also gives great points to think and talk about. Long live the Mariposas!!

I'm ashamed to admit that I had no idea about the history of the Dominican Republic. Obviously, this book is a mix of fact and fiction, but it still gave a history of the country before and during the Trujillo regime.Julia Alvarez takes us through the early years of the four Mirabal sisters into adulthood, where they all became involved in politics. At different times, at least two of the sisters and three of their husbands were jailed for their work against Trujillo's dictatorship. In 1960, three of the sisters were found dead, supposedly the result of a car accident. One sister, Dede, was not with the rest on that trip and she survives.I think that Alvarez is a gifted storyteller for the most part. My issues were that there were some places that could have been cut, as they didn't add to the story. I also would have loved more information on Dede, as she still survives. I imagine that must have been horrible for her. I would love to read her book, but I haven't found an English version of it yet.I'm not sure how the print edition of the book is, but the Kindle edition had a ton of typos. That really detracted from the book.

Yes! What an interesting story, simply told through the eyes of 4 sisters living under a dictatorship in the Dominican Republic. I wonder how many similar stories could be told about Cuba. This story demonstrates the worlds capacity for both evil tyranny and down to earth goodness in all of us.

What a sad reality. This story of real people trying to find freedom left me sad and unsettled. What a price is paid for freedom. This is a story of real people living in a country that was being overtaken by political leaders wanting to control its people. This was a great history lesson. I recommend everyone read this book.

Good plot based on real events. The characterizations were multifaceted, and I had empathy for the people involved. AND, bonus, it stimulated my interest in the time/place at which these historical events were occurring.

I would give this riveting story of personal sacrifice and courage five stars. Don't hesitate to read such a well told story. However, the translation from Spanish to English does the novel for Kindle an injustice. The word "pan" means "bread", but it is used out of context as the word "part". To have "pan" sprinkled throughout this translated version detracts from the beauty of this book. And the numeric 1 is used for the pronoun "I"...sadly silly. There are other examples. Julia Alvarez does indeed capture the terrible Trujillo Regime in the Dominican Republic as experienced by the Mirabel sisters and their families. It is sweet and honest. The contrasting personalities of the four sisters in this brutal tableau in history will captivate you. I came to love them. As the butterflies, or mariposas, these sisters were a unifying rallying cry for their suffering country. Freedom has its price.

This was book was listed as an option for a book report I had to do for my college civ class. This book was harder for me to understand at first because it was jumping from different character viewpoints that I didn't really know yet but it was easier as I read on. This was a good read but a sad story. It does give a lot of insight into the conditions of the time. I don't think I would've chosen this to read unless I didn't have the report to do, but I am really glad that I did!!

I loved this novel! I have to say that many of the stories found in this novel, I grew up hearing about them, so I think most of the stuffs are real. I cried at the end when Dedé received the news that her sisters were at Jose Cabral hospital in Santiago City, and she ask her mother to prepare a bag for the girls. Those sentences broke my heart! I am a proud Dominicana! Vivan las mariposas!
