The Prince of los Cocuyos: A Miami Childhood, by Richard Blanco

Review

“In this vibrant memoir, Obama-inaugural poet Richard Blanco tenderly, exhilaratingly chronicles his Miami childhood amid a colorful, if suffocating, family of Cuban exiles, as well as his quest to find his artistic voice and the courage to accept himself as a gay man.” (O, The Oprah Magazine)“Richard Blanco takes us on a thought-provoking, often hilarious ride in ... his coming-of-age memoir. The Cuban and Spanish intellectual, who was the first Latino, openly gay man and immigrant to be commissioned a presidential inaugural poet, illustrates the story of his childhood in the 1970s.” (Latina Magazine)“The Prince of Los Cocuyos had me laughing time and again with its warm, sweetly self-deprecating portrait of an immigrant family attempting to straddle Cuban traditions and American trends.” (Andrew Solomon, author of Far From the Tree)“Thank you, Richard, for this. The Prince of los Cocuyos is revelation and homecoming.” (Sandra Cisneros, author of The House on Mango Street)“I adored every minute spent with young ‘Riqui’ and his endearing extended family. And at the end-an ending so beautiful and throat-catching-I felt wonderfully drenched in love.” (Monica Wood, author of When We Were the Kennedys)“[The Prince of los Cocuyos] includes portraits and scenes, intimately and lovingly rendered… Having honored our nation as a whole in verse, he honors it again, but this time as witness to the life and fortune of one exceptionally American family.” (Los Angeles Review of Books)“... the anecdotes Blanco shares – such as trying to convince his grandmother to go shopping at the Winn-Dixie supermarket she so feared – are muy cubano and will give readers a sense of Cuban family spirit.: (TheGuardian.com)“In Richard Blanco’s Miami, memories linger outside coffee windows and in Cuban grocery store aisles… In a series of loosely intertwined stories, Blanco describes a childhood marked by loss, humor and hints of an exotic land called America.” (Associated Press)“A warm, emotionally intimate memoir.” (Kirkus Reviews)“Blanco has a natural, unforced style that allows his characters’ vibrancy and humor to shine through.” (Publishers Weekly (Starred Review))

From the Back Cover

Richard Blanco's prismatic and lyrical memoir of growing up in a family of Cuban exiles in Miami during the 1970s and '80s, The Prince of los Cocuyos, is a rich account of how Blanco, the first Latino and openly gay inaugural poet of the United States, came to understand his place in America while grappling with his burgeoning cultural, artistic, and sexual identities.

"Made in Cuba, assembled in Spain, imported to the USA" is how Blanco describes his story in shorthand. So, you would expect his memoir to be filled with stories and reflections that are completely unique to him. And, he has done just that - in a brilliant, engaging and, at times, hilarious way. However, he's also written a story that speaks to anyone who has tried to find their place in the world and within their own family. His descriptions of family members are both vivid and yet somehow familiar, regardless of your ethnic heritage. Blanco's stories will have you unexpectedly thinking about your own family, as well as the tales and trials that make up your personal story. In my case, his abuelita and my nana could have been sisters - perhaps because of the DNA that is commonly found in tough, immigrant grandmothers. In his "For All of Us, One Day: An Inaugural Poet's Journey", Blanco provided a glimpse into his journey that left me wanting to experience more of the journey. "The Prince of los Cocuyos: A Miami Childhood" more than satisfies that craving.

It is impportant when you read this memoir that you read what Richard Blanco says at the beginning because what he does is define memoir which is not the same as an autobiography. In other words, this poet turned memoirist makes clear that he, at times, fictionalizes but only for the purpose of enhancing what he is writing about. You will, I think, be trapped within the first few pages when you meet his Cuban-born abuela (grandmother) who is a character you want staying in the pages, not living next door! I love how Mr. Blanco is able to reach back into his past, especially with this abuela, and find the kernels that make her an important component of his childhood including her homophobic rants and what, today, we would all recognize as child abuse. But she brought with her, as did the rest of his family, the ways of some Cubans. Because I live in South Beach and interact every day with Cubans, mostly those who were born here, of course, I especially liked this memoir because it is salted with information (and espanol as well) that I have experienced. Like his wonderful poetry, this is a wonderful memoir.

Richard Blanco’s childhood stories growing up in Miami are hilarious (his convincing his grandmother to host their first traditional Thanksgiving–which starts with her thawing the turkey in the backyard grass), and heartbreaking (his growing up being constantly told men are to behave like men and never appear feminine let alone be gay), while showing the tug-o-war he felt with accepting his family’s culture and pushing it away for the American way. From beginning to end this was an entertaining and full of heart look at growing-up Cuban-American in Miami. (If you’re wondering what a cocuyo is it’s a click beetle that has glowing green eyes. It’s Miami’s version of a firefly.)

I have lived in Miami for almost 40 years and have had many first and second generation Cuban friends just like the people in this wonderful memoir. I never fully understood the intensity of their connection to the island until reading this memoir about love and loss of things barely understood. A joyous and sometimes funny read. One of the author's eyes is opened wide by the close of the novel, but the other is only awkwardly beginning to open. I am consoled by knowing how this sensitive and intelligent young man eventually found the special love that once eluded him and grew into a national treasure. Compulsory reading for any child of Cuban exiles, especially if you are from Miami and/or gay.

I'm a first year college student, and I chose The Prince of Los Cocuyos for a book review for my history class. This book was a good choice and overall interesting read to look further into the lives of Cuban American families and the struggles of being gay in the Cuban culture. Richard Blanco repeatedly compares the lives of his older family members when they lived in Cuba to the life he lived being in Miami, Florida for majority of his life. Furthermore, the struggles of Americanization challenged Blanco and his family to keep their cultural roots but also adapt to the American ways of living. The book also creates a realistic world of a Cuban gay male and how there are certain cultural standards to live to and the influence of elders with their opinions of gay individuals. Not only was this book a great choice for an assignment but personally interesting and informative to develop new perspectives on the struggles of immigration and coming out as openly gay.

I was right there with Richard as he navigated a life not quite this or quite that. Is ihe a Cuban or American? is the one unclear place in his life as he gets to explore the America of Disney and hang with more "Americans" -- his other exploration is his sexual preference. It is clear he loves women, especially the relatives who visit, who bring him presents, who squeeze his cheeks, who admire and appreciate him. Of course, Abuela is constantly making him closed in on his already hidden gay feelings. Then what I liked are the young men who came into his life, the ones who are or may be gay, certainly ones who exude life. I love his descriptions of El Cocuyos from the stocking of the wine to the banter of the regulars. Maybe only at the end as he fast forwards to the "now" of his life, it is rushed, but that's where the reader sees he has figured out a lot of his life. I just don't know if I wanted to know that part. That could be Part II of Blanco's memoir, and it may be. I love the author's poetry and love that he was the poet who read at Obama's 2nd inauguration, oh, and that he went to FIU, my alma mater. He brings his poetic senses to the heart of this book.

The Truth About Men INTRODUCTION Are Men Really Dogs? Why must I feel that? Why must I chase the cat? Nothing but the dog in me! —GEORGE CLINTON, “ATOMIC DOG” I almost didn’t write this book. While I was on the promotional tour for my previous book, The Hollywood Commandments, I decided I was going to take a break from writing for a while. I love writing, but I thought it was time to give it a breather and focus on other aspects of my career. But then one conversation changed everything. Maria Shriver was interviewing me for her Facebook show Architects of Change as part of my tour. After the cameras stopped rolling, I was talking with her and her staff. This was in the fall of 2017, right around the time the news of Harvey Weinstein’s sexual assault scandal broke. Inevitably, we started talking about this and I said to her, off the cuff, “I’ve always wanted to write a book called Are Men Really Dogs?” I went on to tell her why I believe men behave badly—why so many men seem to chase after money and power and sex, no matter the cost—and started laying out solutions for how men can take responsibility for and correct the problem. I also started talking about what women need to know about what’s really going on inside a man. Maria stopped me and said, “You must write this book right now!” I told her no. I had just released a book and I was going to take a break. She persisted, and I said, “Okay, I’ll think about it.” That was just my way of placating her, because I had no intention of taking on a topic as big and as potentially divisive as this one. But I couldn’t stop thinking about it. And the more I thought about it, the more convinced I became that I wanted nothing to do with this idea. It’s dangerous to write a book about what men need to do better. First of all, most men don’t like looking in the mirror (I know I don’t), and this would be asking them to do just that. But not only that: taking on a topic like this would require me to examine my own manhood and discuss it honestly and transparently. I spend a lot of time talking to other people about having faith and facing their fears. Writing a book like this would challenge me to do the exact same thing; it’s not enough to tell others what to do if I don’t do it myself. I have to “walk it like I talk it,” and I couldn’t imagine too many things that would be more frightening. However, I felt compelled that this is what I must do, so I decided to face my fears and speak my truth. WHAT’S REALLY GOING ON? In his song “Against All Odds,” the late Tupac Shakur, arguably one of the greatest rappers in history, spoke a famous line: “This be the realest sh*t I ever wrote.” That line resonates with me because it expresses exactly how I feel about this book. Of all the books I’ve written, this is the most timely, relevant, urgent, and personal. I’m a Hollywood producer and a preacher, and people often ask me why men act the way they do. Those questions didn’t start with the tsunami of sexual harassment allegations we started hearing about in the news in late 2017; however, they have intensified since the news about Harvey Weinstein sparked and encouraged legions of women to come forward about the way men have mistreated and/or abused them. I realized that in order to really uncover the issue and the root of men’s behavior, I needed to start by looking at my own life and family history. I was raised in Oakland, California, by my mother, my grandmother, and my grandmother’s seven sisters—my great-aunts. Because I was raised predominantly by women and spent so much time with them, I saw firsthand the pain that the many men in their lives caused them, primarily due to infidelity. As a young kid I was so perplexed by this that I asked them, “Can a man be faithful?” They responded unanimously, saying, “No. Ninety-nine percent of all men cheat.” What?! No way, I thought. I was devastated. It sounded like they were citing a fundamental law of the universe. Growing up, I heard (and still hear even now) the following refrain: All men cheat. Men can’t be faithful. Men can’t keep it in their pants. Men love power. Men are greedy. Men are dogs. I became fascinated by the question “Are men really dogs?” It was a personal question for me, because my father, Donald Ray Franklin, wasn’t around much when my brothers and I were growing up. He struggled with alcoholism our entire lives, and when he was just thirty-six (I was nine at the time) he died of a heart attack. Years after his passing, when I was a teenager, I was at one of my cousin’s houses and found a photo of my dad sitting on a bed next to a female family member. My mother was sitting on the same bed, but on the opposite side. Strangely, my dad and this family member were smiling, while my mother looked distraught. I asked someone else in the family, “Do you know why my mother looks so upset in this photo?” This person told me a truth that rocked me to my core, one I’ve never expressed publicly until now: My dad had cheated on my mom with another woman in my family. Damn. How could this have happened? My own father cheated on my mother with another woman—in my family?! I drew a quick conclusion: Maybe men really are dogs. And if my father was one, I realized, that must make me one too. This revelation threw me into disbelief. I decided I didn’t want to become part of the ninety-nine percent. I didn’t want to become a dog or act like one. This revelation also sparked my quiet obsession with discovering the answer to two questions: What is going on inside men? and Is something wrong with us? As I thought about these questions, I found the easiest response was to take the self-righteous path and assume I would never be like that. Yet as I grew into adulthood, I noticed that deep inside me was a growing and seemingly insatiable appetite for sex, women, money, power, and success. Appalled, I found myself consistently suppressing these desires—trying to live as if they didn’t exist. But again and again, I found the power of these urges to be overwhelming at times. Recently, society got a reminder of that power in the avalanche of sexual assault allegations leveled against some of the most prominent, powerful men in the world. As the stories started erupting out of Hollywood (from Harvey Weinstein to Kevin Spacey), politics (from John Conyers to Al Franken), sports (from Larry Nassar to Jerry Richardson), and other dominant industries, I began to ask myself—as did many others—“How could so many well-known, highly accomplished men get to a place where they allowed their urges to control them, consume them, and eventually destroy their lives?” How could countless men throughout history until this very day have such a difficult time remaining faithful? It seemed beyond explanation. These questions are not meant to be shots fired, point fingers, or be expressions of self-righteous indignation. They are part of an honest, anguished search for answers about what really haunts men no matter our age, race, or position in society. I ask questions like this about my own life: • How could my dad cheat on my mom with another woman? • How could I have impure thoughts and urges that don’t seem to go away with prayer or fasting? • Why do I sometimes think about other women, even though I love my wife? It’s important that I make something clear: There’s a difference between being a harasser and having difficulty controlling urges that could lead to infidelity. I’m not trying to put these things in the same category or paint them with the same broad brush, because the physical assault and violation of women is indefensible. Most men have issues managing their urges, but most of those same men would never think of sexually or physically assaulting a woman. I don’t smoke weed and I’m a not proponent of it; however, I’m told there are many different materials that can be derived from the Cannabis sativa plant. Hemp stalk is a strong natural fiber, with no hallucinogenic properties, that can be used to make clothing and other materials, while marijuana comes from the flowers of the plant. Hemp seeds are high in protein, amino acids, and essential fatty acids and vitamins, and are sometimes considered a superfood. They all have different purposes and properties, but hemp stalk, hemp seeds, and marijuana all come from the same plant. The same goes for men’s issues—they can take many forms, yet I believe they all stem from the same root. THE LUST PROBLEM The Me Too Movement actually predates the hashtag that gained popularity in late 2017. It was started in 2006 by Tarana Burke, who founded the movement “to help survivors of sexual violence, particularly young women of color from low wealth communities, find pathways to healing. . . . the me too. movement was ultimately created to ensure survivors know they’re not alone in their journey.” Then it was adopted widely in the wake of the sexual harassment scandals, and it became a way for women who have been victims of sexual harassment and assault to speak out about their abuse—many for the first time. In December 2017, the #MeToo “Silence Breakers” were named Time’s Person of the Year. According to #MeToo, 17,700,000 women have reported a sexual assault since 1998—and that’s just those who have reported it. Time’s Up is a crusade against sexual harassment that started in January 2018 by a group of three hundred women in Hollywood. It has a similar vision for women’s empowerment as #MeToo, but it functions as a next step in the movement with solution-based, action-oriented advocacy aimed at creating significant change, safety, and equity in the workplace. In the wake of the powerful and timely #MeToo and #TimesUp movements that started because of the wave of sexual assault allegations, I began to look for the root cause of sexual harassment and assault. Could the same fidelity and greed issues most men struggle with come from the same root? As I’ve delved deeper into my own life and also analyzed what’s really going on with other men, I’ve realized there is an issue that no one’s talking about: Men have a lust problem. This is the secret that men carry. While much of my focus throughout this book will be on sexual desire, lust is more than just a hunger for sex. Here is my definition: Lust is an overwhelming selfish impulse for sexual, financial, professional, or personal fulfillment by any means necessary, even if those means are personally, professionally, or spiritually detrimental. I call this lust the Dog. Every man has lust, aka the Dog, within him, and when we allow that lust to go untrained, unmanaged, and unmastered, it can cause men to behave just like an untrained dog. When fed, this Dog can become powerful enough to destroy every good thing men have planned for their lives. Our society is in a state of emergency because of unmanaged lust running rampant in men. As a result, men are causing untold damage to women, themselves, their families, and our communities. DOG TRAINING The most important benefit of training your dog is safety: your safety, the safety of others, and his own safety . . . a trained dog is a free dog. —JACK & WENDY VOLHARD, DOG TRAINING FOR DUMMIES Have you ever owned a dog that wasn’t trained? What happened when you left it alone all day? Do you remember coming home to find torn-up couch cushions, shredded shoes, and everything in chaos? Now imagine that house is your life. If men don’t train the Dog within, what kind of destruction will continue to happen to their relationships, careers, and reputations? The Dog hungers for vice, women, money, power, and possessions. It covets success. It looks for any kind of instant gratification. The Dog hates monogamy, restraint, and patience. But what makes the Dog really dangerous is that it is never satisfied. You can feed it vice until you think it’s full, but its appetite only grows. The Dog wants what it wants when it wants it. None of this is meant to excuse infidelity or bad behavior. Recognizing that the Dog exists is not the same as approving of it. Instead, it’s recognition of a stark reality: If the man doesn’t master the Dog, the Dog will master the man. When men cheat on their girlfriends or wives, the Dog is in control. When men lie, cheat, or steal to get ahead in life, the Dog is in control. Men all around the world, from all eras and all stations in life, from priests and ministers to poets and presidents, have struggled with the Dog. Even in the Scriptures, we find accounts of men, from King David to Samson to the apostle Paul, who confessed to having trouble dealing with the Dog within them. From Julius Caesar to Caligula, history is filled with stories of men who had trouble with the Dog. And while it isn’t exactly clear when society started referring to men as “dogs,” in many traditions (including Islam and Rabbinic Judaism) dogs have historically been associated with violence, uncleanliness, and sexual promiscuity. In an article on when Muslims began to have a negative perception of dogs for Quartz India, Alan Mikhail writes, “This idea taps into a long tradition that considers even the mere sight of a dog during prayer to have the power to nullify a pious Muslim’s supplications.” Every man has lust in him. Every man has the Dog in him. That’s the bad news. The good news? Every man also has love in him. I call this love the Master. Every dog has a master. Every man has a Dog and every man has a Master within. The cure for the problem of the Dog is Mastery. The Master represents the love in a man—the love of self, love of family, love of the woman in his life, the love of community. There’s enough love in a man to counteract the lust in a man. I believe every man truly wants to love and be loved. However, as men we aren’t taught how to love. Most men stumble in this area of learning what it means to love, especially self-love. This is why Mastery must be practiced, because the more men practice love and being loving, the stronger the Master will become. When the Master is in control, the Dog must obey. Mastering love is the key to everything, because the Dog cannot be eliminated—it can only be mastered. Mastery, as I define it, is the practice of learning to love. Without Mastery, the Dog leads men to act against marriage vows and damage their integrity, and it even changes the fiber of a man’s character. In order for men to be truly successful, there must be recognition that the Dog has the power to destroy and a choice must be made to discipline it. Love is indeed the most powerful force in the universe and that’s why the love—aka the Master—in men must be empowered, developed, and unleashed. The Master knows how to honor himself and the women in his life. He’s respectful and consistent. He’s a warrior for peace and well-being. He craves responsibility and accepts accountability. He’s a builder who creates a happy home and a strong family because they are the most important things in his life. He’s at his best, fully expressing his potential. He’s thoughtful and compassionate. He’s sexy because he can handle commitment. He’s a man, not a boy in a man’s body. Most of all, a Master bows to The Master. He understands that the true power to tame the Dog comes from above. Mastering the Dog is dangerous work. Why? Because it requires a combination of transparency and discipline that men rarely employ. How do men master the Dog? By committing to training it. Training is everything, and it’s the key to success. Noted dog trainers Jack and Wendy Volhard say this about training: “After all, a well-trained dog is a happy dog, and happy dogs have happy owners. However, you can’t expect a dog to do what you want him to do (or don’t want to do) unless you show him what your expectations are. And your dog won’t learn properly or be willing to heed your commands unless you use effective training methods.” THE TRUTH ABOUT MEN: WHAT MEN AND WOMEN NEED TO KNOW It’s time for us as men to do our work, because we are the problem. For too long we have placed the responsibility of our poor behavior at the feet of women. It’s time for men to “man up” and allow the buck to stop with us. However, we generally don’t like to do our work. We’re stubborn and resistant to looking in the mirror and acknowledging that we have to change. A 2015 clip of DJ Khaled’s appearance on Power 105’s The Breakfast Club went viral because of his views on gender roles. He said, “You gotta understand, I’m the don. I’m the king . . . It’s different rules for men. We the king so there’s some things y’all might not wanna do, [but] it gotta get done. I just can’t do what you want me to do. I just can’t.” I’m a fan of DJ Khaled’s work, and it’s unclear whether his thinking has changed since this interview. However, the attitude he displays here isn’t unique. The belief that there are different rules for men and women is a stubborn ideology, and when men (and women) buy into this thinking, change becomes elusive and nearly impossible. There aren’t different rules for men and women. And we shouldn’t buy into an idea that somehow women are subordinate because these fictitious rules imply that men are superior. If we believe in a double standard, in a set of rules that implies the superiority of men just because they are male, this double standard belief can continue to perpetuate the various kinds of abuse (psychological, physical, spiritual, and emotional) that women have experienced and continue to experience at the hands of men. Many men have bought into a false idea of what it means to be a man. This false idea leads to feelings of entitlement, and that contributes to chauvinistic behavior that is detrimental to men, and especially to women. I wrote this book to help men and women understand how this all goes back to the Dog, and to help men learn how to master it. It may seem strange that I also wrote this book for women, but I did because they are on the receiving end of much of the damage the Dog does, and I want them to understand how to deal with the Dog too. Ladies, we are all in this together, and I wish I could tell you that every man in your life is going to do the work and is automatically going to get it together, but that’s just not true. I pray this book will motivate and inspire them to become better, but while that process is under way, I don’t want you to be in the dark. I want to tell you the truth as I see it as a way to help you deal with the Dog too. I wrote the book The Wait with my wife, Meagan. It is a countercultural book about relationships that encourages readers to value delayed gratification over instant gratification, primarily by waiting for sex until marriage. In that book, we talk about the incidents in our personal lives that led us to make a vow of celibacy even before we started dating each other and about the benefits we experienced in our life as we waited. We had no idea the book would strike such a strong chord with men and women all around the world. I decided to wait while I was still single, many years before I ever met Meagan, because I didn’t want to be preaching one thing and doing another. Navigating life in Hollywood as a single, celibate, high-powered executive and preacher definitely came with its set of challenges; however, it ultimately gave me experience and credibility with how to master the Dog. The practice of consistently sacrificing my personal desire for sex, managing my own lust for power, and committing to the process of personal success as a single man has helped me navigate the challenges of the Dog as a married man. This experience has given me the credibility to equip men and women with tools to become more successful in these areas. That journey laid the foundation for me to write this book. Since The Wait was published, women from all over the world have contacted me, telling me they are tired of the pain men cause when they say one thing and do another. They have also told me they are sick of men telling them “what they need to know about men” without having those same men be challenged to take responsibility for their actions. More than once, I’ve been asked, “DeVon, when are men going to step up?” Even though Maria Shriver’s prompting was compelling, I finally decided to write this book because I was tired of seeing the hurt in women’s eyes when they talk about the pain, anger, humiliation, and devastation men have caused them because so many men haven’t or won’t commit to the process of controlling their lust. I realized it was time to write this book when I saw that there are men out there who are legitimately struggling with how to become better men, yet have almost no guidance on how to do so. I don’t write this from a perspective of some self-righteous master. I’m no exception to any of the difficult truths I tackle in this book. Even though I’m a faithfully and happily married man for six years now, I have a Dog within me, too. If I try to act like my standing as a man of faith and a man in Hollywood makes me immune to my own lust, I am setting myself up for destruction, and I increase the chances that I will one day see the hurt in my wife’s eyes. Every single day I have to work at accepting, training, and mastering the Dog so that it doesn’t get the best of me. It’s some of the hardest yet most rewarding work I’ve ever done. All men are vulnerable to the Dog. If I act like I’m not, pride will make me its victim. It’s not just me, either. All over the world, good, well-intentioned men have the potential to be ruined by the Dog. Why? Because the Dog that remains unacknowledged, undisciplined, and untrained is dangerous. Training the Dog is not easy, but it can be done. Academy Award winner Jamie Foxx tells a story about how the Dog within him was out of control before the Oscars in 2005 when he was up for Best Actor for playing Ray Charles in Ray. In an interview with Howard Stern on May 23, 2017, he said, “I’m having such a good time, and I’m not knowing I’m f**king up, I mean I’m drinking, I’m doing every f**king thing you could possibly imagine or not and then I get a call.” The call was from none other than Oprah Winfrey, and she was not pleased. In the interview with Stern, Foxx said that Oprah told him, “You’re blowing it, Jamie Foxx. All of this gallivanting and all this kind of sh*t, that’s not what you want to do. I want to take you somewhere. Make you understand the significance of what you’re doing.” He said that Oprah took him to a gathering at Quincy Jones’s home in the Hollywood Hills, where some of the top black actors from the 1960s and ’70s were waiting to do something like an intervention. Among them was the legendary actor Sidney Poitier, who said to Jamie, “I want to give you one thing. I want to give you responsibility. When I saw your performance, it made me grow two inches.” The message they were sending was clear: You have an opportunity, but also a responsibility. Don’t screw it up. Foxx says he was so moved, and so ashamed, that he wept. He told Stern, “To this day, it’s the most significant time in my life.” Oprah and those great men did something that is the key to getting the Dog under control: they appealed to the Master, and they succeeded in helping Foxx tame the Dog. A USER’S MANUAL The Truth About Men is a user’s manual for both men and women, whether single or married, to help them become equipped with the necessary knowledge, insights, and tools to transform their lives. Men, this book will give you the road map for how to unleash the Master within. It will help you get control of the Dog, become the man you were created to be, and give you the help you need to claim victory in every area of your life. Women, this book will give you insight into men and give you a look behind the veil of manhood. With knowledge there is tremendous power, and this book will give you real-time understanding on navigating your personal and professional relationships with men more effectively. But I will go beyond that, and give you specific information on not only what you’re up against, but also on how to prevail. This book is to be used as a conversation and communication starter. Men and women spend too much time talking at one another and not enough time talking with one another. Where there is no communication, there can be no transformation. My hope is that this book can be used as a powerful tool for personal and collective transformation for both men and women. Yet, this all starts with building and repairing effective communication. We have to start by first having honest conversations. Honesty isn’t a sign of weakness but of strength. When we can admit we don’t have it all together, that we’re struggling to figure out how to deal with one another better and that we need help in the process, this is when positive change can take place. Communication is one of the main keys to effecting change. Communication is also one of the key tools of effective training. I utilize the dog-training metaphor throughout the book not as a way to vilify or demonize men, but because I think of the metaphor as a transformational framework to introduce practical tips and tools that can lead to true freedom and personal success. In my own life I’ve seen the power of what training can do, and I know it can do the same for any man who has the courage to try it and any woman who has the desire to listen. So, are men really dogs? No. But it’s time we learn to stop acting like we are.

Initially, I bought this book merely to be supportive of DeVON Franklin. I celebrate the integrity of his persona; I also respect the quality and morality of his work in entertainment. While I realize no one's a saint and no one's achieved perfection, I'm always fascinated when a person is brave enough to be true to a higher standard even when they may work in an industry that readily rewards other behavior. BUT - OH GOODNESS THE BOOK IS SURPRISINGLY GOOD! Please forgive me for failing to even consider that I ACTUALLY NEEDED TO READ THE BOOK. (type out the embarrassed🙈emoji here). The book is so transparent, complete with first-hand testimony and revelation. I learned things about the male mind that changed my approach to certain things. I'm also elated to witness the emergence of men like DeVON that are "alpha" enough to face correction and accountability. He shares critical advice about gender and relationships, and he makes me feel that there's no longer any need for the BATTLE OF THE SEXES. This book fosters an understanding that we are all in this together as brothers, sisters, spouses & friends....as we overcome the flaws and deficiency of the human condition, books like "The Truth About Men..." will be important catalysts Congrats DeVON...You've Done an Amazing Job...You Are a Part of the Elevation of the Culture!

The Truth About Men...a must read for men and women! This book has raw, honest, and transparent truth about men and includes prayers and questions for self reflection and assessment. This book is a life changer!

This book gives excellent insight for both men and women. For men, I imagine it’s good to hear that you aren’t struggling alone and there is hope with practical steps on being a better man. For women, it’s helpful to know how men are struggling and what can be done to help. Also for women it’s good to see the pitfalls to avoid as to not get stuck in a relationship that’s not good.I really like this book because Devon is honest with what he’s saying but he’s also being a Christian man about it!

I absoulety reccommed this book 100% it’s like having a personal accountability partner with you at all times. It’s the Truth we need to succeed in life and relationships.

The is a powerful book i highly recommend that you buy it now everyone . Even buy it for everyone you know. That's how good this book is. There is so much wisdom in this book. Keep on reading.

This book completely changed how I view men. So eye opening and real. I have learned so much and I am only half way through the book. I can see this will be a go to book often when I am struggling with behaviors from my husband that make zero sense to me! Thank you Devon your candor was so enlightening.

I have unfortunately personally experienced much of what DeVon Franklin writes about in this excellent primer on dealing with men when they exhibit behaviors that are out of control. Reading his brilliant and compassionate insight into the minds of these types of men gave me a new sense of freedom and comfort. He was able to explain much of the why some men behave so wrecklessly and how it most often has little to do with the women in their lives. He also gives much practical good advice to make life better for all involved. Fantastic book on the subject!!

I’m very supportive of Devon Franklin and would have only done myself a disservice to have not invested my time to reading another great book written by him. The Truth About Men is so transparent and gives you so much insight. DeVon is merely releasing a movement that is so contagious and positive, how could you not connect yourself to a higher vibration of self realization and improvement. All of his work from his teachings, readings and films are ushering in a new celebration of self love, self reflection, faith, healing, understanding, revelation and elevation!

#18,128 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

This was a fun YA book, easy to read and kept my interest. Actually, at first I found the main character very annoying (she's a serious whiner, and I'm tired of fictional teen whiners), but I persevered, thinking there was enough potential for a cool story. And I was right. The plot itself isn't super original, but I love the coolness of the town and all it brings with it, and the characters were likeable, aside from the afore mentioned whining. I'd say 'Sleepless' is more plot-driven than character-driven, but not dry by any stretch, and the plot holds it together well. I enjoyed wondering what was going on and was satisfied by the story's conclusion. I'm glad to know that this isn't a standalone novel, since there is still a lot to be discovered in Narrowdale. And that's all I can say about it without giving things away. The only other downside I can think of that some things seemed unlikely, like the house in this little town being smaller than their house in LA, and the fact that as far as I can remember, everyone in the town was white if they were described. In California, that just doesn't seem likely. Maybe in rural Kansas. The lack of diversity is why this review won't make it to my blog. If there were typos, I don't remember them. I need to review immediately after reading, or at least take notes, but sometimes I'm a slacker.Language: A couple 'bad words'.Sexual Content: NoViolence: Sort of, but I don't remember anything graphic. It IS a paranormal murder mystery, so a little violence is to be expected.Overall Plot/Message: No message, just a nice plot worth reading if you like the genre. rawhitebooksandmore.weebly.com

I would describe this as an intense and surreal high school murder mystery with some paranormal elements. I don't typically read middle grade fiction, but this had me hooked. It had a cinematic feel and an impulsive main character who made me want to keep turning the pages. Amy initially seems like an ordinary (if slightly bratty) 14-year-old girl, but her volatile personality becomes compelling reading as the book goes on.When Amy moves to the suburban neighborhood of Narrowdale, she finds herself socially isolated in her new school. There were a number of cringeworthy encounters with new classmates during which I was blushing for Amy. I enjoyed watching the slow build of her new friendships with Coral and Shane.Sleepless has a strong David Lynch feel in the sense that it describes an archetypal American suburban town that has dark and surreal undercurrents. Something sinister lurks behind the picket fences...I found that it took me a few chapters to get into it. Part of that might have been that it's written in the present tense, which is unusual for a middle grade or YA book. But by a 1/3 of the way into the book, I was hooked to the point where I wouldn't put it down in the car even though it was making me feel nauseas to read in a moving vehicle. I read most of it in one day. There is a compelling and tragic mystery at the heart of this story, and I found myself increasingly desperate to find out the answers. I enjoyed watching Amy develop friendships with two other Narrowdale outcasts as she is drawn deeper into the town's mysteries. Also important to mention--there is some great subtle and dry humor. An example:This tree is way higher than I thought, and it’s swinging in the wind! I hug it tightly and shut my eyes.“Amy?”“What?”“Isn’t it hard to look inside the house with your eyes shut?”“No, no, I got this.”“Cause when I close my eyes, I see mostly darkness.”“Yeah?”“Maybe with you it’s different.”“Yeah. Just give me a second.”

I began by empathizing with the teenage heroine. Having moved around a lot in my formative years, I've had firsthand experience of the Mean Girl treatment & the author nailed it. From there, the tension built as it became more & more evident that something profoundly weird was going on in Narrowdale. As the story wore on, it became a nail biting, edge of your seat, can't put it down book that totally engages a reader and doesn't let go until the last sentence. Looking forward to reading Moth To a Flame, Book Two in this Narrowdale series.

This is my second read by this author and it does not compare to the mystery I previously read. Stopped midway and was disappointed, sorry

This book becomes better towards the end. The characters develop slowly at the beginning, but the plot brings the personalities of the characters together after the first half. I would recommend this book to friends with that advice.

The book was interesting through out. It was not the type of story I would usually read, but it was good.

I really like his writing. I have enjoyed every one of his books so far.

Easy to read and connect to the characters. From something light and funny transforms into adventures and scary. Will defiantly recommend this book for both young and adult readers!P.S Try not to finish this book at night. You need a daylight to handle it :)

Great book if you are interested in traveling to India. The book provides great information for your trip as well as all the historical places you will want to visit on your journey. Highly recommended.

Definitely not a travel guide; poorly written

big nothing. no interesting info. waste of money. waste of time.

You'll get everything you need to know from this book. There are the best timing to schedule a visit and a meeting etiquette, and a list of main festivals and holidays. That opportunity to use Ayurveda looks very tempting as for me. And of course, I would like to visit Goa!

I don't know about you, but I can always use some help being a better husband. Emerson Eggerichs's book Love and Respect: The Love He She Most Desires, The Respect He Desperately Needs can be a great resource for many couples. However, while the principles he addresses are certainly universal and solid, the application probably does not apply to many marriages. Marriages are as different and varied as we are. I've found that books on marriage often fail to connect by universalizing what helps some couples, trying to apply to all couples.Eggerichs bases his teaching on Ephesians 5:33: "Each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband." He says that Paul intentionally did not say the wife must love her husband and that a husband must respect his wife because those come naturally to men and women. I'm not sure about that assumption. I may be mistaken, but it seems like the book is weighed much more heavily toward the wife respecting the husband side of that equation.I wouldn't mind going to one of Eggerichs's Love and Respect marriage conferences. Any book or conference like this that triggers your thinking about marriage roles and being a better spouse has value, whatever quibbles I have with the presentation. The best line from the book was from a story he told about a couple they counseled. The couple was in a "crazy cycle" and the wife had refused to have sex with her husband for some time. She was speaking with her mom, whose long, happy marriage the daughter admired. Mom's advice: Stop denying sex! Why not do something that takes so little time and makes him so happy? She wins the mother-in-law of the year award! So my feeling is mixed on this book. It definitely has some helpful sections, but, depending on your personality and the personality of your marriage, it may not hit home with you.

I am a counseling psychologist who specializes in clinical treatment and research of couples and marriage. I read this book out of curiosity. There are few books on the market that are 1) as popular as this book and 2) leave me more heartbroken due to misinformation.I think this book does well to highlight that love and respect are, indeed, very key aspects of relationships (for both partners, btw: women also need respect, and men also need love). I completely see how some, without a critical eye of the book, are positively impacted by the message. However, the author boldly claims that connection and communication are principles that only wives are interested in (false).Perhaps most harrowing, the author declares proudly that his book helped a woman return to her husband, who was abusive for many years, because she learned to "keep her mouth shut" and give him some respect (this is NOT how domestic abuse should be handled). He also shares a story where he was frustrated at his wife because she was frustrated with him for not getting a proper card (basically said don't get mad at me that i got the wrong card, just deal with it and don't get mad!) Another example that seemed particularly childish to me was that the author complained that his wife insisted he pick his wet towels up after his shower...Half of the book is literally the author discussing the blessing his book is and how important love and respect are (it could be easily shortened to about 50 pages without his self-affirming stories or reviews). Please, instead of this book, read: Love Sense or Created for Connection by Sue Johnson; The 7 Principles for Making Marriage Work by John Gottman; I Hear You by Michael Sorensen...... Anything else. Really.

I am a Christian who believes in biblical gender roles. While the author's ideas sound good on the surface and the colored glasses analogy is helpful, this book ultimately does more harm than good. There is a subtle misogyny in the author's language that weighed on me while reading. His opinions are not congruent with my understanding of my identity in Christ. The author also plays fast and loose with scripture, taking passages out of context and building his own narratives around them, neglecting the whole of biblical witness. This was very damaging to me as a new wife trying to find my footing. I finally felt validated after my father (a long-time conservative Christian) told me he saw this author speak and also thought it was a sham. For wisdom in navigating your marriage, stick to the actual Bible and healthy Christian community.

Great, awesome book. I'm in the mental health field and I appreciate this author's take on relationships and what they consider to be important. Truthfully I'm personally agnostic, but thankfully I was open enough to allow myself to read the book and incorporate those standard wants and desires from the opposite sex into a fitting role model for a true harmonious living. I can see how this information works and would encourage anyone in family counseling to pick up the book and give it a try.

We just celebrated our 30th anniversary. This book and video series was the only thing that genuinely helped us. All our other marriage seminars, books, etc. focused on communication. We were communicating fairly well, just were always butting heads trying to get the other to change/not understanding why we were always butting heads when we loved each other and agreed on so many life issues. This book changed our marriage for the first time, because it helped me understand that my husband is just plain wired differently and MUST feel respect. He would get mad, but I'd have no idea why - because I was looking from a female perspective. Finally, as I changed my interactions with him, he felt respected and calmed down. He had always treated me very well, but after I changed, his feelings for me seemed to go deeper. I could go on but won't. I recommend this book and ministry to everyone I encounter.

Surrender (A MacKinnon's Rangers Novel), by Pamela Clare

From the Author

Dear Readers,I'm so happy Surrender is available once again, both as an ebook and in print. It's been an epic journey with this story, one that almost saw a premature end to the MacKinnon's Rangers series. When I originally wrote it, I had to keep a specific maximum word count in mind. That meant cutting some scenes I loved and shortening others. The result was a book that was a RITA finalist (2007). Still, there were those missing scenes...Eventually, I left the book's original publisher, and both Surrender and the sequel, Untamed, went out of print. I thought that was the end of the series. It was a huge disappointment for me because I love this period of history so very much. Pre-Revolutionary Colonial American history, specifically the period of the French and Indian War or Seven Years War, fascinates me. The mix of cultures, the vastness of the wilderness, the desperate struggle to survive -- these create a vivid backdrop for fiction. I wasn't ready to say goodbye to Iain, Morgan, Connor and the Rangers. Fortunately, Berkley stepped in and bought the entire series, which meant I got a second chance at both Surrender and Untamed. Both have new (historically accurate!) covers. Both have fresh edits. And both have new scenes and extended scenes. So not only is the series back, but it's been restored. I am so happy to share it with you!For those of you who've written to me asking, "Is Connor ever going to get his book?" I can finally answer, "Yes!" Watch for Defiant in July 2012.And thanks for your support! Your devotion to this series helped to keep it alive.Yours,Pamela Clare

I found the story believable with well rounded characters. This is not a book where you can figure out what is going to happen with the exception of the HEA. The flaws the characters have make them more believable and story so much better than if everything that happened was clean and honorable. This takes place during a war and Ms. Clare sets the story in a war and we know wars are not pretty nor are heroes crystal clean. The love is here not just between the main characters but also between the men fighting together. The romance is hot, but it is part of the story and not just thrown in as yet another sex scene ( as so many writers tend to do). I can't believe these books have not been found by more readers or found their way to the movie screen.

4.25 starsI had a lot of trouble deciding how many stars to give this book. I think my biggest problem is that I had certain expectations when I started it, and things didn't unfold as I expected. For some reason, the reviews I read lead me to believe that the hero, Iain, was going to be very tender in his treatment of Annie. Those reviews also made me think this would be an all-out 5 star read for me. Despite my original expectations not being met, I still ended up enjoying this book immensely. Here is a good summary of what i liked and what i didn't like:What I liked:-Iain was a warrior to outdo any and all warriors IMO. That man had the powers of a superhero. He carried Annie on his back for DAYS. He could take on anyone, anywhere. His ability to withstand pain and torment was almost inhuman. He was an amazing leader and deservedly won the loyalty and love of his men, MacKinnon's Rangers. He was gorgeously masculine, brave, noble, honorable.--Annie. I loved her character. She was a fighter and a survivor. She was tender-hearted, kind, devoted, intelligent and sweet. She fought for people she cared about despite the fact that she had no power (as women didn't in Colonial days, whether they lived in england or America).--the non-stop action. There was never a dull moment in this book. It seemed like every 50 pages, either the hero or heroine found themselves in life or death situations. Yeah. It was over the top, but I loved it! :-)--The epilogue. Oh my, did I love this epilogue. There was a scene that was so incredibly touching and powerful, it brought tears to my eyes. Even thinking about it now, 24 hours after finishing this book, my chest constricts. What I didn't like:--Although Iain saved Annie's life multiple times, and although he was extremely protective of her, I felt like he treated her poorly several times...and I didn't like it. He was driven by sexual frustration many times and he seemed a little too prone to anger when it came to Annie. Don't get me wrong though: once certain issues were resolved and after they were marriedhe was a perfect and tender husband and lover.--The setting: War and all the brutality that went with it. This book depressed me in some ways. Men died. Some soldiers behaved in noble ways; others....not. It made me think about how barbaric and disgusting men can be in war. While they paint the other side as evil, they themselves often inflict the same violence and evil on their enemies. Ugh.--Evil men doing evil things and the powerlessness of women, and also men without powerful positions in society The men in power in this book did terrible things to those they had control over. Unfortunately, Annie and Iain, were victims of those men in power. I despised Annie's uncle, William Wentworth and many other crude men that made appearances.--the way Iain's brothers acted when they first saw Annie. Though they came to love Annie, and would risk their lives for her, I had a hard time forgetting what happened in that first scene with them and Annie. This is not a huge spoiler, but just in case......BEGIN SPOILER: Iain, Morgan and Connor are on a mission with the rest of MacKinnon's Rangers, when they see Annie being attacked by the enemy. Men are about to brutally rape her and undoubtedly kill her. Despite the fact that it risks their mission, Iain refused to just stand back and let those men hurt Annie. In contrast, Morgan and Connor felt they should not risk their mission for the life of one woman. I just couldn't wrap my mind around the fact that they could quite literally SEE this woman surrounded -- and KNOW they had the power to easily save her--and turn their backs on her. Even thinking about it now, disgusts me. What does that say about the character of these men? END SPOILERI do think I will read the next book at some point, but I must admit that I can't quite let go of that one scene in the beginning of this book, and the way the brothers behaved. Though Morgan apologized for his behavior (because he now loved Annie), I still wondered....if he came across the same situation (coming upon a woman in jeopardy), would he behave any differently? I sure hope so.

I was looking for something similar to Outlander when I came across this series. While nothing can ever compare to the Outlander series and the Jaime and Claire love story, I found this series, of the MacKinnons Rangers, very well written and the characters well thought out. It is based on 3 Scottish brothers exiled to the Americas in the 1700's. These are great love stories about all 3 brothers, interspersed with steamy romance scenes and vast perils. Kudos to the author for developing the characters so well, in half the pages, as compared to the Outlander series. While this series is not as fulfilling to me as the Outlander series - I had a hard time putting any of these books down and was drawn into these characters lives and the struggles they had trying to forge a life in a new world. The fact they are Highland Scots was a real bonus. It was like a pain pill for my Outlander withdrawals, and while it didnt completely numb the pain, it certainly repressed it for a bit. For anyone trying to find an Outlander alternative - I highly recommend this series.

This book was ok. It kept me entertained enough to finish it but I was not overly impressed. The characters were flat and shallow. The heroine stuttered in fear every other word for the first half of the book while at the same time she was praised for being courageous and spirited. There were too many inconsistencies with the characters to make them believable and I wasn’t able to really get into the book. Not much emotion for this one. If you want a really great series try Outlander by Diana Gabaldon or even the Scotland Trilogy by Marsha Canham. Both were far more enjoyable and had me totally invested in the stories. I won’t be seeking out anything else from Pamela Clare...sorry.
